The opportunities for Canadians to make thesedecisions are many. Choosing whether or notto buy bioproducts is among the most powerfulways to express your opinion. Regulations andincentives aside, the success or failure ofbioproducts may ultimately be decided byconsumers at store shelves and gasolinepumps.To learn more about bioproducts, consumerscan watch for labels on the household productsthey buy. In some cases, labels help todistinguish between bioproducts and theresources and technologies — such as geneticengineering — they rely on. They may alsoindicate certain “eco-standards” of being“green,” “sustainable” or “environmentallyfriendly.” At the present time, labelling ofproducts containing genetically modifiedorganisms is not required in Canada (althoughstandards are being developed for thevoluntary labelling of foods derived frombiotechnology).Readers are also encouraged to access otherresources — government and non-governmentorganizations, researchers and educators,industry associations and representatives — toget information that explains the science andtechnology, the environmental and socialimpacts, the costs, and the ethicalconsiderations related to bioproducts.Pollution Probe is dedicated to ensuring thatgovernments and industry implement policiesand programmes that lead to a cleaner andsafer environment. The support of an informedand active public is essential to this mission.BIOCAP Canada is committed to providing theresearch insights and technologies to informpolicy and investment decisions to support thesustainable use of biological systems to addressclimate change.
