where the individual topics are presented like a power-point presentation.
The Ecole de Mars was founded in 1793 and was meant for the training of
the military cadres of the new Republic.
The first half of the publication contains fourteen lessons on military
science, including a historical section: warfare since the invention of gunpowder,
troup manoeuvres, encampments, and fortification amongst others.
The second half concentrates on military administration, and covers
subjects as wide-ranging as procurement of supplies, technical equipment,
food and clothing, with detailed information on necessary amounts, cost,
and allowance for wear and tear (uniforms for the infantry were to last
three years in peacetime, one year in wartime, with a realistic life expectancy
of just six months). Very detailed figures are given for food supplies and
rations, and general food production for the country, with advice on agriculture.
Chapters on encampment and troup movements detail necessary
supplies for tents etc., followed by equipment for the artillery, again with
detailed figures. Army pay and army hospitals with their organisation are
also covered. The final classes are more general, dealing in a more academic
manner with food production, agriculture, fabric technology, leather work,
mines and metals, arms production, and finally army organisation and discipline.
The concluding chapter concentrates on the health of soldiers and
how to preserve it, how to fend off contagious diseases, and how, in general,
to maintain adequate standards of health and hygiene.
