Mrs. Levy, anauthor, spoke to the students abouther love of writing. She alsodiscussed how she gets around viawheelchair — a special need whichresulted from a childhood illness. Mrs.Levy made the children aware of thefact that a disability is not whatdefines a person, rather, it is just onecomponent of someone’s life. Shesensitized the children to the barriers and challengesoften faced by people with disabilities.LOST AND FOUNDNow is a great time for you to claim your belongingsfrom our overflowing lost and found boxes. Erev Shabbos Parashas Vayechi 5771Dear Parents,Our students and staff were privileged this week to hear from Mrs. Chava Willig Levy, a prolific writer, who iswell known in Orthodox circles for her accomplishments in life. Her main objective in speaking to our childrenwas to convey her feeling that on the list of important things to know about her, being confined to a wheelchair asa result of childhood polio is `only number four’. (Ask your child what numbers 1,2 and 3 are.) She stated thatshe is a happy person, but that living with a disability is hard. For those of us who don’t live with a significantdisability, we can’t begin to fathom what HARD means. Nevertheless, the disability, the hardness can be a steppingstone to greatness. We and especially our children can learn so much from her statement and attitude.Too many people misinterpret “hard” as “bad.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Those for whom everythingis easy turn out to be the least motivated, least sensitive and least accomplished of all. Our children need tobe encouraged to do things that are hard, and not to avoid things that are hard. We learn in Tanach that AdamL’Amal Yulad (Iyov 5:7)– a person is fulfilled by hard work, by meeting challenges and by stretching him or herselfbeyond current limitations (see Malbim). It is most fitting that in this and next week’s Parshiyos, we are introduced to two individuals with disabilities, who play pivotal roles in our people’s history. Chushim ben Dan, a deaf grandson of Yaakov Avinu, who took decisiveaction to maintain the dignity of Yaakov at his funeral (Sotah 13a), and of course, Moshe Rabbeinu, whowas the greatest leader the Jewish People and the world has ever seen, despite a speech disability. If we were to examine closely everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, we would find that without exception, everyonehas a disability, an area of relative weakness that is significantly below the average range of people. Whatmakes one weakness a life changing disability and another weakness an inconvenience of far less significance? Itseems safe to say that peoples’ attitudes and expectations are the greatest factor in that determination. Some disabilitiesmake life very hard – but one’s attitude is crucial in determining his or her own happiness and satisfaction, and that is definitely within the person’s control, while the disability itself is not.Our children need this lesson every day – their own happiness and outlook on life is not dependent upon externalfactors – history is replete with happy people who appeared to have everything stacked against them, while someof the most miserable people were those born with the proverbial `silver spoon in their mouth’. The attitude wemodel for them will be the most important determinant in their developing view of themselves and their situation.Let us look to worthy role models and accept the challenges Hashem has determined are the exact set of circumstancesneeded for us to fulfill our role in this world. In this way we can inspire our children to greatness and happiness,no matter what the `hard’ parts of their life are.Best wishes for a happy, upbeat Shabbos,Rabbi Kalman Baumann
