Back row from left: Freddie Dotson (On-site Eng.), Matt Lewis (On-site Eng.),Warner Brickey (Shop), Chuck Morell (Technician), Robert Feathers (Shop Leader). Front row from left: Dave Harkerload(Shop), Wes Sandidge (On-site Eng.), Glenna Neal (Inside sales/ Inventory), Paula Abadie (PA to R. Greatti) and RichGreatti (VP Sales). It started out as a hope and a dream:the thought of AESSEAL ® being asupplier to Eastman ChemicalCompany, which is located innortheast Tennessee, just 90 milesnorth of Knoxville. In late 1997, a couple of Convertor II TM sealswere supplied to Eastman for a Kinney vacuumpump. From there, opportunities were given toAESSEAL ® to supply mixer seals and others.Eastman quickly found out that AESSEAL ® wasfor real and we could supply a quality product ata very competitive price. This quickly spread toall areas of the plant as we began to supplyseals for various applications. As AESSEAL ® began to make a name for itselfat this site, it did not take long for Eastman torecognize the benefits of having AESSEAL ® as avendor.Eastman put together a bid package for thethree major suppliers of seals to the site.AESSEAL ® was also included in this package. The total number of items to bid exceeded 1173line items. It took 3 long hard weeks of working12 to 14 hours a day to complete the bidpackage, which was submitted in August 1998.By September 1998, Eastman sent two wellrespected engineers to the UK for a tour of theAESSEAL ® facilities. What they found was aclean and modern facility with people whowanted to be there. The engineers walked away from the visit andwere impressed with the facilities but most of allwere amazed at the people who worked atAESSEAL ® . Their overall attitude convinced theengineers that AESSEAL ® had something goingon and they wanted to be a part of it.Shortly after the visit, it was announced thatAESSEAL would be the Channel Supplier toEastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN.The scramble took place with AESSEAL ®providing CSSs and BCURCs in less than 4weeks as the "Seals of Choice". A building wasalso under construction on-site and thus theKingsport Branch was formed. The original idea was to have this facility as asupport center for Eastman while all the sealswere to be built in Knoxville. As the demandbecame apparent so did the vision to have thisfacility as a Service Center to build seals ratherthan have this done in Knoxville.Kingsport began to build the seals to meet theKingsport facilities demand in January 1999.Since AESSEAL ® was a Channel Supplier,Kingsport supplied all the seals and seal partsregardless of the manufacture of the seal. Thelabour for seal repairs was being handled byanother shop within the Eastman facility.

Things began to go extremely well and a few ofthe other sites like Arkansas Eastman andEastman Resins, Inc., formerly LawterInternational, Inc., began to use AESSEAL ® formechanical seals.Another big break came when AESSEAL ® tookover the seal repairs in April 2001. This openedup the door for Kingsport to become more thana provider of new seals to Eastman but couldrepair all makes and models of seals regardlessof manufacture.A plan was drafted and the equipment waspurchased to handle the repair business inKingsport. In the first month, the Kingsportfacility inherited a backlog of over 150 seals andmore arriving daily from the Eastman sites.Within 2 months, the backlog was down to 25seals with an average of 14 days from start tofinish for a repair regardless of the manufacture. Now that the facility was in place, Kingsportbegan operating independently of Knoxville.Carrying its own stock, ordering from the UKand outside vendors began to become the dailyroutine in Kingsport. Although this was not anunusual task, this allowed Kingsport to operatelike Derby, UK as a service center.Word spread quickly and we began to receivecompetitor seals, mainly mixer units fromdistributors and our own direct salesforce. These seals were handled like our own due tothe level of expertise that existed in Kingsport. With trained staff and several years experiencebetween them, handling seals from 0.500" to14.000" diameters was not a problem. As more AESSEAL ® seals were being used atEastman, mean-time-between-failure began toincrease and the revenue began to decrease.Rather than layoff, we decided to haveKingsport handle the recently acquired Noveoncontract in April 2002. With this new contract, the Kingsport Branch could hire an additionalperson and expand the facility to meet thedemands. Now with 3 on-site engineers and 1 technician,3 shop people and 2 inside salescorespondents, the Kingsport Branch wasready for the challenge.Today, the Kingsport facility operates as abranch of AESSEAL, Inc. and is fully staffed withcapabilities of handling all of the AESSEAL, Inc.functions with the exception of Accounting, which is done in Knoxville.Although Eastman and Noveon are the maincustomers, the Kingsport Branch handles allspecials and is capable of building and repairingall makes and models of mechanical seals.Above: Robert Feathers (left) and Matt Lewis (Right) with a fixed 10.000” Mixer seal.

TMMagTecta Update..........With over £100k (€/$ 150k) WORLDWIDE SALES in the last 4months since product launch, the MagTecta is proving to be themost successful product ever launched in AESSEAL ® history.Applications are coming in thick and fast. Hundreds of installation successes arebeing recorded throughout the world, in every industry sector.Particular success is apparent in gearboxes, process pump bearingchambers and roller applications where bearing chamber contamination and/or lossof oil is a major issue. The MagTecta design combines the latest AESSEAL ® "pure innovation" with itsworld-leading, customer orientated, "modularity" concept. In true AESSEAL ® fashion, the MagTecta range is modular meaning less inventory is carried withoutsacrificing customer service. The MagTecta is a DOUBLE magnetically energized mechanicalseal, with magnetic attraction between two stationary components. This dual seal design is extremely valuable in hose-downapplications.A Pulp and Paper end user on the West Coast of the USAinstalled a MagTecta on a Goulds 3196MT. The pump wasput into service in a condensate location, using a CDSA/VSE/10ltr/W3 system. Then a condensate line, probably 160+ degree F (70deg C) CONDENSATE was directed at the seal for 4 days!!! Onemonth later, it is still working with no moisture in the bearing housing.See the web based case history 1334 for further information. The design has no rubbing elastomers to wear and replace. Rubbingelastomers damage and wear mating components, whilst simultaneouslyincreasing equipment power consumption. An example of the benefit of this is shown in web case history 1392. A 70mm MagTectaTXS was installed on a Screw press gearbox in the Pulp and Paper Industry in South East ofEngland. The MagTecta was sealing the oil filled bearing chamber. The customer had a bucket under theprevious lip seal arrangement. EVERY DAY the bucket was filled with oil, which leaked from thegearbox. The operators had to empty the bucket and refill the gearbox. This involved 1 hour perday of their time.MagTecta Multimedia VideoThe benefits of the AESSEAL ® MagTecta can be seen inthe interactive video on CD-ROM and also on theAESSEAL ® website.Left: TheMagTectavideo on theAESSEAL ®website.Split in to four different sections, the video shows theproblems with lip seals, the problems with labyrinth seals, the problems with single mechanical seal bearingprotectors and finally the benefits of the MagTecta. This video can be viewed live on the AESSEAL ® website atwww.aesseal.com under the products section or requestedon CD-ROM by email from marketing@aesseal.com.Right: TheMagTectavideo onCD-ROM.The Movie Lip Seal Labyrinth Seal Single Mechanical MagTecta

TMA Bearing Protection RevolutionTMThe leaking oil would also fall onto coating operators, which created a healthand safety issue. Every four to six months they would have to machine newshaft sleeves and repair seal housings of at a cost of approximately £160.00(€/$ 240.00) a time. The MagTecta was installed at the end of March and iscurrently leak free. Within 1 week it paid for itself. Needless to saythat the end user operators are delighted with the performance.Probably, the highest degree of MagTecta success has come from the steelprocessing industry.2 off 120mm M-TXS MagTectas were installed on either side of a horizontalroller in an UK Steel processing plant. The MagTectas protect the roller bearingsand operate in an oil splash at 300 rpm.The MagTectas replaced lip seals which leaked on equipmentstartup. The oil seals also allowed oil to escape causing a firehazard to the plant. Occasionally the leaked oil fell onto thefinished rolled steel and caused the scrapping of material. The Magtectas were installed in early February 2003 andhave been running leak free ever since. See web basedcase history 1449 for further information.Furthermore, the design does not include a complexlabyrinth arrangement, which could clog or seizeparts with close radial and axial running clearances. The labyrinth seal was the primary cause offailure on a Worthington Simpson 50 CP200pump in a plant in the Wet Corn Millingindustry.30mm and 24mm MagTectas were installed onthe pump and motor side of the bearing chamber running at3000rpm on oil. The contract account now wishes to standardizeand fit Magtectas on all future pump repairs.See the AESSEAL ® website case history database, in the "Applications”section of the AESSEAL ® website or on the “Environmental SoftwareSuite", for further MagTecta successes and installation records.Above: The MagTectasample case availablefrom AESSEAL ® . Packing More into Our AwardWinning Customer ServiceOriginally the 'Special Products Division' (SPD)of AESSEAL plc was formed to administer noncoresealing business (core business is thedesign and manufacture of mechanical seals). Therefore over the past 20 years, this divisionhas been responsible for some of the moreobscure sealing items such as: MechanicalPacking, Die Formed Packing, Flange Joints,PFTE Gaskets, Rubber Mouldings, PlasticMouldings, Hydraulic Seal, Cut Joints, etc....Last year over 40% of the SPD sales wereattributed to mechanical packing and the restmade up from Goretex® products (20%) andFlange Seal (20%), but the growth of overallsales was diminishing year on year, whichconflicted with the company which is growingglobally!gland packingrangeTherefore it became obvious that the SPD was dying on its feet without any true investment, interest or direction; which if allowed to continue, could detract from the overall sales effort ofevery sales engineer. This full graphite bellows seal is theonly patented cartridge seal that fitsinside radial cross sectionalspaces as small as0.312” (8mm).making the BSFG atruly advantageoussealing solution.BSFGBellows Single FullGraphite CartridgeSealSo, at the end of 2002 JohnPedder (UK Sales Manager)was presented with thechallenge of resurrectingthis product range andgiving it a new lease of life.John's first task was toconduct a SWOT analysisand identify strengths andweaknesses, and as aresult, this year weemployed a 'productspecialist'.His name is ChristopherDean, who came toAESSEAL ® from NW Pump& Valve and before that wasthe UK Product Specialistfor another sealmanufacturer.50% More Bellows...12Industry Standard? 50 % Extra...Increases Seal Life®To find out more about the BSFG or any of ourproducts and services visit our website atWeb: www.aesseal.comEmail: marketing@aesseal.comThe plan is to phase thedivision back into themarket and generateinterest resulting in moresales, starting straight away.AESSEAL plcMill CloseTempleboroughRotherhamS60 1BZUnited KingdomTel: +44 (0) 1709 369966Fax: +44 (0) 1709 720788© Copyright AESSEAL plc 2003AESSEAL Inc.10231 Cogdill RoadSuite 105KnoxvilleTN 37932USATel: 865 531 0192Fax: 865 531 0571Plans are to grow sales by100% over the next fewyears.

ISOS - Inflatable Shut Off SealThe ISOS, which is fitted between the pumpand the radially divided seal, forms a separateseal when required, allowing the quick and easyremoval of the mechanical seal. The ISOS works on the principle ofsurrounding the shaft with an inflatableelastomeric bladder. Under normal operatingconditions, when the mechanical seal isworking, the bladder remains unpressurized.Above left: A sectioned view of the ISOS mechanical seal.Above right: The new ISOS literature. Request a copyfrom marketing@aesseal.com.Most engineers will relate to theproblems encountered wheninstalling or removing a radiallydivided mechanical seal fromrotating equipment. However, the biggest single problem is that thewhole system has to be drained or isolated sothat liquids do not pour out when the seal isremoved. This can sometimes take hours oreven days depending on the application - alllost production time. The AESSEAL ® ISOS, the Inflatable Shut OffSeal, solves this major problem. When the mechanical seal fails or needsremoving, the bladder can be inflated therebymechanically sealing the shaft. The seal canthen be easily removed without draining orisolating the equipment.Above: A cross section view of the ISOS with a radiallydivided seal (RDS) mechanical seal. This shows how theRDS can be removed once the ISOS is inflated.New AESSEAL Argentina SubsidiaryAESSEAL ® is continuing its plans tobecome Number 1 globally in the sealindustry by creating another newsubsidiary in South America. This new development in Argentina follows theformation of AESSEAL Brasil and AESSEALMexico in 2002.The joint venture between AESSEAL ® distributorPyC SERVICIOS PETROQUIMICOS, owned bythe Nogues family, and AESSEAL plc has led tothe formation of AESSEAL Argentina S.A. inBuenos Aires. This will increase the global presence ofAESSEAL ® to 36 branches and subsidiaries andmove the company closer to its plans for apresence in every major market.Group Managing Director, Chris Rea said"South America offers tremendous opportunitiesfor AESSEAL ® and we believe the Nogues familyare the ideal partners to drive our businessforward in Argentina, where the new jointventure will accelerate market development.“We are also excited about the opportunity thiscreates in Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile, with the first priority being the formation ofAESSEAL Chile, in the 3rd Quarter of 2003".AESSEAL ® , the UK's 2nd largest manufacturerof mechanical seals, achieved sales to morethan 50 countries in 2002.Following the opening of AESSEAL Argentina, the Group CEO, Gordon Bridge, also reports"We are well on the way to achieving targetsales growth of 20% in 2003".

Asa direct result of the seal failure, huge losses inproduction were encountered every hour.Their usual supplier quoted 10 days for deliveryof a replacement seal which clearly wasn'tacceptable so, in despair, they contactedAESSEAL ® , a company they had heard of butnot yet tried.AESSEAL ® agreed to help even though they hadto design this non-standard seal early in themorning of Easter Saturday. By mid afternoonon Saturday the seal had been manufactured, assembled and inspected. It was delivered to Heathrow to catch theovernight flight to Canada and was picked up atthe other end by an AESSEAL ® engineer whohad been waiting for it. By the end of EasterSunday the AESSEAL ® engineer had supervisedthe installation and the seal was runningsmoothly.Another emergency occurred at a largechemical plant in Germany.
