newsflashXerium sales meeting in RomeIn mid-April, the sales teams from the European regionsmet in Rome for a conference that lasted several days. Themain agenda items were the merger of the clothing androlls product categories in Europe announced by Xeriumand the introduction of the new sales and service organizationfor the EMEA region. Led by Ernst Kersch hofer, XeriumVice President Sales & Marketing EMEA, Huyck.Wangner’s(forming fabrics, felts, dryer fabrics, industrial textiles) andHelmut Müller named new manager ofHuyck.Wangner Austria’s plant in GloggnitzHelmut Müller, forty-six, already became acquainted withHuyck.Wangner in Gloggnitz while he was studying tobecome a mechanical engineer, when he toured the steeland steel processing industries looking for a summer jobor contract work. He was hired as head of operational engineeringin 1989. In this capacity, he was responsible formaintenance and capital spending in this area and duringthis time, he managed the most extensiveplant systems modernization and capitalspending program ever undertaken atHuyck.Wangner’s main felt manufacturingfactory. In 2004, he switched to ProductionArea II, where he headed up the needling, finishing and packing activities. He gathereda lot of experience in this area, bothon products and production management. He took overresponsibility for the entire plant last November.Health safety program extremely popularAs always, Huyck.Wangner in Reutlingen initiated many workand health safety activities this year. Employees were especiallypleased about the health safety initiatives undertakenStowe Woodward’s (rolls, roll covers) sales teams met forthe first time to talk about the new strategic alignment. Alsoon the agenda were presentations of the latest productinnovations and case studies from the individual productcategories. And of course time was also spent getting toknow the members of the various regional sales teams andputting a face on the people in the new organization chart. At the conclusion of the sales meeting, attendees visitedHuyck.Wangner’s Italian factory in the town of Latina.Pilates. Huyck.Wangner covered the cost of these seminars, which employees attended on their own time.Andreas Päch appointed Marketing DirectorForming Fabrics and Rolls Xerium EuropeAndreas Päch, thirty-seven, also joined Huyck.Wangner atthe end of last year to take charge of forming fabrics marketingin the EMEA region. He has spent over twenty years inthe paper industry, starting as an apprentice. He was initiallytrained as a paper technologist in a north German specialtyand safety papers mill, and subsequently worked there asa papermaker for a number of years. cover storycess to a team of specialists for all product categories tohelp them when responding to and servicing customers. The team members backing up the customer reps willprovide expertise and unique specialized knowledge ondemand and at any time, based on the specifi c customerproject through all its phases: from developmentand design of new products and customized solutionsto test runs and application-related analyses, up to andincluding extensive paper machine fi eld services at site.In short: Every customer will continue to have the sametrusted partner. But now, that person will be backed bya support team and the extensive knowledge pool thecompany has built up over decades. The new service and sales organization will be split intofour European regions, in which the experienced regionalsales and service teams will now bundle their uniquetechnical know-how and regional market knowledge withthe cross-sector expertise of the entire company in asingle organizational entity.Synergies between product categories add valueThis all-encompassing approach adds signifi cant valuefor customers when it comes to manufacturing and costeffi ciency. Viewing the paper machine as a single entityand tightly coordinating the individual process optimizationsalong the clothing chain (forming – pressing –drying) generates signifi cant added value, be it energysavings or higher production. Now that the formerlyindependent operating divisions have been integrated,Huyck.Wangner and Stowe Woodward Europe will infuture benefi t from valuable synergies. First on the list isthe innovative and fl exible product portfolio, the performancecharacteristics of which will be designed so thatthe product advantages compound from section to section. This applies to the forming fabrics, the press felts, the rolls and the roll covers, right from the developmentstage. Huyck.Wangner and Stowe Woodward have alwaysbeen technology leaders and scored points in theirrespective categories by adding customer value to theirnew clothing and service solutions. The strategic goal to exclusively focus development onadding value for customers rests on four pillars: highlyqualifi ed employees, innovative products and customsolutions to optimize customers’ machines, an all-encompassingservice concept and innovation based on sophisticatedanalytical methods. The key however, is to bundlethese capabilities in an interdisciplinary model that willresult in optimal confi guration of the paper machine.Rezolve – innovation DNA for continuous optimizationXerium, Huyck.Wangner’s and Stowe Woodward’s parent, will launch this philosophy by introducing an integratedproduct and service concept, “Rezolve – Total MachineSolutions”, and merging its two subsidiaries. In the presentmarket environment, where papermakers throughoutthe world face rising energy, raw material and logisticscosts, as well as ever-increasing cost pressures and slowingdemand in a number of segments and regions, themost urgent task for suppliers is to continuously identifyways to innovate their products and services and optimizeprocesses. Considering that clothing and rolls impactabout eighty-six percent of a paper machine’s productioncosts while only accounting for three percent of itscapital cost, there is clearly still considerable potentialfor further improvement. Clothing and roll specialistsstill have many options: from increasing drainage performancein the former and press sections, reducing fiberand power consumption, through improving sheet formingcharacteristics, extending the service life of clothingand rolls to faster changes for paper types and shorteroutages. All these individual measures combined helpnoticeably expand a paper machine’s operating windowand save customers money. However, to optimize customer benefi ts, the boundarybetween the specialized departments must fi rst be eliminated. This is why the “Rezolve” algorithm is continuouslyself-learning, with a fi xed program sequence and a stepby-stepprocedure to define the best solution for optimizingthe performance of a particular paper machine. It isfounded on a global data pool that merges the data fromall of the company’s regions, categories and specialtydepartments as well as measurements and analyticalresults, service reports and details about all clothing androll products. All future enhancements will inherit thesecharacteristics, similar to DNA. When a new product oroptimization solution is required, “Rezolve” will simultaneouslynetwork all reference data associated with aMachineConfigurationApproachMachineOperationalParametersPMC & CoverCharacteristicsEngineAnalyticalModelOpportunityDiscoveryPerformanceOptimizationXeriumGlobal DataXERIUM/quarterly5Communication by Huyck.Wangner and Stowe Woodward Europe

In the area of nonwoven press felts,Huyck.Wangner’s Impact technology delivers impressiveresults, such as immediate machine start-up andtop drainage performance. A new generation of wovenseamed felts called ProSeam was introduced in variousdesigns to suit a variety of paper machine requirements. The products combine improved production performancewith maximum reliability and minimize the timerequired to change felts. In addition, Huyck.Wangneradded advanced performance features to its perennialfavorites in the felt category, axxelerator (for high-speedAnalytical ModelConcurrent Analysisof PMC and RollsParametersCombines PreviousDiagnostic Platformspaper machines) and the tissue felt huyspeed, fromwhich papermakers will benefi t enormously.Stowe Woodward revolutionized the industry with theintroduction of its SMART Roll technology. About 100 rollcovers in Europe already have this technology. About 250SMART Roll systems are in operation around the world. This unique nip monitoring system for presses is especiallybenefi cial when used with Blue Steel polyurethanepress rolls or Rebel PU tissue press rolls. The systemis already being applied on calendar covers, where it isbeing used to monitor the new Genesis generation ofproducts. For papermakers, this continuous zeal to developsomething new – whether it be a product or changes tothe machine – adds signifi cant overall value: higher papermachine effi ciency, reduced operating costs, extendedoperating window and sustainable improvement in competitiveness.Sales and service alliance between Huyck.Wangner and Weger GmbH dissolved after twenty-five yearsOn April 2, 2012, Huyck.Wangner and Weger formallyended their sales and service partnership agreement, which had been the basis for very successful andfriendly cooperation for twenty-five years.Huyck.Wangner Germany GmbH, based in ReutlingenGermany, immediately took over all of Weger GmbH’sservice staff assigned to paper machine clothing androlls to ensure that customers will in future continueto be supported by the same skilled service personnel. The reorganization and expansion was requiredbecause Huyck.Wangner’s American parent company,Xerium Technologies, aims to add more customer valueto the entire clothing and roll portfolio by realigning itsEuropean subsidiaries.Walter Krayl, previously with Weger GmbH for twentyyears and its managing director from 2003 until hebecame Senior Marketing Director ofXerium Europe in April of this year, will alsotake charge of this portfolio for all productcategories in the EMEA region. The new employees (f. l.): Dieter Schobesberger, Ronald Schobesberger,Torsten Jost, Frank Schilling und Selim AyanWalter Krayl6XERIUM/quarterlyCommunication by Huyck.Wangner and Stowe Woodward Europe

The running side structure was specially optimizedto suit positions with strict stability and service life specifications.now also be used for heavy writing and printing papers andformexx is suitable for brown paper types.Improved stability and service lifeService life: The special running side structureimproves the potential service life by up to thirtyper cent.Stability: The design’s bending section moduluswas increased by up to twenty percent by increasingthe running side float and the filamentdiameter.Conventional SSB designs with high volume wear rate areat a considerable disadvantage because of their fabric caliper. The result is water carry and/or water spray, particularlyon fast machines, which in turn has a negative impacton machine hygiene. It also limits drainage performance.Huyck.Wangner’s unique EDC technology represents abreakthrough in fabric weave, which guarantees significantlylonger potential service life with only a small increase infabric caliper. The very successful EDC technology, which is based ona unique, patented weave to control drainage (engineereddrainage channels), maximizes drainage performance andsheet forming efficiency, giving papermakers significantpotential to optimize paper quality and cut energy consumption. The design also widens the operating windowfor formers.Huyck.Wangner has now added “long float” alternativesto its finetexx and formexx product families, significantlyextending the range of applications covered by these twoEDC designs. product news – press feltsStart-up BoosterStart-up Booster – upgrade for press feltsMaximizing production efficiency by increasing machinespeeds higher and higher while at the same time keepingenergy consumption low: this is also the formula thatdefines Huyck.Wangner’s efforts in the development ofits press felts portfolio. The company is one of the top suppliers of press feltsfor the premium segment. The woven double and triplelayer axxelerator und exxact product lines – both perennialfavorites when it comes to optimum press clothingfor fast paper machines – were enhanced last year withthe introduction of the unique Impact yarn technology.Special properties enable every single yarn to absorb anenormous amount of water. The structure behaves like asponge that saturates almost immediately. At the sametime, the yarns are inter-connected by a multidimensionallinked layer that makes the felts very dimensionally stable. The new Start-up Booster, a blend of hydrophilic componentsincorporated into the individual fabrics to suita particular application, takes the press felts to the nextperformance level. The main benefit is that the unusuallyhigh hydrophilic properties of the felt and reduced porevolume of up to twenty percent result in significantlyfaster saturation, which substantially reduces startup time. The key property that gives the new Start-up Boostertechnology upgrade from Huyck.Wangner the ability toachieve even better, faster startups are the very high nipdewatering rates. Other characteristics of the woven feltdesign include low flow resistance, even CMD profile anda smooth surface.Huyck.Wangner has two versions of its individual productlines: The Start-up Booster technology upgrade is availablefor the premium exxact and axxelerator designs, which ensures each product performs optimally throughoutits service life and when the felt is changed. For allother felt designs, the Start-up Booster technology isoptional and is only added upon customer request.Initial field tests of Start-up Booster in the graphic papersegment (newsprint, SC, LWC, Fine) have proven verysuccessful. Site testing has also begun on tissue machines. The impressive test results, across-the-board positiveaxxelerator-Design with new Start-up Booster Technology.exxact-Design with new Start-up Booster Technology.response from customers and strong demand have set thestage to enable Huyck.Wangner to launch the press feltswith the new Start-up Booster feature before the end ofthis year.Felt ConditioningPore Size Distribution8XERIUM/quarterlyCommunication by Huyck.Wangner and Stowe Woodward Europe
