SUTD-MITINTERNATIONALDESIGN CENTRE (IDC)

SUTD-MIT INTERNATIONAL DESIGN CENTRE (IDC)The IDC intends to become the world’spremier scholarly hub for technologicallyintensive design. The IDC is built upon thedevelopment of the following foundations:• Leaders for an Innovation-based EconomyThe IDC research is tightly integrated with SUTD’s curriculum. For instance, the undergraduate education experience incorporates design experiences, facilitated by the IDC, throughout the entire degree programme. At the sametime, the IDC is a source of new ideas for design education, methodology, tools and practices. By interacting with the curriculum, the IDC is catalysingpedagogical innovation and experimentation and developing technicallygrounded leaders.Examples of Key ContributionsInnovations forSocietal NeedsLeaders for anInnovation-basedEconomyIDCIntellectualMerit• Innovations for Societal NeedsIDC faculty, staff and students worktogether to design devices, systemsand services that address strategicneeds of Singapore, the region andthe global community. The IDC hasidentified three Design GrandChallenges: Sustainable BuiltEnvironment, Design with theDeveloping World, and ICT-enabledDevices for Better Living.• Intellectual MeritThe IDC is revolutionising designscience research. Leading scholars inthe IDC scientifically study all aspectsof technical systems and designprocesses, and seek to develop newtools and methods for cutting-edgedesign practice and education. TheIDC research in design scienceis organised around six DesignResearch Thrusts: ExperimentalDesign, Design Computation,Visualisation and Prototyping,Fostering Creativity, Decision Making, and Global Collaboration.ICT-enabled Devices for Better Living(MICA): Cutting-edge technologydevelopment of an integrated sensorplatform using design principles offlexibility, modularity, and scalability.Design with the Developing World /Fostering Creativity:The nanostructure design ofgraphene and MoS2 materials areused as effective tools to developnew, high-performance, andlow-cost energy storage devices.“In five years, the IDC will be recognised as the leadingdesign science research centre in the world.”- Anonymous Scholarly Leader of SUTDDesign “Grand Challenges”Sustainable Built EnvironmentDesign with the Developing WorldICT-enabled Devices for Better LivingExperimental DesignDesign ComputationVisualisation andPrototypingFostering CreativityDecision MakingGlobal CollaborationDesign Research ThrustsICT-enabled Devices for BetterLiving / Fostering Creativity (designprinciples for modular reconfigurablerobots): Modular autonomy in Design.Visualisation and Prototyping (verylarge scale prototyping): Opticalreconstruction and rapid prototypingare interactively integrated, illuminatinga new area for reverse engineeringDesign Science.
