The CASCARS are coming!
THE GOOD ol' boys
are making their way
back to the Gold Pan
City.
The Canadian Association
for Stock Car
Auto Racing, after a twoweek
layoff, will be in
Quesnel this weekend to
run the sixth CASCAR
Super Series West race of
the year.
CASCAR, for those
who know nothing about
the sport, is a junior version
of NASCAR racing
in the U.S.
Drivers to watch for
are Prince George's Steve
Jefferson, #5, who leads
the CASCAR West Series
Harold Browne, seen here spinning out in Prince George at the iron Horse 150, will be
one off several CASCAR racers who will be making their way to Quesnei this weelcend.
Sales ready and rarin'
THINGS JUST don't go
right some times, no matter
how hard a person tries.
In the fifth CASCAR Super
Series West race of the year, the
Castrol-Bumper to Bumper 100
in Regina, Saskatchewan, Don
Sales, despite trying his hardest
yet again, literally ran into
more bad luck.
On lap 31, Sales' Skoal Inc.
Chevrolet experienced mechanical
failure and was forced to
retire early. A piston broke in
the bottom half of Sale's 350
cubic inch, 375 horse power
motor.
Taking the checkered flag
in the capital city was Kevin
Dowler of Sherwood Park, Ab.
The Ford Quality Care/
Mohawk sponsored-racer, who
led from lap 22 on, staved off a
hard charge from Calgary's
Harold Browne for the win.
At one point. Sales and his
green, 1994 Chevy Lumina
were fourth. However, he had
to pit after being rear-ended
which put him at the
back of the pack. After winding
i - 1. ^
not give the Billy
Barker llqysTfteftMon a g»?
his way through half of the
field, his piston snapped.
It wasn't the first time Sales
has experienced mechanical
problems.
In Hythe, Ab., the race
before Regina, Sales had
another piston snap in the bottom
half of his engine.
Motor problems are only
two in a string of mishaps that
have put a slight damper on
Sales'season.
To date, Number 33 has
not finished any of the year's
previous four races. In the yearopener
at Prince George, Sales
crashed on lap 101 of 150.
"Things haven't changed
much since Prince," stated
Sales, who hopes his luck soon
changes. "If it isn't a crash,
then it's mechanical."
But in all of them, the
Skoal Inc. driver had shown
promise, as he consistently
wound up in top 10 starting
positions.
For example, the Quesnel
resident was fourth in heat
racing and seventh in timing.
with 818 points, and
Sherwood Park's Kevin
Dowler, #35, who is second
with 798. Saskatoon's
Dan Shirley, #46,
third with 786, is yet
another key figure on the
track to keep an eye
peeled on.
Quesnel's Don Sales
and Ron Larson are 15 th
and 16th in point standings
respectively.
Time trials at^ the
Goldpan Motor Speedway
start at 4:00. An
autograph session, starting
at 5:00, precedes the
racing which starts at
6:00 p.m.
Larson looks forward
"Our car is quick. We
know that. It's just that we've
been having a lot of minor troubles
this year for some reason."
Ron Larson has just summed
up his 1996 CASCAR
Super Series West season so far.
Out of the four events the
Quesnel resident has experienced
problems in every race.
So far, he's finished 12th, 20th,
17th and ninth.
"If it ain't tires, it's parts
breaking. And if it ain't parts,
we're crashing," stated Number
12.
In Calgary, the second race
of the year, a module quit in his
white, 1994 Chevrolet Lumina,
which forced the Richmond
Engines/ Brigdon Manufacturing
sponsored driver to exit
early. Then in Saskatoon, an oil
spill caused a multi-car crash,
which he was part of.
In Hythe, Ab., a tire change
cost him a possible victory.
"We were leading the race
when he had a stop and go on
lap 75 to check out the tires."
The Grande Prairie track is
almost like sandpaper and eats
up hard tires at a voracious
rate.
And because of that, officials
allowed racers to change
tires from a harder compound,
87s, to a softer compound, 86s.
"We led until lap 90, where
we were forced to pit in and
change tires. We had to put on
an old set of 86s just to keep up
to the guys who put on 86s,"
remarked Larson.
The 86 compound tire is
four-tenths of a second quicker
than the 87s. Several laps at 80
miles per hour can create a
huge difference. One Larson is
well aware of.
After the race, "where he
finished ninth - seven laps
behind the Winner, Larson was
so mad about the tire change,
he boycotted the next race in
Regina.
Larson, however, has let
bygones be bygones and is just
focusing on this weekend.
"We're hoping to do really
well on our home track."
out, are aptly named.
The Elites proved
they were the elite team
at the Quesnel Ladies
Fastball League yearend
tournament, as they
captured first-place.
Westforest, who
went undefeated in their
three games at the twoday
tourney, beat the
Inland Claim Diggers
11-8 in the championship
match Sunday
afternoon.
The Elites started
off on the right foot, as
they defeated Snaking
River Saturday afternoon.
The Diggers, 3-2
over the weekend, had a
rough road to the finals.
After winning their
first two games, Inland
Claim lost in the championship
bye match
when they lost 10-8 to
the Elites.
The Diggers then
had to play Cam's
Chimney Service, whom
they downed 9-1, in the
semi-final match.
They then were
defeated, narrowly
again, by the Elites in
the championship
match. Three games,
played back to back to
back, in 30 degree Celsius
weather.
Before the playoffs,
the Diggers beat the
Blues and Vipers on
Saturday.
Placing fourth were
the Eldorado/Sports
Traders Vipers, 1-2,
while Snaking River, 1-
2, took fifth. Blue Chip
Kaos, 0-2, wound up
sixth at the six-team
event.
Elites
win
season
title
IT WAS a close race,
but in the end, the Westforest
Elites proved victorious.
Westforest edged out
the Eldorado/Sports Traders
Vipers by three
points to capture the
1996 Quesnel Ladies
Fastball regular season
title.
The Elites racked up
10 wins and two losses,
good for 20 points, while
the Vipers, 8-3-1, had 17.
Mr. Mike's, 6-4-1,
placed third, narrowly
squeezing past the 6-6
Cam's Chimney Service
Blues.
The Blues had a
chance to pass Mr. Mike's
in the standings, but
failed to do so when they
lost their final two games.
Snaking River, 4-7,
wound up fifth with eight
points with the Inland
Claim Diggers, 2-9, in
sixth with four. Blue Chip
Kaos, 1-8, were seventh.
League spokesperson
Linda Adams said the
past year was an exciting
year for ball. She hopes a
lot of people will come
out this weekend and
cheer on the home teams
at the QLF Billy Baker
