Behind them is a ravine, spanned by a 227-metre iron
chain. In the middle is a shining golden star.
According to legend, a Knight of St. John named Blacas
put up the chaîne de l’étoile when he made an unlikely
return home from a crusade. He had been captured
by the hostile Saracens in 1249 and thought his time
was up. In captivity, he vowed that if by some miracle he
were to make it back alive, he would thank the Virgin
Mary – with a star.
