Portuguese PavilionThe host country's pavilion introduced the Portuguesecontribution to the discovery and conquest of the ocean.The centerpiece of the show was an exhibit entitled“A Viagem” (The Journey) and reflected Portugal's legacyto the modern-day world.For BARCO, the World Expo in <strong>Lisbon</strong> started well beforethe official opening date. BARCO Projection Systems wasinvolved from the initial design concept to theimplementation of complex visualization techniques neededfor the Portuguese pavilion. "The Journey" unfolded inthree parts, each relying on different projection techniques.


Portuguese PavilionInventors of The FutureThe exhibit entitled “Inventors of the Future”offered a general assessment of our blueplanet. The message emphasized that the futureof mankind depends on the equilibrium ofearth's oceans.Visitors to the exhibit were invited to participatedirectly in the process of determining our planet'sfuture. Real-time image rendering and digitallyrecorded portraits of visitors were blended into ahigh resolution movie which was displayed on 3BARCOGRAPHICS 8200 LCD projectors on an impressive rearscreen measuring 9 m wide by 3 m high (29.5 x 9.8 ft.).


Belgian PavilionThe Flanders area of the Belgianpavilion was a hemisphere consistingof triangular steel elements whichsymbolized the relationship ofscientific knowledge associatedwith water and air.Two BARCODATA 8200 projectorsmounted in a centrally placed"sarcophagus" projected visual imagesof Flanders and its inhabitants on4m (13 ft.) wide screens positionedon the inside of the dome-shapedstructure. A third BARCODATA 8200projector installed on the ceilingprojected images of 3.1 x 2.3 m(10.2 x 7.5 ft.) on the sarcophagus itself.A BARCODATA 3200 projector wasused to present Belgium'sactivities in the field of waterand soil treatment and damconstruction. The unit alsoprojected animated imagesof sea life above theentrance of the bar whereBelgium presented it'stradition of excellence infine beers.projector 3projector 1 projector 2Pavilion of theOlympicCommitteeAt the Olympic Committee pavilion,BARCO projectors were used to showpictures of Portuguese athletes andnautical sports linked to thetheme of the exposition.The designer of the pavilion mountedthe projectors themselves in a highlystylistic fashion. 12 BARCODATA 2100LCD projectors were mounted indifferent ways: some used mirrors,others projected directly onto thescreens. The projection screenswere made of canvas to enhancethe nautical feeling of this highlyinnovative pavilion.BARCO provided more than entertainment-oriented large screenprojection on World Expo 98. BARCO was also active in theoptimization of security and transportation systems within theWorld Expo 98 site.The control room at the World Expo ‘98 was responsible formonitoring the exposition ground of some 60 hectares (150 acres)and 115 participant countries, companies and organizations.To tackle this job, a control system utilizing a BARCO DisplayWall was selected. The control system was supplied incollaboration with Alcatel France and consisted of of a 67"Atlas housing with in total 5 RETROBLOCK GRAPHICS 2100 projectors.In addition, the World Expo train station (Estação do Oriente)featured one of BARCO’s Display Solutions.BARCO Projection Systems America3240 Town Point Drive, Kennesaw, GA 30144Tel.
