What is Water Hammer?valve closed; water stillvalve open; water movingvalve closes; WATER HAMMER!Although water hammer is a subjectusually left up to plumbing engineers, the effects of water hammer must bedealt with every day by plumbing contractorseverywhere. Water hammeris easily recognized by the bangingor thumping noise that’s heard whenvalves are shut off. Although this isan easy way to recognize the problem, water hammer doesn’t always makethese telltale noises. Water hammeroccurs when the flow of moving wateris suddenly stopped by a closingvalve. This sudden stop results in a tremendousspike of pressure behind thevalve which acts like a tiny explosionWhy Air Chambers Don’t Workinside the pipe. This pressure spikereverberates throughout the plumbingsystem, rattling and shaking pipes, until it is absorbed. Normally, a sufficientpocket of air will absorbsuch a pressure spike, but if no pocket of airis present, expensivefixtures and applianceswithin theplumbing systemwill be damaged asthey are leftto absorbthis pressurespike. It used to be thought that an air chamber,or capped stand pipe, was an effectivesolution to controlling water hammer. However, within an air chamber, nothing separates the air from the water. It only takes a few short weeks beforethe air is absorbed into the water, leaving the air chamber waterloggedand completely ineffective. Laboratorytests confirm that the air is depletedby simple air permeation and by interactionbetween static pressure andflow pressure. In the diagram shown,(right) notice the difference in waterlevel between “Static Line Pressure”and “Post-Cycle Static Level.”Static LinePressureFlow(air is depleted)Shock/Turbulence(air is depleted)Post-Cycle StaticLevelControlling Water HammerPistonmoves andcompressesair cushionPressure spikegenerated by valveclosureQuick closingvalvePermanent,pressurizedair-cushionPiston at restWater flows throughsystemThe most effective means of controllingwater hammer is a measured, compressible cushion of air which ispermanently separated from the watersystem. Sioux Chief arresters employa pressurized cushion of air and atwo o-ring piston, which permanentlyseparates this air cushion from the watersystem. When the valve closes andthe water flow is suddenly stopped, thepressure spike pushes the piston upthe arrester chamber against the pressurizedcushion of air. The air cushionin the arrester reacts instantly, absorbingthe pressure spike that causeswater hammer. Although arresters aretypically tested to 10,000 cycles, SiouxChief arresters have been independentlylab tested to withstand 500,000cycles without failure. All Sioux Chiefarresters are guaranteed to controlwater hammer for the lifetime of theplumbing system. For more information about controllingwater hammer see our EngineerReport or our Water Hammer FAQ brochure.Call or visit our website to requesta copy.
