Thousands of elk summer inthe Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, thelargest essentially intact natural area inthe contiguous United States. In thewinter, anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000elk gather at the refuge. Home to thelargest elk herd in the world, the areaalso supports a large herd of bison, aswell as deer, moose, bighorn sheep,pronghorn and coyote, plus many smallmammals and a variety of birds.Although you can often see elk fromthe highway, your best bet for seeingthem up close is to sign up for a sleighride. On a minus-17-degree morning webundled up and joined some others for aride; we all smiled when we were handedwarm blankets to drape over ourlaps. Two draft horses pulled the sleighout on the refuge.
