Karameikos - Vaults of Pandius

The Demography of Karameikosaround the medium course of HillfollowRiver, and in the northernmost woods of theVorloi and Dmitrov peninsula. This level ofsettlement is found in a tiny strip all aroundKarameikos’ coasts, from Rugalov to thebeginning of the Dmitrov and Vorloipeninsula, and from the border of the Estateof Marilenev westward, toward Sulescu,Vandevicisny, and the Black Eagle Barony.Lands between Luln, Radlebb Keep, and FortDoom belong to this level of settlement, as dothe vicinity of Riverfork Keep, the farmlandssouth of Threshold, the right bank of theWindrush River from Kelvin to Verge, and theleft banks of the Hillfollow River from theborders of the Estate of Penhaligon up toStallanford. A number of activities are foundin those areas, from agriculture, fishing, andlogging to herding, boating, trapping,hunting, and a little mining.Borderlands, which constitute the vastmajority - in terms of surface areas – of thelands where humanity is spread, are actuallyalmost uninhabited (1.3-9 people per squaremile). Tiny villages, hamlets, and huts areseparated by miles, with distances becominglonger in areas further away from the settledlands. Most of the woodlands of southernKarameikos are borderlands: the woodssouth and north of the Westron Road, thosebetween the Highreach River and the DymrakForest, and the woods immediately north ofthe Eastron Road. Borderlands include alsothe border areas of the Black Eagle Barony,the southern Cruth Lowlands around thelocal rivers, the plains south of Verge, valesaround Threshold and the lands east of thetown, up to the Hillfollow River. The easternhalf of the Barony of Kelvin, consisting ofmoors and forests, belongs to theborderlands as well, as do the outlying areasof the Estate of Penhaligon and the banks ofthe Hillfollow River past Stallanford, of theHighreach and Castellan rivers. Very fewpeople (less than 10%) live in theborderlands, which are dotted withindependent settlements and outposts aswell as with keeps of nobles – old Traladaranclans or people entitled by the Grand Duketo control far away areas. In theborderlands, agriculture is supplemented byherding, trapping, hunting, logging,boating, fishing, and mining.
