Not only is it a long one, dating backto 1920, but it has been extremely competitiveand especially so in recent years. Two of the lastthree games have been decided in overtime, and in the last eight years, both teams have wonfour times. Going back even further, to 1978, theteams are 16-16 in 32 games, and 14 of thosegames have been decided by a touchdown orless. The Pioneers prevailed last year in twoovertimes and have won the last two games. While the Thanksgiving game is always a makeor-breakevent for the season, both schoolshave had down seasons in 2010 and a win on theholiday would go a long way to making the wintera little warmer. The Indians are 2-8 and have losttheir last six. Bartlett has struggled on defense allseason, allowing 343 points. Southbridge haslost five in a row after a 3-2 start and stands at3-7. The Pioneers have lost their last two gamesby combined scores of 74-0. Bartlett’s RoccoDiStefano, just a junior, has had a great seasonrunning the football and ranks among the toprushers in Central Mass. with 1,119 yards.Indians (2-8)Coach: Dane Labossonniere10 Javon Winston WR/DB So.11 David Brooks QB/DB Jr.12 Ricky Spooner QB Fr.16 Kelly Chisholm WR/DB So.20 Eligah Thomas RB/DB Fr.21 Harry Le RB/DB 8th22 Trevor Burns OL/DL 9th23 Rocco DiStefano RB/DB Jr.24 Conor McCarthy OL/DL Jr.25 Joe Gifford WR/DB Jr.31 Kenny Mardirosian RB/DB Sr.32 Jonathan Martin RB/DB Sr.34 Randy LeBeau DL Sr.35 D.J. But both havebeen through a pressure cooker of a regular season, and so the second season in itself is played at DoyleField, with the postseason following. After his272-yard, six-touchdown performance againstGardner, Red Raiders junior Quinton Perkins is 15rushing yards away from 1,000 for the season. Theleading scorer in Central Mass. has 27 touchdowns(19 rushing), has booted seven extra points, andscored six 2-point conversions while averaging about20 yards a catch and remaining a pickoff threat in thesecondary. Also producing out of the backfield aresenior back Steph’fon Teague and senior QBAnthony Figueroa. Blue Devils junior fullback CortezLudden can pound away the tough yards in theclutch, as evidenced by his TD and conversion runs inovertime to beat Doherty in Week 2, and look for himto make big plays from his linebacker spot. The Patriots won six consecutive holidaybattles from 2001 through 2006 while Doherty has wonthe last three in a row. Both teams will finish with recordsunder .500 no matter who wins, and both teams come intothe game with a victory in their previous game. For Burncoat,it was a 28-3 triumph over South that snapped a nasty littlefour-game losing streak. For the Highlanders, it was a 21-8victory over Shepherd Hill. While both teams are coming offvictories, Doherty definitely heads into the game as the hotterteam. The Highlanders stumbled at the beginning of theseason, getting off to an 0-5 start, then turned it around andwon four of their next five. Doherty quarterback Tim Busheyhas passed for more than 1,000 yards, connecting on 64 of115 attempts. He has thrown for 10 touchdowns. His favoritetarget has been senior Andre Santana, who has 32 catchesfor 469 yards. Santana is also the Highlanders’ top tacklerwith 86 out of the defensive backfield. They have the best wide receiver (California-boundRichard Rodgers), one of the bestquarterbacks (Dan Light), and a running back(John Vassar) who would be the go-to guy on anyother team. St. John’s is big, fast and deep atevery position. So how can the Guardians endtheir seven-year Thanksgiving losing streak? Aperfect game and lots of luck, perhaps. St.Peter-Marian has won three straight, so don’texpect St. John’s to take the Guardians lightly.SPM has a solid running game with Tre Watson(298 yards), Division 1C All-Star Gavin O’Neal(283) and Dan Henrickson (268). The Guardianscan also throw the ball with O’Neil (382receiving yards) the favorite target of Steve Flynn(645 passing yards). SPM is hoping to stop St.John’s with defensive all-stars Jordan Knowles(10 sacks), Watson and Lamar Edmonds. Light’snumbers (1,670 yards, 23 TDs passing; 766yards, 13 TDs rushing) are eye-popping andearned him Division 1A Offensive MVP honors.Rodgers, the Division 1A MVP, has caught 44passes for 808 yards and 12 TDs, while ChrisDulmaine has 16 catches for 312 yards and sixTDs. It’s an often-fatal injury in which blood poolinginside the skull puts pressure on the brain.Holland took a knee to the head as he tried to tackle an Oxfordball-carrier. He remained on the field for two more plays beforewoozily make his way to the sideline.“I don’t remember the hit,” he said last week as his teammatesran though their drills a few yards away. “I remember looking uponce or twice when I was on the field, the lights on top of theambulance I remember seeing, then the next thing I knew I wasin the ICU.”Taylor Specker, Holland’s girlfriend and the Panthers’ placekicker, was terrified. He had given her specific instructions not to come over if thegot hurt, but to stay focused and be ready if the team needed her.“It was the hardest thing to watch and it was the worst day ofmy life,” the senior said. “I was crying. I had to watch him goaway and I couldn’t go with him. It was the hardest thing for me.”Goodnow returned to practice last week and is expected to playagainst West Boylston tomorrow. Holland is back with the team, too, but his days playing his favorite sport are over.

WWW.TELEGRAM.COM/HOMETEAM CENTRAL MASS. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS MAGAZINE PAGE19Cover story...His role is now to provide leadershipand inspiration, helping histeammates in practice and gamesand assisting the coaches in breakingdown film and generating stats.Co-captains Joe Chick and CurtisButkiewicz say Holland’s presencehas boosted morale on a squad thatwas shaken by his injury.Second-year Quabbin coach TabBassett appreciates the help Hollandhas provided and believes he wouldmake a good coach someday. Mostly,he is relieved that the junior is backand getting stronger every day.“I feel very lucky that he is herewith us seeing what happened (lastweek), knowing how close he was tothe fate of (Sutton’s Michael Ellsessar, who died during a JV game),”Bassett said. “You get the realitycheck and then you are really gratefulfor what you have. He knows hewon’t play football again, but he hashis life, and he appreciates that.”Holland spent Friday and Saturdaynight at UMass and was dischargedon Sunday. He was admittedagain the next day when he beganvomiting after waking up and stayedtwo more days in the hospital. He couldn’t do much much whenhe returned home to Ware exceptwait to get better.“Watching TV made my head hurt, reading made my head hurt,” saidHolland who turned 17 last week. “Iwatched the ceiling a lot. I listenedthe Drew Brees book ‘Coming BackStronger,’ which was eerily close tohow I was feeling. He talked aboutwhat he did to get back (from leg andshoulder injuries) and what he usedto motivate himself. I know I cannever play, but as soon as I can lift ...I want people when they see me tothink I do play. I want to look like Idid when I did play. I want to still beconsidered an athlete even though Ican’t play.”Holland missed two weeks ofschool and when he did return, going half days at first, he had dropped20 pounds, down to 150.“The two weeks he wasn’t here, everyone was thinking about him,”Bassett said. “(The players) saw him10 days after the injury and Nickcouldn’t even walk across the gym.As weird as it sounds, that wasalmost twice dealing with it. So, anytime he can be part of the team —and he was a major part of the team— it helps their morale.”Holland played wide receiver andlinebacker as well as special teams. He hardly ever came off the field. Hescored Quabbin’s only touchdown ina season-opening loss to Leicester, then contributed a one-handed catchand a 65-yard kick return againstOxford the night he got hurt.“I felt I ended, not on my terms, but at least the way I wanted to beremembered on the field,” he said.Holland had played football for aslong he could remember. He wasquarterback for his high school inLondonderry, N.H., before moving toMassachusetts with his mother andQuabbin Regional football player Nick Holland does a safety check on a teammate’s helmet before a recent practice.her boyfriend two years ago.He also played hockey andlacrosse in New Hampshire andbasketball at Quabbin. Football, though, was always No. 1. He washoping to play in college and willingto stick with the game as far as itwould take him.“Compared to other sports, there’sno other feeling of brotherhood,”Holland said. “I don’t get the samefeeling when I step on the ice inhockey or on the court in basketball. When you step on the field under thelights on Friday, once a week, sametime, everyone knows what time andwhere it is, it’s just different. I’venever felt the way about teammatesin football in any other sport.”The headaches have gone awayand he said he feels fine now. Still, doctors told him that he can’t playany sports for a year and stronglyrecommended that he give up contactsports. It has been difficult, of course. Hehas seen his team struggle through a1-9 season, knowing he might’vebeen able to make a difference if hewere healthy.Instead, the game that has been somuch a part of his life is gone.“(Football) was my passion,” hesaid. “It was my favorite sport.CHRISTINE PETERSONThat’s one of the things that bothersme. I can be part of it, but I’ll neverstrap them on again. The closest Ican get to the field is the white line.”Thanksgiving morning won’t bethe same, but he seems to have cometo grips with no longer being able toplay. Maybe he can help the Panthersin another way against WestBoylston. Perhaps the skills he ispicking up now will give him a headstart if he decides to coach.“I don’t think it happened justbecause,” he said. “There’s got to bea reason I’m supposed to coach. Ithink that’s what I’m supposed todo.”

While Shrewsbury was ableto shut out Div. 1B rival Gardner, 20-0, the Wildcats handled Milfordby a score of 28-10. The Colonials find themselves in a familiarposition: For the third year in a row, Shrewsbury needs to beatMilford to qualify for the postseason. The Scarlet Hawks face theunenviable task of trying to stop Shrewsbury senior Alex Paulina, who has rushed for the fifth-most yards in Central Mass. He hasgained 1,286 on 173 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. Whenthey pass, the Colonials generally look for senior Sean Dixon, wholeads the team in receptions with 28, good for 406 yards. Shrewburyalso has the region’s top tackler in junior linebacker KristianJackson, who has recorded 117 and was named to the Division 1AAll-Star team. The Colonials will need to contain Milford’s TylerAsam, Chris Casey and Jarod Casey. The Scarlet Hawks also boastone of the top kickers in the area in Maycon Nalon. Milford will lookto Kyle Morgan to lead the defensive line. Since the teams beganplaying on Thanksgiving in 1976, Milford has built up a pretty sizableedge in the series, winning 20 of 34 games. Startingwith a season-opening 34-21 loss to WorcesterTech, South has had several heartbreakers, scoring in every game this season, with atleast two touchdowns in all but two games.Junior Frank Ansah has averaged about 8 yardsa carry, and the Colonels have a dynamitereceiver in senior Hugh Daye (11 touchdowns).Classmate Dave Green has run the offense efficientlysince moving over from end. For North, look out for junior Irving Reyes (964 yards rushing),who is always a threat to score out of thebackfield, and — as a defensive back — can alsoget into an opposing quarterback’s head, havingreturned an interception 80 yards for a score thisseason. Winor lose, both teams will qualify for the Division 2playoffs, but don’t expect either to treat this gameas a postseason tuneup. Millbury, which has dominatedthis series, is led by senior running backBrandon Richard, whose 1,560 yards on 226carries rank third in Central Mass. His 16 touchdownsare also among the CMass leaders. But bothhave been through a pressure cooker of a regularseason, and so the second season in itself isplayed at Doyle Field, with the postseason following. After his 272-yard, six-touchdown performanceagainst Gardner, Red Raiders junior QuintonPerkins is 15 rushing yards away from 1,000 forthe season. The leading scorer in Central Mass.has 27 touchdowns (19 rushing), has bootedseven extra points, and scored six 2-point conversionswhile averaging about 20 yards a catchand remaining a pickoff threat in the secondary. Also producing out of the backfield are seniorback Steph’fon Teague and senior QB AnthonyFigueroa. Blue Devils junior fullback Cortez Luddencan pound away the tough yards in the clutch,as evidenced by his TD and conversion runs inovertime to beat Doherty in Week 2, and look forhim to make big plays from his linebacker spot.Junior Geraldo Rivera and senior Nick Wilfordhave also been productive backs for coach JohnDubzinski.Coach: Tom Bingham1 Zachary Roth K Sr.2 Brett Franciosi 62 Michael TB / S Ghilardi Sr. T / DE Jr.3 Jeremy Quill 64 Stefan FB / LB Quattrucci Sr. T / DE So.5 Jake DiBattista 65 Eric QB Newcomb / C Sr. G / DE So.6 Andrew Bouchard 69 Adam SE / C Cloutier Fr.
