Contributor Pr<strong>of</strong>iles5Phil Porterp.r.porter@herts.ac.ukAlong with being the editor <strong>of</strong> Blended Learning in Practice,Phil Porter is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hertfordshire</strong> in the School <strong>of</strong> Life Sciences andhas been active in glaciological research since 1993. Aftercompleting a PhD (Leeds) in borehole instrumentation <strong>of</strong> fastflowing glaciers, Phil took up lectureships at Manchester andLeeds and joined the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hertfordshire</strong> in 2003. Hiscurrent research interests concern the response <strong>of</strong> thecryosphere to environmental change. Phil is also a LTIteacher taking a lead on „research informed teaching„ and iscurrently preparing a Higher Education Academy (HEA)funded field expedition to the Swiss Alps with Dr Iain Cross(see Iain‟s pr<strong>of</strong>ile below) where they will be working with UHstudents and Swiss scientists on a project to engage our studentswith research fieldwork techniques in geography andenvironmental science.Iain Crossi.cross@herts.ac.ukIain is a lecturer in Physical Geography in the School <strong>of</strong> LifeSciences at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hertfordshire</strong>. Iain completed hisPhD in eutrophication <strong>of</strong> shallow lakes at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Nottinghamin 2009 and continues to expand his research interestsin aquatic environments through collaborative research at Nottinghamand <strong>Hertfordshire</strong>. Since joining the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hertfordshire</strong>in 2009, Iain has contributed to numerous modulesand fieldtrips, and is currently preparing to travel to Switzerlandwith Dr Phil Porter (see Phil‟s pr<strong>of</strong>ile above) to take part in aHEA funded expedition to the Swiss Alps in June 2011. Iain hasalso been awarded a Nuffield Research Bursary to fund collaborativeresearch with a UH undergraduate student duringsummer 2011. Iain‟s teaching draws on a range <strong>of</strong> novel approaches,including electronic voting systems, wikis and videotechnologies. In particular, Iain‟s interests lie in the philosophyand application <strong>of</strong> EVS to improving the undergraduate learningexperience.Blended Learning In Practice May 2011
