The dog days of summerwill feature a movie premiere,Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, bythe award-winning filmmaker,Aviva Kempner. The movie willbe shown in Detroit for the firsttime on Wednesday, <strong>Aug</strong>ust19 at 7:30 pm in HandlemanHall and will be introducedby its creator, Aviva Kempner.Debuting last month in NewYork, the film was a “critic’s pick” of the New York Times. Inthis movie Ms. Kempner shines a spotlight on the fascinating lifeof Gertrude Berg, “the most famous woman you never heard of.”In her day, Gertrude Berg was voted the most admired woman inAmerica, after <strong>El</strong>eanor Roosevelt! She was the creator, principalwriter and star of the popular show, The Goldbergs, which was onradio for seventeen years and in 1949 moved to TV for a sevenyear run. The documentary features interviews and reminiscencesby Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actor Ed Asner,producers Norman Lear (All in the Family) and Gary DavidGoldberg (Family Ties).A pioneer in the entertainment industry, Berg was the first womanto receive a “best actress” Emmy. During an interview by RobertSiegel on All Things Considered, on National Public Radio, Ms.Kempner told him, “She was this amazing woman. Before MarthaStewart, before Oprah, here was a woman with a media empire.”The evening will include a donor receptionwith Aviva Kempner before the showing and anafterglow open to all who attend. Preceding thepremiere, on Monday, <strong>Aug</strong>ust 17, benefactorswill also be treated to a private showing of herpopular film, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, which includesa brief appearance of TBE’s beloved late Marshall Loewenstein.The two programs are being facilitated by the Prentis MemorialLibrary and the proceeds from the event will support <strong>Temple</strong><strong>Beth</strong> <strong>El</strong> and the Ciesla Foundation, an organization committed toproducing and distributing films about important Jewish figures.See the <strong>Bulletin</strong> cover for the ticket form. Dr. Lisak is also a professor of Immunology and Microbiologyfor the school and neurologist-in-chief for the Detroit Medical Center.Aaron Lowen, son of Karen & Alan Lowen, earned First Place in the Regional Competition for Skills USA Culinary Artsand, for the second year in a row, earned Second Place in the State Competition, Skills USA Culinary Arts. Aaron ispresently the executive sous chef for Cutting Edge Cuisine and Cutting Edge To Go LTD. He has been accepted to boththe culinary school of the Culinary Institute of America and the culinary program at Schoolcraft College.Marissa Lowen, daughter of Karen & Alan Lowen, has been promoted and chosen to open the new Nordstrom’s store inCincinnati, Ohio. She will be leaving the Detroit area and moving to Cincinnati.Andrew Zureick, son of Drs. Samir & Brenda Zureick, was featured in the May 28, 2009 Detroit Jewish News in an articleentitled ”Young at Art” regarding his having been awarded the Traub Music Scholarship at Andover High School and hisperformance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Andrew was pianist for the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra’s 2008-2009 season. Andy also represented Andover in WXYZ-TV “Brightest and Best”. He will attend Dartmouth in the fall.18
