FOUNDATION NEWSCheyenne residents giveplenty of themselvesfor the sake of educationImagine this: Laramie County Community Collegefaculty members attend a conference unveiling cuttingedgeresearch. They share this information with theircolleagues, and it is integrated into the college’s educationcurriculum. Hundreds of future educators learn newteaching strategies, and thousands of young minds areopened — thousands of lives are changed. This type of long-term, far-reaching impact is onereason that Cheyenne residents Jan and W.M. Stalcup Jr.chose the LCCC education department as the recipient of a$50,000 gift earlier this year. Matched by the state, the Janand W.M. Stalcup Jr. Dedication to Education Fund willprovide the department with thousands of dollars eachyear for academic advancement. The fund is intended to allow the educationdepartment to pursue opportunities that ordinarilyaren’t covered in its budget. The money may be usedto purchase new tools, computer technology, state-ofthe-artequipment or innovative curricula to promotecreative teaching. The Stalcups are especially interested incontinuing education for teachers and the development ofpartnerships between the college and the school districts. They also would like to see LCCC continue to bringnationally recognized speakers to Cheyenne. The Stalcups have appreciated the opportunity toserve the community since moving to Cheyenne fromsouth Florida in 1992. W.M. immediately became involvedat LCCC when the college helped him train 250 newworkers at SafeCard Services, Inc.“They did such a good job training those employees,I wanted to find a way to give back,” he said. W.M. alsoserved on the Foundation Board from 1993-2006 and waspresident in 2004 and 2005. “I’ll always be involved withLCCC in one way or another.”Jan also wasted no time in finding ways to serve.“That was the neat thing about getting to move here:What we found is that in Cheyenne, people just welcomedus with open arms to do whatever we wanted to do,” shesaid. “That was so different from Florida. We didn’t havethe opportunity there to be involved. But here, if you wantto make a difference, you can.”Their involvement continues today as she and W.M.served as co-chairs for the recently completed Children’sGarden fundraising campaign.Jan and W.M. Stalcup promote education at LCCC and in the community. If their goal is to model community involvement, theStalcups are succeeding. They recently were named the2008 Lifetime Heritage Award Recipients by the LCCCFoundation, and their commitment to the community alsohas been recognized by their family — especially theirgrown sons Cody and Gabe. Jan recalled a message left byGabe on their answering machine one morning: “Wherecould both of you be at 7:30 in the morning?” Gabe laughed,“Oh, yeah, you must be out changing the world.”5THE TALON
