NEWS FROM THE SAH FOUNDATIONTransforming the way doctors diagnose thanksto youOur last edition of <strong>San</strong> <strong>News</strong> featured a cover story onthe critical importance of bedside ultrasound machines inallowing doctors and nurses to more efficiently diagnosepatients in the Emergency Care department of <strong>Sydney</strong><strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>.We asked for your help and thanks to your generoussupport reached our goal of $60,000 – enabling the<strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> Foundation, on the community’sbehalf to donate a Phillips Sparq machine and threeultrasound procedural ‘phantoms’ to the emergency caredepartment.“Since we took delivery, it has allowed us to double thenumber of patients we can resuscitate and treat, frominfants to the very elderly. Its remarkable image qualityhas improved our accuracy of diagnosis and overallpatient care.With my two ultrasound fellows (Drs Kimberly Pooleand Ka Mei Lo pictured) I have been able to teach moredoctors, nurses and students than ever before in bedsideultrasound.” commented Dr Justin Bowra, Director ofEmergency Medicine Training and Emergency Ultrasound,Emergency Care Unit, <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>.The Sparq is a state of the art bedside ultrasound machineand the ‘phantoms’ are re-usable ‘models’ of veins andtissue, made from durable rubber. NEWS FROM SAN FOUNDATIONChromatograph-mass SpectrometerThe SAH Foundation has provided the AustralasianResearch Institute (ARI) at <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> astate of the art gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer(GCMS) thanks to your donations.A highly valued and important piece of equipmentthe GCMS is an advanced instrument that identifiesand measures the concentration of minute amountsof chemicals, drugs, poisons and smaller biologicalmolecules.“The GCMS the SAH Foundation donated to the ARIis capable of identifying thousands of substances withincredible confidence and accuracy, and measurethe concentration of the substance with a sensitivityof better than 1 part per billion” said Dr Bevan HokinDirector of Pathology, SAH Pathology.Within the industry GCMS technology is the referencemethod used and this instrument is computer drivencontaining a ‘library’ of compounds that is used toidentify over 120,000 compounds and 4,500 drugsand poisons.“The ARI uses this technology for several analyticalfunctions including measuring the levels of omega-3fatty acids, essential for health. NEWS from adventist healthcare<strong>San</strong> 9th innational surveyof 393 hospitalsNew world standardsin cancer care thanksto clinical trialsGreat care at the <strong>San</strong> has been recognised in a patientsatisfaction survey conducted by health fund HCF.The survey results show that the <strong>San</strong> is rated by itspatients as 9th out of 393 private and public hospitalsAustralia-wide.Patients were asked if they were likely to recommendthe <strong>Hospital</strong> they visited to their friends or colleagues.The <strong>San</strong> received a ranking of 9.0.“This is a great result” said <strong>Adventist</strong> Healthcare and<strong>San</strong> Chief Executive Officer Dr Leon Clark.“It reflects the standard of care provided by <strong>San</strong> staff.”The average score for hospitals (out of 10) was;• 8.7 (nationally)• 8.6 (QLD & VIC)• 8.8 (NSW)On average the 109 public hospitals surveyedreceived 7.9 out of 10 while the 284 private hospitalssurveyed received 8.8 out of 10.8000 HCF members participated in the survey.Associate Professor Gavin Marx & the <strong>San</strong> Clinical Trials TeamClinical trial results from patients requiring bonestrengthening medication have contributed towardsglobal research that led to ‘Denosumab’ beingadministered as the new ‘standard of care’ worldwide.Clinical trials were conducted at the <strong>San</strong>’s ClinicalTrials Unit, which was established in 2005.The new standard of care gives cancer patients whoneed it a less time-consuming, less invasive method ofreceiving bone strengthening medication.Unit Manager Nina Singh and Coordinator SallyWoodhead presented two research posters at theClinical Oncological Society of Australia conferencein Brisbane. Gift of Sight really lives up to its name.”Gift of Sight team members withHerbie after his surgeryAssociate Professor Geoffrey Painter’s enthusiasmand commitment to redressing worldwide preventableblindness is inspiring.For 12 year old Philippino boy Herbie it was also lifechanging. Operated on the day of his 12th birthday,Herbie was amongst 137 poor people who had theirsight restored during a recent trip by volunteer eyedoctors and nurses to the Philippines.Including staff from Killara’s Dalcross <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>,the inaugural Gift of Sight program of HealthCareOutreach (HCO) eventuated thanks to an initial idea byPhilippino born Lita Ford who works at the <strong>San</strong> Cafeteria.Volunteers operated in the Cagayan Valley region inNorthern Luzon which has one of the highest cataractblindness rates in the country.“Blindness caused by cataracts is simply a disease ofpoverty” said Associate Professor Geoffrey Painter, anOphthalmologist, and a board member of ForesightAustralia who supported the trip.“It is preventable and avoidable. Cataracts do not causeblindness here in Australia because we have access totreatment. In the Cagayan Valley however the impact ofcataracts can be devastating as it leads to loss of sight,independence, capacity to work, social isolation andfinancial hardships.”HCO’s Nepal Women’s Health Team has alsojust returned having undertaken life changing uterineprolapse surgeries on Nepalese women as young as 16years of age.600,000 Nepalese women were identified by the UnitedNations (in 2009) as suffering from the debilitating andlife changing condition of uterine prolapse.
