section Six Corporate ResponsibilityWe believe that being a good corporate citizen is part of good business practiceand creates long-term value for our investors. That’s why we recently released ourfirst-ever Corporate Citizenship <strong>Report</strong>. It describes our efforts to incorporateenvironmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into our investmentpractices and into our own daily operations.In recent years, we have sharpened our focus on ESG issues associated with ourinvestments and our firm. While we’re off to a good start, there is much work todo. We are committed to building on the foundation we have established and arethoroughly integrating ESG considerations into the fabric of <strong>Carlyle</strong>.Our <strong>2010</strong> Corporate Citizenship <strong>Report</strong> provides an overview of our corporatecitizenship activities and highlights several efforts underway at our portfolio companies.Among other initiatives, the report describes:Corporate Citizenship• <strong>Carlyle</strong>’s development and integration of the Responsible Investment Guidelinesin our investment decision-making processes for controlling corporate buyoutOnePlanetOne Communitytransactions, including specific case studies, and our efforts to begin sharing theguidelines environmental with a targeted stewardshipset of portfolio companies. community volunteering• Our partnership with Environmental Defense Fund and our collaborative effort todevelop EcoValuScreen, a due diligence tool that identifies operational changes atprospective portfolio companies in an effort to improve both environmental andfinancial performance.• Our support for specific environmental initiatives at several portfolio companies,including Allison Transmission, Connecticut Service Plazas and Hertz Corporation.• <strong>Carlyle</strong>’s global One Community program, which promotes volunteerism in thecommunities in which we operate, and our efforts to promote diversity acrossthe firm.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Carlyle</strong> group 57
