Because of that, sustainable developmenthas become integral to our business in moreways than one. We are working on reducinggreenhouse gas emissions through our CleanDevelopment Mechanism initiatives. Our costefficiency drive centers around the increasinguse of alternative fuels and raw materialsthat reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, andtherefore, contributes to further reductionof carbon dioxide emission. We continueto extend our health-safety-environmentalsystems further to improve workingconditions. More importantly, we contributeto added value at our locations and are arecognized partner in the communities whereour cement plants are located.Into Our CSR InitiativesThere is a lot to be said of Indocement’sCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR)activities that are closely aligned withour business of providing quality shelter, construction materials and related servicesat competitive prices, in a way that promotessustainable development.A major breakthrough was achieved byIndocement in 2007 when it integrated theinterests of environmental conservation withalternative fuel sourcing and communitydevelopment. In partnership with Indonesia’sleading Bogor Institute of Agriculture,Indocement succeeded in cultivating a30-hectare plantation of the jatropha trees, known for their oil-rich seeds. What is significant about this development isthe fact that the plantation is located on whatused to be Indocement’s limestone quarry. Our cultivation project has turned a totallybarren land into what are now rows uponrows of green trees as far as the eye cansee. The success of this project has caughtthe attention of scientists, environmentalistsand various agencies throughout the world, drawing visitors to the site in increasingnumber. Today, there are 75,000 fully grownjatropha trees, with 90,000 additionalseedlings planted on the site. A typical treewould hold up to 100 fruits, and each fruitbears three seeds, from which burning oilcan be extracted.Indocement2007 Annual Report36
