Patients and visitors should wash their hands while in hospital when:
• their hands are visibly dirty;
• before eating or handling food;
• after going to the toilet;
• before feeding your baby; and
• after changing your baby’s nappy.
You should use soap and water to wash your hands if they are visibly dirty.
There is liquid soap and warm water at all sinks throughout the hospital.
Patients, visitors and staff can also use alcohol gels throughout the hospital,
as long as your hands are visibly clean. Apply one squirt to the palm of your
hands and rub them together, covering all of your hands until they are dry.
There are posters beside the sinks and on the hand gel units, which show you
the correct way to clean your hands.
Visitors should clean their hands when they arrive at the hospital or at the
entrance to the ward that they are visiting. It is likely that their hands will not
be visibly dirty so they can just use a hand gel.
