EditorialWelcome to Threshold: The Mystara MagazineAs the editor of this first issue of Threshold, itis my pleasure to welcome you, dear reader,to the new magazine for the world of Mystara.Whether you came to Mystara through theExpert Set, the Gazetteers, or the AD&D 2eboxed sets, chances are the Grand Duchy ofKarameikos was your gateway to the KnownWorld and beyond -- thus, what better startfor a new magazine than Karameikos? A landof adventure, with dangerous borderlandsteeming with hostile goblinoids, giants, anddragons but also magical realms, treasuresand relics of distant ages, as well as towns andcities posing their own challenges, the GrandDuchy of Karameikos is, after more than 30years from its original appearance, still thestarting point for many adventurers. As such,you will find that this issue contains a mix ofnew articles and revised “gems” from theVaults of Pandius, such as the Return to theIce Wall.We wish especially to underline that the issueof what is “canon” is not relevant and will notbe touched upon by Threshold. Rather,Threshold supports diversity, as shown by thetwo very different takes on the history ofKarameikos presented in this issue: whereasThe Hidden Years presents Traladara as aDuchy of the Thyatian Empire ruled by theKarameikos dynasty since 900 AC, the Historyof Karameikos assumes that Traladara is, inthat time, a Province of the Thyatian Empireruled by a series of Imperial Governors notrelated with the Karameikos family, whilethe Karameikos family rules the GrandDuchy from 970 AC.Threshold aims to promote each individual'spersonal version of Mystara, through the MyMystara column. In this issue, we are glad topresent Thorn’s Karameikos. We also aim toenhance community cohesion, and willinterview a different member of thecommunity in each issue. For the joy ofMystara fans, we debut with an interviewwith one of the fathers of the setting, BruceHeard.To round out this first issue, we present youwith a selection of articles detailingKarameikan non player characters andorganizations, as well as geographical essays.Two very different adventures are alsopresented: the outline of the mega-dungeonof Koskatep, and city-based whodunit GuildWars.
