Chapter 4SUPPORT EQUIPMENT4-10. <strong>Support</strong> equipment required to maintainn ALSE varies throughout the Army due to differinggeographical areas and mission requirements. Basic equipment such as handtools, test sets, refrigerators,vacuumsealers, sewing machines, and microwaves are common among all units. It should be noted,however, that theree are no standard or authorized ALSE tool kits currently in the Army inventory.Specialized equipment used to maintain flotationand oxygen equipment is specified in appropriate TMs.Equipment manualsalso list common tools required to perform maintenance in MACs. A sample ofcommonly used support equipmentis depicted infigure 4-5.ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL4-11. Adequate heating and air conditioning systems are required in ALSSS shops to prevent damage toequipment and supplies (especially medical supplies) from mildew, hot and cold extremes, andcontamination from dust, dirt, and other foreign material. Temperature should range between 60 ºF and 75ºF at 60 percent relative humidity and with the provision of filtered air. ALSSS shop establishment is criticalduringdeployments; all shops must meet the requirements noted above, if possible, depending uponlocation and available work shelters and storage areas.PERSONAL HYGIENE4-12. ALSS personnel should present a neat and clean appearance at all times. Smoking, eating, anddrinking are not permitted on or around workbenches. Personnel with skindiseases or contagious viralinfections must not be allowed to work in ALSS shops. Unit safety personneland a representative from theflight surgeon's office must periodically inspect shops in accordance with regulations and unit SOP.SHOP SAFETYFigure 4-5.
