The River Murray, catchments in the Mount Lofty Rangesand groundwater each pose a range ofwater quality management challenges.Raw water entering one of our water treatmentplants undergoes an extensive multi-stage treatmentprocess. This program allows students to investigatethe science behind water treatment using hands-oninquiry into this fascinating process. Students willidentify the path of source water from the RiverMurray and reservoirs to their tap, solving problemsof water quality in the process. In addition to the Learning Centre experience, a tourof Hope Valley water treatment plant engages studentsso they appreciate and understand the enormousscale of the task to supply drinking water to greatermetropolitan Adelaide (200 gigalitres per annum!).Workshops and tours have been scheduled to allowclass groups to decide on a full day of activities orto select their preference of workshop or tour only.Teacher resources provided.Venue & DatesWorkshopsSA Water Learning Centre,Level 1, 250 Victoria Square, AdelaideTerm 1, Week 9Monday 26 March – Friday 30 MarchWorkshop times:10am – 11.30am12.30pm – 2pmToursHope Valley Water Treatment PlantGrand Junction Rd, Hope ValleyTerm 1, Week 9Monday 26 March – Friday 30 MarchTour times:10am - 11am1pm - 2pmDurationWorkshop and tour: 4 hours(total including travel time between venues)Workshop only: 1.5 hoursTour only: 1 hourCostFree. At our treatmentplants, wastewater undergoes a multi-stage treatmentprocess to clean it before discharge or reuse. In this program students investigate the science ofwastewater treatment and discover new and innovativewastewater recycling schemes that make maximumproductive use of this wastewater includingopportunities for the use of biosolids. The workshop is an engaging hands-on experienceenabling students to answer questions about the scienceof wastewater. Students work in teams to tackle a reallife water challenge by designing a town with a sustainablewater supply. The challenge submerges studentsin studies of geography and sustainability while exploringthe options for water supply that will meet growingdemands. It touches on future planning, populationsand demographics while also teaching students aboutthe water cycle and the different treatment processesrequired for different sources of water. The best design will be chosen by the group using ourelectronic handsets. This program will allow studentsto use their knowledge and collaboration skills to workin teams to do what SA Water does every day – deliverquality water to its customers.
