African Union–UN peacekeeping missiondonates supplies to women’s prisonand trains Corrections OfficersThe joint African Union-<strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> peacekeepingmission in Darfur (UNAMID) donated supplies toa women’s prison in <strong>the</strong> western Sudanese region inAugust 2009.Following a request made in July for support by <strong>the</strong>detention centre in Khanaga, <strong>the</strong> operation contributeditems, including cooking utensils and bedding. The donationto <strong>the</strong> prison in North Darfur state is a manifestationof UNAMID’s on-going commitment to bolsteringnational institutions to allow <strong>the</strong>m to better respond topeople’s needs.Earlier in August 2009, staff from UNAMID’s humanrights and rule of law sections completed a four-daytraining course on human rights standards and prisonmanagement for 30 corrections officials working inNorth Darfur.The training, <strong>the</strong> first of its kind in North Darfur, includedsuch topics as <strong>the</strong> humane treatment of prisoners, particularlyminors, pre-trial detainees and female prisoners.The course, held in El Fasher, was funded by Switzerlandthrough <strong>the</strong> UN Office of <strong>the</strong> High Commissionerfor Human Rights (OHCHR).Official Opening of “Human Rights and PrisonManagement” course for Prison Staff in North Darfur state.Photo: UNAMID / Olivier Chassot12DPKO | CORRECTIONS UPDATE | OCTOBER 2009
