<strong>of</strong> application methods which willminimize or prevent hazards <strong>to</strong> humans,pets, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r domestic animals.Seed Treatment & Eleva<strong>to</strong>r PestControl: An applica<strong>to</strong>r that appliespesticides or fumigants <strong>to</strong> seeds orseed s<strong>to</strong>rage areas <strong>and</strong> uses pesticidesin or around <strong>the</strong> eleva<strong>to</strong>r seeds<strong>to</strong>rage facilities. Applica<strong>to</strong>rs in thiscategory must demonstrate practicalknowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> seedsrequiring pesticidal protection <strong>and</strong>application requirements <strong>and</strong> fac<strong>to</strong>rs,such as seed coloration, carriers, <strong>and</strong>surface active agents which influencepesticide binding <strong>and</strong> may affectgermination. They must demonstratepractical knowledge <strong>of</strong> hazards associatedwith h<strong>and</strong>ling, sorting <strong>and</strong>mixing, <strong>and</strong> misuse <strong>of</strong> treated seed,such as introduction <strong>of</strong> treated seedin<strong>to</strong> food <strong>and</strong> feed chains, as well asproper disposal <strong>of</strong> unused treatedseeds. Applica<strong>to</strong>rs must be able <strong>to</strong>demonstrate proper use <strong>of</strong> grainfumigants <strong>to</strong> protect seeds, knowledge<strong>to</strong> assure safe h<strong>and</strong>ling, applicationtechniques, worker exposure <strong>and</strong>protection considerations, <strong>and</strong> re-entryst<strong>and</strong>ards in<strong>to</strong> fumigated structures.Aquatic Pest Control: An applica<strong>to</strong>rwho applies pesticides <strong>to</strong> any st<strong>and</strong>ingor running waters. Applica<strong>to</strong>rs in thiscategory must have knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>aquatic environments in which pesticidesmay be used <strong>to</strong> maintain orimprove <strong>the</strong> health or desired condition<strong>of</strong> that environment. They must havepractical knowledge concerning potentialpesticide effects on plants, fish,birds, beneficial insects, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rorganisms which may be present inaquatic environments. Aquatic PestControl applica<strong>to</strong>rs must demonstratepractical knowledge <strong>of</strong> various water6use situations <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>of</strong>downstream effects. Applica<strong>to</strong>rs shalldemonstrate practical knowledge <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> limited area application.Aquatic Pest Control applica<strong>to</strong>rsmust also demonstrate practicalknowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secondary effectswhich can be caused by improperapplication rates, incorrect formulations,<strong>and</strong> faulty application <strong>of</strong> pesticidesused in this classification. To becertified, Aquatic Pest Control applica<strong>to</strong>rsmust attend a MDA sponsoredtraining program. Persons in thiscategory may be certified as commercial,government or farm (private)applica<strong>to</strong>rs.Right-<strong>of</strong>-Way, Rangel<strong>and</strong>, Pasture,<strong>and</strong> Noncrop Pest Control: Anapplica<strong>to</strong>r who uses pesticides <strong>to</strong>manage weeds or o<strong>the</strong>r vegetation in<strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> public roads,power lines, pipelines, railway rights<strong>of</strong>-way,<strong>to</strong> manage grassl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong>pastures that are not harvested forforage, or o<strong>the</strong>r noncrop areas. Righ<strong>to</strong>f-Way,rangel<strong>and</strong>, pasture, <strong>and</strong>noncrop pest control applica<strong>to</strong>rs shalldemonstrate practical knowledge <strong>of</strong> awide variety <strong>of</strong> environments since<strong>the</strong>se applica<strong>to</strong>rs can traverse manydifferent terrains, including waterways.They shall demonstrate practicalknowledge <strong>of</strong> problems on run<strong>of</strong>f, drift,excessive foliage destruction, <strong>and</strong>potential effects <strong>to</strong> lives<strong>to</strong>ck <strong>and</strong>nontarget organisms. They shalldemonstrate <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> recognizetarget plants <strong>and</strong> differentiate <strong>the</strong>mfrom nontarget plants. They shall alsodemonstrate practical knowledge <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> herbicides, recognize <strong>the</strong>need for containment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se pesticideswithin <strong>the</strong> target application site,<strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irapplication activities in <strong>the</strong> adjacentareas <strong>and</strong> communities.
