Dr. Jim Wilson, Assistant Vice Presidentfor Academic Affairs, won a weekendtrip based upon the Super Ticket drawing.The group enjoyed a box lunch donated byPureBread Deli and then joined the “runningof the carts” as the golfers headed outon the course for the noon shotgun start.Members of the Recruiting Department,led by Rob Miller, staffed two beveragestations and drove a snack cart around thecourse. Larry Barth, local Culinart managerat the <strong>University</strong>, grilled hotdogs and kielbasaas the players passed the ninth hole. By 5:30p.m., the golfers were headed toward theclubhouse for the happy hour that precededthe awards banquet.The banquet was officially opened byDr. Jack Varsalona, <strong>University</strong> president,who welcomed the golfers saying,“Every penny that is raised today will goright back to our students in the form ofscholarships and other benefits.”Dr. Thomas Cupples, AssistantVice President for Institutional Advancement,introduced two student scholarshiprecipients who thanked the golfers forsupporting the event and added personalinsights about how the scholarships hadhelped them.Plenty of lighthearted golf banter washeard during the banquet, which was highlightedwith several door prizes presentedby Gloria Johnson, Director of theAnnual Fund.Although the mood of the day waslighthearted, the atmosphere became abit more serious when the winners of thegolf competition were announced. DinoNardo and Kari Jarmuz received a trophyfor the longest drive, while Jim Byrnereceived the closest to the pin award. Firstplace was decided by a tiebreaker, as twoteams finished with identical scores of 58.But it was the foursome of Chris Aiello,Anthony Burton, Shawn Mitchell,and Bill Riley who received the firstplacetrophies and bragging rights untilnext year’s outing.In addition to those mentionedabove, special recognition was given toDr. Michael Axe and Dr. Joseph Straight,<strong>Wilmington</strong> Trust, Scalessa Lawncare,Comcast Spotlight and Giordano CustomHomes as major sponsors.
