NURSERY – MORAH TAMITu B’Shevat- the birthday of the trees- was thefocus of our week’s activities. We began our week bylearning how Tu B’Shevat is celebrated in Eretz Yisroel andlooked at pictures of the Shivas Haminim. We talked aboutthe different parts of a plant- the roots, the stem, the leavesand the flowers. We learned that a healthy plant needs air,sun and water to grow. We also learned about the differentparts of the tree- the trunk, the branches and the leaves. We sang many songs for Tu B’Shevat and listened to thestory How A Seed Grows by Helene Jordan. For Parashas Va’era, we talked about Paroh’srefusal to let Bnei Yisroel leave Mitzraim and the tenmakkkos which Hashem brought upon Mitzraim aspunishment for this refusal. The children were fascinated tohear how everything which the Mitzrim tried to drink turnedto blood while everything which Bnei Yisroel drank stayedfresh and clear. We had a wonderful time acting out theeffect of makkas tzefardaya on the Mitzrim and enjoyedsinging the song “One Morning When Paroh Awoke In HisBed.”One morning when Paroh awoke in his bedThere were frogs on his head and frogs in his bedFrogs on his nose and frogs on his toesFrogs here, frogs thereFrogs were jumping everywhere.NURSERY - MORAH SUSANThis week, we continued our unit on The FiveSenses. We learned about the sense of smell and thesense of sight. For the sense of smell; onions, cinnamon, pickles, vanilla extract, pepper, chocolateand perfume were placed in smelling jars. The childrenthen tried to guess what was in each container. Theyalso went on an “odor walk.” The children smelledobjects in the room such as blocks, paint, the carpetand the sink. They talked about what smells good, what smells bad , what smells a little and what smells alot.As our art project, we created a nose and aneye. We also played games to help us develop ourvisual skills. The books What Your Nose Knows by JaneBelk Mocure, The Five Senses– Smell by Maria Ruis,Look At Your Eyes by Paul Showers, Seeing Things byAllan Fowler and Look In the Mirror by Sam and BerylEpstein were read to the children. This week, we placed objects in one to onecorrespondence with another set of objects. PRE-KI, II & III– MOROT ETTIE & HEIDIFor Parashas Va’era, we learned about the firstseven makkos and the reaction of Pharaoh to thesemakkos. The children were amazed that Pharaohhardened his heart and did not let the Jews leaveMitzrayim even though he was getting such terriblepunishments. We discussed why the first three makkoswere initiated by Aharon and not by Moshe. We learnedthat we have to show appreciation and sensitivity toanyone who performs a kindness to us.This week, we are learning the letters kaf, chafand chaf sofis. The children were taught that the chafsofis can only come at the end of a word. Some of theHebrew language vocabulary words that were taught thisweek include:כלבכדורכסאכפהכובעכוסכתרכחולכתוםThe following phrases were added to ourHebrew language unit focusing on ochel:אבא שותה ייןילב שותה חלבילדה שותה מיםיש לי חלב,‏ מיץ ומיםPRE-KI, II & III-MOROT JUDY & NECHAMAAir pressure was the focus of our week’sactivities. The concluding topic in our unit on air was “AirCan Push.” The children used an air machine to pushdifferent objects into the air. Items such as feathers, cotton balls, pom poms, tissues and other light weightitems were pushed up by the air pressure. The childrenwere also able to blow paint through straws to createworks of art.Our letter of the week was the letter “Ff”. ThePre-K children sounded out words such as feather, float, four, five, flower, fingers, fish, fun and so many otherwords. As a special treat, the children made their ownFrench fries and even got to eat them!It was a pleasure to meet with the parents thisweek. The children were so proud to share theirclassroom work with you. Some of our favorite “Ff” books this week wereFerdinand The Bull by Munro Leaf and Five LittleMonkeys by Eileen Christelow. The children also learned the song “5 LittleSpeckled Frogs.”Five little speckled frogsSitting on a speckled logEating some most delicious bugsYum! Some Hebrew phrases welearned were:אני אוכל בננהאני אוהבת אבטיחWe spent the week reviewing the letters Alephthrough Chaf. We combined them with the kamatz, patach and tzereh. We worked in our Aleph Bais books. The yeladim know that by practicing and reviewing, theywill become Aleph Bais experts. For Parashas Va’era, we made a Mitzri coveredwith the makkos that we discussed in the parsha. Welearned that Hashem will always punish our enemies andhelp Am Yisroel if we do the mitzvos and daven toHashem. We enjoyed listening to the book The TenPlagues by Shoshana Lepon. In Project Derech, we learned that it is a mitzvahnot to disobey (or say no to) a parent. [However, if youcannot obey, you may ask politely in a questioning way;such as “Mother, is it possible that...?]KINDERGARTEN I, II & III– MOROT BERNEY & HEIDIWhat an extraordinary week our kindergartnershad—one filled with so many exciting activities! Weread our second story entitled Ed’s Sled and learned therule of apostrophe S. We now know that theapostrophe shows possession. We retold the Ed’s Sledstory putting pictures in their correct sequence.Other “Ee” activities included exercising, making envelopes, and writing about what we areexcellent at doing. We listened to the stories ElephantBaby by Ann McGovern and Babar the Elephant by JeanDebrunhoff. In honor of the letter “Ee”, we played aGame called “Scrambled Eggs.” We read sentences onthe board that were scrambled. We had to unscramblethem. The first word was underlined. For example: catThe is lost . (The cat is lost.)We concluded our unit on magnets whichwas amazing , educational and fun. We learned thatiron and steel are attracted to a magnet and thatmagnets can attract iron and steel though non magneticmaterials. We determined that the ends are thestrongest part of a magnet and that one magnet can beused to create new magnets. We also concluded thatmagnets can attract as well as repel other magnets.Of course, the highlight of our week was our tripto Jungle Island.Newsletter 4

Erev Shabbos Parashas Vaera Rosh Chodesh Shevat 5773Dear Parents,The first three of the Makos (plagues) detailed in this week’s Parsha, were actually put into motion by Aharon HaKoheinand not Moshe Rabbeinu, the more obvious choice for the job. Rashi (7:19) explains this by telling us that the NileRiver, from where the blood and frogs emerged, had protected Moshe as an infant. In Perek 8 Pasuk 12 Moshe againdefers to Aharon to initiate the plague of lice and Rashi explains that since the lice emerged from the dust of the earth, and the dust had hidden the body of the Egyptian that Moshe killed, it was not appropriate to be stricken by Moshe.Later commentaries explain Rashi was referring to an obligation of Hakoras HaTov, gratitude on the part of Moshe tothe body of water and the earth itself, for their roles in saving his life. That obligation made it impossible for Moshe todirectly cause an interruption in the normal functioning of these entities. The lesson in the obligation of Hakoras HaTov is striking in that Moshe was thereby unable to qualify as the one to carryout Hashem’s will to inflict these plagues on the Egyptians. What is perhaps more striking is that this obligation ofgratitude was towards inanimate objects – the river and the earth! We could more easily understand Moshe’s need toexpress gratitude to another person who would be aware and be emotionally uplifted by being thanked. At least wecould see how Moshe’s action (or inaction) benefitted someone else. But what purpose is there in saying thank you towater or the dust of the earth??What emerges is a profound insight not only into the obligation of gratitude, but into a Jew’s behavior in general. Wetend to judge actions in terms of how they help or affect others. But that is only a part of the picture. The predominantfactor in any analysis of the ultimate benefit or detriment of any action is the effect it has on the person doing the action! For example, we know Chazal established the extra stringency of Maaris Ayin – that in some circumstances, evenan otherwise permissible act that only looks like a forbidden act is also not allowed. A contemporary example of thatwould be eating pizza topped with salami and soy cheese (with no signage indicating the cheese is parve). More to thepoint – according to the Gemara (Beitza 9A) the law of Maaris Ayin applies even when a person is alone in his ownhouse, when the only witness is himself! There is no other who is being impacted by his action. This is extremely important in regards to the chinuch of our children. If they do something inappropriate, and excuse itwith “I was only kidding,” or “she doesn’t mind when I talk/act that way” or “it’s not my mess, why do I have to cleanit up” or “what I smashed was not usable anymore anyway” they are missing this point entirely. Every action, decisionand growth step is significant because it impacts on the doer’s values, motivation and ultimate development as a servantof Hashem. The story is told of Rav Shmuel Salant, zt’l, Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Yerusholayim at the dawn of the 20 thcentury. One day he heard his 12 year old granddaughter let out a stream of invectives that shocked him. Upon investigation, she explained she was shooing away a cat. When she saw Rav Salant’s troubled look, she reiterated “it was onlya cat.” Her grandfather responded “yes, but it was your mouth.”-continued on next page-Newsletter 5

We all are aware of the need for a child to have a healthy self-esteem, to view him or herself as an important, significant and worthy person. Just consider what an enhancement it would be to that self-image ifour children could understand that the actions of a Jew are significant, irrespective of anyone else’s reactionor even awareness of it. What comes out of their mouth, their actions and inactions are of cosmic importance!Could anyone be more significant than that? By implanting and reinforcing this message in ourchildren, we will then be able to look with pride and true Nachas at how we set them on a direct path togreatness.Best wishes for a wonderful Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh,Rabbi Kalman BaumannNewsletter 6
