THERE ARE 194 million acres
of faiTn land in the six cx)untries
that comprise tiie European Economic
Communiity—only about 11
per cent more than Canada's 174
million acres.
But, reports the Economics Division
of the Canada Department
of Agriculture, there are over 17
times as many farms—9.6 million
compared to 575,000.
The average ifarm in -the European
countries contains 20 acres
and two-thirds ihave less than 12
acres, while in Canada the average
farm is 315 acres.
The six memiber countries of
EEC also known as the European
Common Market, are France,
West Germany, Italy, Belgium,
The Nethei'^ands and Luxembourg.
TRACTOR USE
In Canada, 87 iper cent of faiTns
have tractors, compared with 15
per cent in the EEC countries.
More than 26 per cent of the labor
force in the European countries is
occupied in agriculture, while in
this country, farm labor amounts
to only about 12 per cent.
With many .small farms, production
is intensive in the com
about 44 million cattle, of which
19 million are milk cattle. Canada
has 11 million cattle, with three
million of these being milk cattle.
European farms can carry about
31 livestock units per 100 acres,
Though the common markel
countries have traditionally been
1953-57 they produced an average
of 820 million bushels a year compared
with about 472 million bushels
in Canada. Average yields
were 32 bushels and 20 bushels
per acre respectively.
Meat and milk piioduction is also
high. In 1953-37, an annual average
of aibout 16 billion pounds of
meat was produced in the European
countries and 2.S biMion in
Canada. Output of milk was about
124 billion .pounds, compared wilh
SOME OF THE pet parade winners
longer. Father is the photographer - with mother and baby
brother well back behind him. For this is a highlight of a
"camping out" holiday, so carefully planned that expenditures
didn't exceed the .sum of money set aside for it.
The budget of the Minister of Norlhern Affairs and National
Resources at Ottawa covers a number of departmental
branches. Among these are National Parks, Water Resources,
Forestry, and Northern Administration and Lands.
His expenditures involve millions of dollars.
Money for all departments of government comes through
the Minister of Finance who gels il hirgcly in taxes from
Canadians such as you. When more money is spent lhan is
collected in taxes, govcrnmenl musl borrow from you . . .
or else create new nioney. The creation of new money is
one factor that leads lo inlUilion . . . which means your
dollar buys less and less.
The government has been spending more than you have
been paying in taxes. To narrow the gap between income
and expenditures, new taxes have been imposed.
The next step should be lo reduce expenditures, or at
least hold the line. Undertaking new commiimenls — adding
new welfare or other services — will only make it thai much
more difficult to pay our way. Tell your M.P. al Oitawa ihat
since you are trying to save, you expect i^ovemnient to do
tbe same.
You also help when you save more by means of life insurance,
savings deposits, and ihe purchase of government
bonds. Your savings help to create a SOUND dollar; and
this, in turn, helps to create job security for you and more
jobs for other Canadians.
BECAUSE OF thc possible contamination
of food supphes from
radio-active fallout, the department
of agriculture has instituted
research on the movement of radioactive
contaminants, and of
prevention of their entrance inlo
the food chain.
Radioactive contaminants fall
into the soil and enter the herbage
thereby contaminating not only
plant life products but also the
products from animals feeding on
contaminated herbage.
POSSIBLE CONTROL?
Dr. B. B. Mi'gico\'sky, liead biochemistiy
and nutrition section.
Animal Research Institute, says
the detailed knowledge of the
movements of these contaminants
may lead us lo a means of contro].
Research to date has resulted
in a process of treating milk by
which the radioactive isotopes of
stTOHtium and cesium can be removed
from milk.
This method utilizes the principle
of iron exchange. The substance,
similar lo water softener,
specifically a cation exchange
resin, is treated with salts of calcium,
^potassium and .sodium. The
milk is treated with the specially
prepared resin. The strontium and
cesium comes out on the resin and
the milk remains unchanged with
respect to flavor and composition.
This method provides a practical
means of decontaminating
miik al relatively low cost.
list, and wish her a speedy recovery.
Also Mr. Fransein, WIIQ is in
Baker Memorial Hospital suffering
from an injured back he received
while at work recently.
:•; :•:
Sheila May and ^Louie Scholefield
returned hom'e last week.
They were accompanied by E.
Samson who was en route to Vanderhoof.
Two cars got into difficulty recently
wliile travelling on the
Marsh Road. One was tipped on
its side and required a wrecker
to right it. Tho other was nol so
lucky as it later hit the .same .spot
and turned over. We undestand it
was damaged beyond repair. Fortunately
no one was injured. It is
evident that this road is too "arrow
for the volume of trafSic it is
now called on to carry.
Congratulations to Duke Scholefield
on being the lucky winner of
the Elks bingo jackpot recently.
GREEN CHOSEN FOR WALLS CARIBOO OBSER\^R - Thursday, Sept. 17, 1959 - Page 5
White walls may be fashionable,
but women who want a background
color that i.s always adaptable
should choose green.
This is the opinion of a famous
interior designer who has been
advising women for more than 20
years. He thinks this color goes
well with rich aquas, deep skv^
blues and bright scarlets. "Soft
green is the color nature uses to
show off brilliant flowers."
can really take a bow this week,
for this district had individual winners
in every division in the Fair
book, besides our district display
receiving third prize this year
and our school first.
The 4-H Community Club won
prizes and practically stole the
show with their Iambs. We don't
know when such hearty laughter
was heard in the arena before,
which leaves no doubt that the
BARKERVILLE — There has
beea a total of 9,&45 visitors registered
. at the Barkerville Historic
Maseun as of September 14.
Since June 27, when the register
book was first opened, an average
of anJTOximately 110 people per
(Jay stowed their interest in the
otd naning town by travelling off
the beaten track, in some cases
hiDtdreds of miles, to see what is
going oo at Barkerville. Many of
the visitors voiced their enthusiasm
in appreciative remarks, and
added that they hoped to return
to see more buildings restored
next year.
Weather in this district this past
sunimer has been singularly
dreadful, with constant rain, except
a short while in July, heavy
hail storms and generally cold with
frequent frosts. The many travellers
and campers did not seem to
mind tho cold and miserable conditions
but rather looked quite
happy and cheerful about it aJl,
which shows a modern hardihood
quite equal to the early mining
days of 1862 when the cold wind
blew down Williams Creek. "Hus
is a credit to the px-esent day tourjst,
but it is hoped that there will
be better weather in the ne.xt year.
IVfUSEUM ADDITION
A valuable addition to the Barkerville
Museum collection was obtained
recently from the McArtJiui^
family, old time residents of BarkervUle.
Among the many items
are a set of ledgers and minute
books of the Forest Rose Mining
Company dating back to 1867. One
page of the company's minute
book concerns a meeting held in
Camerontown,' and on tliis page
are the signatures of the members
attending. One interesting signature
is tlrat of John Cameron, the
famous "Carilwo" Cameron. The
restored blacksmith slwp in Barkerville
Historic Park is located on
the site of the former blacksmith
shop of Sandy McAi'thur, who was
a member of the above McArthur
family.
Mrs. Nettie McArthur celebrated
her 80th birthday last Saturday,
September 5. Beautiful flowers and
gifts were presented lo Mr.s. Mc
Arthur, who was born here, and
never wishes to live anywhere
else. A governmerit record book
of 1887 that included all thc honoi^
students of that year has Mrs.
McArthur's name as receiving a
certificate for proficiency. Mrs.
McArthur was then Miss Jeanette
House.
* S H;
Interesting visitors last week
were Mr. and Mrs. Alex Wallace.
Mrs. Wallace's father was Fred
HAIR-RAISING EXPERIENCE
Rose who came to Barkerville in
1862 and was later police constable
at 150-Mile House. Rose
Lake was named in honor of Mr.
Rose.
• * *
Marauding bears have been invading
BarkerviUe tliis past few
weeks. There aa-e no berries at all
this year and the bears are hungrily
raiding garbage cans and
and food stored in wood sheds.
Mr. Giddings, who lives at the
south end of town, and Mr. Demski,
have both reported sides of
bacon stolen by bears.
Art Pedor.son and son of Wells
have a .sluice box mining venture
half way between Richfield and
Barker\iUe and wall allow visitors
to pan for a fee on their property.
This is a novel idea in the gold
producing hne. Mr. Pederson has
donated a number of relics to the
museum this past month, some of
which he found on his diggings.
* -s *
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Harrison
of Vancouver were in Bai'kerville
i-ecently. Mr. Harrison, a specialist
in museum design and administration,
has drawn tentative
plans for the Barkendlle Historic
Park's now fireproof museum. As
a member of the Vancouver Museum
Board, Mr. Harrison was
