On <strong>the</strong> north-west side of <strong>the</strong> Yalgoo Sub-region, <strong>the</strong> Carnarvon Botanical <strong>District</strong> extends south <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Geraldton</strong><strong>District</strong> as <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn part of <strong>the</strong> Toolonga Plateau. This is a flat s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong> bisected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> by <strong>the</strong> MurchisonRiver. The red s<strong>and</strong>s support Bowgada shrubl<strong>and</strong> with scattered p<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> eucalypts. The Southwestern Botanical Prov<strong>in</strong>ce occupies <strong>the</strong> western side of <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong>. Its higher w<strong>in</strong>ter ra<strong>in</strong>fall supports morevaried plant communities than <strong>the</strong> Eremaean Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. To <strong>the</strong> north of Kalbarri along <strong>the</strong> coast, <strong>the</strong> Zuytdorp systemsupports wattle scrub <strong>and</strong> heath on <strong>the</strong> slopes of <strong>the</strong> high limestone cliffs fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sea. Coastal heath or Melaleucathicket grows on hills, <strong>and</strong> on deeper soils, thicket of Acacia rostellifera, sometimes with patches of scrub heath. To <strong>the</strong>east of this, north of <strong>the</strong> Murchison River, <strong>the</strong> Eurardy System has undulat<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong>s with belts of yellow s<strong>and</strong>ridges on <strong>the</strong> western side <strong>and</strong> red flatter s<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> east. Scrub heath with Act<strong>in</strong>ostrobus arenarius, Banksia sceptrum<strong>and</strong> Xylomelum angustifolium grow on <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong> ridges. Mixed scrub heath grows on <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong>. The red s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> east has Acacia-Allocasuar<strong>in</strong>a thicket. On this side of <strong>the</strong> System, <strong>the</strong> North West Coastal Highway runs throughan area of mallee with thicket towards <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn boundary of <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong>.Along <strong>the</strong> Murchison River, <strong>the</strong> gorges <strong>and</strong> valleys are cut <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Tumblagooda S<strong>and</strong>stone. Acacia acum<strong>in</strong>ata <strong>and</strong>Jacksonia cupulifera scrub occurs on <strong>the</strong> rocky areas, with Eucalyptus camaldulensis <strong>and</strong> Casuar<strong>in</strong>a obesa along <strong>the</strong>river.Along <strong>the</strong> coast south of Kalbarri, <strong>the</strong> Greenough System is associated with coastal limestone south to Dongara. Thelimestone belt varies <strong>in</strong> width <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are alluvial flats <strong>and</strong> lagoons. There are thickets of Acacia rostellifera <strong>and</strong>Melaleuca cardiophylla on rocky ridges, Acacia-Banksia scrub on s<strong>and</strong> over limestone <strong>and</strong> low forest of A. rostelliferaon alluvial flats.Much of <strong>the</strong> Kalbarri System lies with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kalbarri National Park. It is a gently undulat<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong> of deep yellows<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> bleached s<strong>and</strong> over laterite, support<strong>in</strong>g scrub heath. Outcropp<strong>in</strong>g W<strong>in</strong>dalia radiolarite forms low rocky hillswith Acacia-Melaleuca thicket <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavier soils support mallees. East of this, <strong>the</strong> less resistant rocks of <strong>the</strong> AjanaSystem have allowed more extensive erosion by <strong>the</strong> Murchison River to produce shallow rocky soil. This supportsAcacia acum<strong>in</strong>ata scrub with scattered York gum.The nor<strong>the</strong>rn part of <strong>the</strong> Yuna System lies to <strong>the</strong> east of this, runn<strong>in</strong>g south almost to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn boundary of <strong>the</strong><strong>District</strong>. Ma<strong>in</strong>ly an undulat<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> western side is yellow <strong>and</strong> loose, support<strong>in</strong>g scrub heath, <strong>and</strong>to <strong>the</strong> east with lower ra<strong>in</strong>fall becom<strong>in</strong>g red <strong>and</strong> more earthy, with Acacia-Allocasuar<strong>in</strong>a thicket. The change <strong>in</strong> soiltype is patchy, produc<strong>in</strong>g a vegetation mosaic. On deep soils east of Yuna, <strong>the</strong>re is York gum woodl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> this ispresent with salmon gum to <strong>the</strong> west of Mullewa. Where <strong>the</strong> Greenough River crosses <strong>the</strong> system, <strong>the</strong>re is Acaciaacum<strong>in</strong>ata scrub with scattered York gum <strong>in</strong> its valley. The Hutt System is made up of <strong>the</strong> lower dra<strong>in</strong>age bas<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Hutt River, south of <strong>the</strong> Kalbarri System. Dra<strong>in</strong>agechannels have cut <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> plateau, expos<strong>in</strong>g Tumblagooda S<strong>and</strong>stone with thicket <strong>and</strong> scrub heath <strong>and</strong> Kockatea Shalewith Melaleuca-Hakea thicket. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong> supports scrub heath. Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Casuar<strong>in</strong>aobesa <strong>and</strong> Melaleuca rhaphiophylla grow along <strong>the</strong> Hutt River. To <strong>the</strong> east of <strong>the</strong> Greenough System <strong>and</strong> south of <strong>the</strong> Hutt System lies <strong>the</strong> Northampton System. Here much of <strong>the</strong>plateau surface has been removed, with <strong>the</strong> remnants form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> flat-topped mesas of <strong>the</strong> Moresby Range <strong>and</strong>undulat<strong>in</strong>g country between. Scrub heath occurs on <strong>the</strong> mesa tops, Melaleuca-Hakea thicket on <strong>the</strong> steep scarp slopes<strong>and</strong> Acacia acum<strong>in</strong>ata scrub on <strong>the</strong> lower country, with Hakea <strong>and</strong> scattered Eucalyptus loxophleba. E. camaldulensisis scattered <strong>in</strong> dra<strong>in</strong>age l<strong>in</strong>es.On coastal limestone around Dongara lies <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rnmost section of <strong>the</strong> Ilyarrie System, which takes its name fromEucalyptus erythrocorys, which characteristically grows <strong>in</strong> small groves on exposed limestone. To <strong>the</strong> east of this lies<strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part of <strong>the</strong> Tathra System. Low heath covers <strong>the</strong> laterite of ridges <strong>and</strong> breakaways. Scrub heath with smallpatches of Melaleuca thicket <strong>and</strong> woodl<strong>and</strong> cover <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong> between <strong>the</strong> ridges. The south-eastern section of <strong>the</strong> South Western Botanical Prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> lies to <strong>the</strong> south-east of <strong>the</strong> YunaSystem. The Mullewa System has s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong>s similar to those fur<strong>the</strong>r west, with Acacia-Allocasuar<strong>in</strong>a-Melaleucathickets. The residual s<strong>and</strong>pla<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> P<strong>in</strong>dar System, around <strong>the</strong> headwaters of <strong>the</strong> Irw<strong>in</strong>, has been stripped on muchof <strong>the</strong> high ground, <strong>the</strong> shallow red loams over granite support<strong>in</strong>g Acacia ramulosa shrubl<strong>and</strong> on hills, A. acum<strong>in</strong>atathicket on red s<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> eucalypt woodl<strong>and</strong> on red loam <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> valleys.20
