MiTOOLS HAVE ARRIVED!
When you are just starting out, you
need all the help you can get. Once
Apprentices have completed the fi rst
three months of their Apprenticeship
they become eligible for a payment
of $800, thanks to the Tools for the
Trade initiative offered by the Federal
Government.
After consultation with our customers we have
developed the Tradelink MiTools kit to provide
apprentices with a comprehensive kit that gives
them exactly what they need when starting out and
stops them borrowing your tools!
The MiTools kit is a 37 piece, Trade Quality
Plumbers Toolkit with tools supplied by Kincrome
and Super Ego, one of the world leaders in the
manufacture of plumbing tools. This isn’t just
a starter kit, but something that should last
throughout the Apprenticeship and beyond.
It comes in a massive 62ltr heavy duty, fully welded
Aluminium Tool box which measures 335mm x
765mm x 250mm and has fl ush fi tted chrome
plated handles. To keep all the new equipment safe
and sound it is also key lockable.

Demand for ‘green buildings’ has increased
signifi cantly and with that increased demand for
recycled and rain water distributions systems,
particularly in commercial projects, REHAU has
now increased the range of Lilac (recycled) and
green (rain) pipe systems from 16 to 63mm.
The sleek new colour of the RAUTITAN Platinum
provides a distinct high quality appearance for your
installation but most importantly provides a distinct
difference from the black RAUTITAN PX fi ttings to
allow for an easier and quicker visual inspection of
joint security.

Standard AS 4032.2, the HYDROBOSS
Tempering Valve product range includes both
standard and solar variants and is available with
either 15mm or 20mm compression connections.
The HYDROBOSS Tempering Valve range
has been especially designed for installation in
residential or commercial premises to provide
the controlled delivery of hot water to bathroom
facilities at an appropriate temperature. The outlet
temperature is factory set at 50°C but is fully
adjustable from 40°C to 50°C to meet end use
temperature needs.
The HYDROBOSS Solar Tempering Valve
is designed and built to handle the higher
temperatures typically associated with solar hot
water systems.
Both valves incorporate an anti-scald thermal shut
off system designed to shut off the outlet water
fl ow should the cold water supply be interrupted,
reducing the risk of scalding to the user or their
loved ones.

WORKING WITH GAS
In March 2009 two plumbing apprentices
were seriously injured while purging
the main (natural gas) supply line to a
residential tower. Flammable gases from
the supply line ignited when released into
a plant room of the residential tower block,
which contained multiple ignition sources.
While an investigation is still underway to establish
the cause, the incident serves as an important
reminder of the potentially catastrophic results of
the uncontrolled release of fl ammable gas within a
building.
It is critical to follow standard control measures with
relation to the purging of large volume installations
of fuel gas. It is also important to consider the size
(both the diameter and length) of the installation,
the pressure of the gas supply and the type of gas
(heavier or lighter than air).
The purge outlet should be at least six metres
away from any ignition source and well clear of any
opening into a building. The purge should not be
commenced until an area has been defi ned, made
safe and cleared of all ignition sources including
naked fl ames, pilot lights and electrical switchgear.
Where the network operator permits other persons
to purge a service pipe, the purge is to be carried
out in accordance with the network operator’s
procedures.
Is the environment surrounding the installation likely
to be impacted? Consider also the need for an inert
gas purge and the best method of verifying that the
purge is complete. Perhaps most important is the
requirement for personnel with adequate experience
and responsibility carry out purging operations.
Contact Dial Before You Dig to obtain plans of
mains in the street. Identify the location of the
mains to determine if they are within the area of
your planned work. Use a pipe locator if available or
contact a third party pipe locating service provider.
If working inside a property, identify that the
house/dwelling is connected to gas by visually
checking for a gas meter, valve, exposed pipe etc.
or interviewing the property owner and if required,
contact your local gas authority to arrange for a
temporary disconnection.
If excavating or boring near or over the main, NEVER
use machinery – always dig carefully by hand and
expose pipes to ensure adequate clearance between
your activity/pipe/conduit and the gas main.

OVENTROP HYDROMAT DP –
DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE REGULATOR
Available in both fl anged and BSP
threaded versions, using the Oventrop
Hydromat DP will lead to a longer life
for system parts and increased system
effi ciencies, producing energy savings
and lower end-user costs.
Oventrop’s differential pressure regulators,
Hydromat DP, are proportional regulators designed
to work without auxiliary energy to ensure constant
differential pressure within a necessary proportional
band across a system.
As the differential pressure in the installation
increases, the valve disc closes down and then
re-opens as the pressure falls. The regulator
reduces the excess differential pressure until the
set pressure in the pipe is reached.
When used in conjunction with a manual balancing
valve such as the Oventrop Hydrocontrol R or F,
it will keep constant design fl ow at heating and
cooling units.
End user energy savings and reduced contractor
hardware costs are achieved by installing the valve
in the return line and connecting it via a capillary
tube to the supply line.
This suffi ciently services multiple units at once
to minimise overfl ows, meaning valves are not
required to be installed at each terminal. Instead, a
single valve should be installed for an entire fl oor or
branch in a building to regulate an entire zone.
To ensure your system can be controlled by a
Hydromat DP, they are available in two fl anged
and two BSP threaded versions, all with their own
presetting pressure
options.
The two BSP threaded
versions are available
in DN15-DN50, with
presetting options of
5-30kPa or 25-70kPa.
The fl anged versions suit DN65-DN100 with
presetting options of 20-100kPa or 40-180kPa.
All Hydromat DP’s can operate to a maximum
working temperature of 120°C and are constructed
of either a cast iron (fl anged) or bronze (BSP) body,
bronze bonnet, DZR resistant brass stem and a
stainless steel seat and soft seal disc.
