JEWISH LITERACY INITIATIVE
Last year, Rabbi Syme instituted
a program of independent Jewish
study and experience. Members who
pursued this initiative, he felt, would
gain a greater sense of Jewish identity
and learning. They would receive
“credits” for a variety of study,
worship and life “experiences” including
attendance at services, Torah Study, having become
a youth or adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah, blessing the
candles and offering Kiddush on Shabbat, taking
adult education classes, and having taken a Temple
trip to Israel. Three Temple members completed
the “course” and were honored at Rosh Hashana
services, September 18. Called to the bimah and
given a crystal commemorative were Nancy Fortier,
Lois Freeman and Chuck Zamek.
CHILDREN IN PAIN
- CAN YOU HELP?
By Rabbi Daniel B. Syme
I received this heartbreaking
email a short time ago, and
hope that someone in our
Jewish Community can help
these Jewish children find a
home. Please contact Beth
Gerber in Columbus, Ohio if
you have an interest in helping
these kids. I can only imagine
their heartache and fear.
Thank you for whatever you
can do!
With hope,
Rabbi Daniel B. Syme
“There are four Jewish
children in Toledo, OH who
need a Jewish family to adopt
them. They are ages 14(m)
7(f) 5(f) and 3 month old.
The older three were adopted
by the maternal grandmother.
She died about 1½ months
ago. The baby was placed
with the county for adoption.
All four children are in the
same foster home. Thank you
for your interest.”
HOSPITAL VISITS
By Keren Alpert, Rabbinic Associate
In years past, rabbis and Temple staff could call up the local hospitals and get
the “list of the Jewish patients”. This is no longer the case. Due to HIPAA
(Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), patients’ privacy is much
more closely guarded, and hospitals are no longer permitted to give us Jewish
patient names. Now, we are only told that congregants are in the hospital when
we are informed by a family member or the patients themselves.
If a congregant is in a local hospital because of illness or a scheduled surgical
procedure, Rabbi Syme and I try to determine if a visit would be appropriate.
Not every person feels good about receiving visitors at the hospital. Certainly, the old joke is still
true: You’re never fully covered by your insurance…or your hospital gown. In the hospital setting,
people often do not feel that they look their best and they feel a bit exposed in every way: weaker,
not in their own clothes, and having to face issues of illness.
If the congregants are up for a visit, Rabbi Syme and I try to make arrangements to see them
in the hospital setting. If they are not receiving visitors and wish to receive a phone call, we try
to accommodate that wish as well. Nowadays, most congregants’ stays at the hospital are much
shorter than in years past. So, we don’t always get the information in time to make the visit.
Again, if you know of a family member going into the hospital or you yourself are, please put
calling the Temple on your to-do list, so we don’t miss each other.
Generally, when Rabbi Syme and I go to the congregant’s hospital room, we listen to their
concerns and the concerns of their family members. Their trip to the hospital is always eventful
and somewhat traumatic, and they usually appreciate retelling the story of their admission and
their treatment. Sometimes a congregant will tell us of their fears or how this hospitalization has
affected them and their family members. We try to spend enough time to listen to the congregant
and help them process what they are feeling and not so much time that they want us to leave.
If it’s okay with the congregant, we’ll often offer a short prayer, asking for G-d to bless them
with strength and courage as they face the short-term and long-term difficulties that illness can
present. We offer the prayer, not because we are G-d’s agents, but because when two Jews speak
of holy matters, G-d is present.
I hope this information has been helpful to you. Again, please remember to call the Rabbis’
Study when you or a loved one is in the hospital.
TOM JABLONSKI, MITZVAH MODEL
For more than 20 years, Tom Jablonski has served as Temple Beth El’s Executive
Director. To the many members and staff who have sought his advice or
assistance, relied on his knowledge, trusted that his door would always be open to
listen to their concerns and, yes, their complaints, it should have been no surprise
on Rosh Hashana when Rabbi Syme named him the Mitzvah Model.
“Every year,” said Rabbi Syme, ”it is our privilege to recognize a member or members of the
staff who have shown extraordinary commitment to the congregation. The person we honor this
year has touched the lives of every family in Beth El, of every member of the staff…has touched
with caring and love, every program of this congregation for decades. I need not multiply words,
but I know you will understand why we call to the bimah our Mitzvah Model of 5770, Tom
Jablonski.”
As Tom ascended the bimah, to the sustained applause of the congregation, Rabbi Syme read
the words written on the Mitzvah Model certificate. “Temple Beth El proudly recognizes Tom
Jablonski as a Mitzvah Model who has performed extraordinary acts of caring in our congregation
and community and whose life is and shall be a blessing to those in need of kindness and concern”,
adding, “for all that you have done for all that you are, we love you”.
Tom’s simple response…”Thank you for letting me serve each and every one of you to the best
of my ability.”
ONE MORE BITE OF THE APPLE: USE YOUR IRA
TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
by Miriam Imerman, Chair of Long Range Planning
Members and friends of Temple age 70-1/2 and older who would like a very simple way to
support their favorite TBE program or the general Temple endowment have until December 31
of this year to take advantage of a great opportunity. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act
of 2008 includes a renewal of the IRA rollover provisions that were first passed in 2006, and which
became very popular with charitable taxpayers and the organizations they supported. The IRA
rollover can be used to make a tax-free transfer of up to $100,000 directly from a traditional or
Roth IRA to a qualified charitable organization such as Temple Beth El. For most donors, using
the direct rollover will be much better than taking a withdrawal from an IRA, paying taxes on the
funds, and then making a donation. Here are some of the benefits of using the IRA rollover:
• If you don’t normally itemize your deductions, you can use the IRA rollover and get
the equivalent of a charitable deduction for your gift in addition to your standard
deduction.
• If you do itemize, but are close to the “ceiling” for deduction of charitable gifts (the
30% and 50% rules), you can make the IRA rollover, and avoid the ceiling, because the
rollover will act like a full charitable deduction for your gift.
• Because the charitable IRA rollover amount is never recognized as income to the taxpayer,
you may be able to avoid tax deduction reductions based on income levels (that is, the
7.5% floor on medical deductions, the 2% floor on miscellaneous itemized deductions,
etc.).
• The charitable IRA rollover may reduce the amount of your social security payments that
are subject to tax.
• It is easy to do. Just contact your plan administrator, who should have a short form for
you to complete and return, directing him/her to transfer the amount you select (up to
$100,000) directly to Temple Beth El. No muss, no fuss.
• Of course, only those individuals who are sure they will not need the funds at a later date
should consider the IRA rollover.
Please be aware that while every effort has been made in this article to provide accurate
information, it does not purport to offer legal or financial advice, and Temple friends are strongly
advised to seek competent professional counsel to handle any issues or questions that may arise.
The Chanukah Story
In 168 B.C.E., the Syrian tyrant, Antiochus Epiphanes, sent his soldiers
to Jerusalem where they desecrated the Temple and Antiochus declared
that Judaism be abolished. He offered the Jews two options: conversion
or death. Altars and idols were set up throughout Judea; the observance
of Shabbat and festivals and the practice of circumcision were outlawed.
On the 25th of Kislev in that year, the Temple was renamed for the
Greek god Zeus; pigs were sacrificed and the Torah splattered with their
blood and then burned. Thousands of Jews chose to die rather than
commit idolatry.
Slowly, a resistance movement developed, led by the Hasmoneans,
a priestly family. The family head, Mattathias, and his five sons left
Jerusalem and took up residence in Modi’in, a small town north of the
city. When Syrian soldiers appeared and commanded the inhabitants
to offer sacrifices to Zeus, Mattathias and his sons refused. Mattathias
killed one Jew who had begun to sacrifice to Zeus. His sons then turned
on the Syrians and vanquished them.
This was the turning point in the struggle. The Maccabees became
instant heroes. They fled to the hills with their followers and began
a campaign of guerrilla warfare against the Syrians. Mattathias’ son,
Judah, known as “The Hammer”, became their military leader. Furious,
Antiochus sent an army to destroy the Jews. Though outnumbered,
Judah and his soldiers won two
major battles, routing the Syrians
decisively.
By 165 B.C.E., the terror of
Antiochus had ended. The Jewish
people had regained their freedom
and retained their faith. The idols
were torn down and, on the 25th
day of Kislev, in 165 B.C.E., three years to the day after its original
defilement, the Temple was re-consecrated. In celebration, the people
marked their deliverance with an eight day festival, Feast of Lights, the
Feast of Dedication, or simply, CHANUKAH.
WHY EIGHT DAYS? According to a Talmudic legend, when the
Maccabees went to rededicate the Temple, they found only one bottle
of purified oil for the Ner Tamid, the Eternal Light, enough for just one
day. Miraculously, it burned for eight. The rabbis, therefore, attributed
the eight days of CHANUKAH to the miracle of the oil. The books of
the Maccabees, however, makes no mention of the legend of the oil and
it is believed the eight day holiday was originally meant to parallel the
eight days of Sukkot which the Maccabees could not observe while in
hiding in the Judean hills.
Lighting The Chanukah Candles
The lighting of the Menorah (Chanukiah) is the central Chanukah ritual. Candles
are arranged in the menorah from right to left; we begin with one candle plus
the Shamash on the first night, then add an additional candle each successive
night, ending with eight. Candles are lit, however, from left to right, the newest
one first. The Shamash, which occupies a higher place than the other candles,
is lit first and used to light the rest. On Friday night, the Chanukah candles are
lit before the Shabbat candles. It is customary to place the lighted menorah
in a window so passers-by can see the lights from the street, thus fulfilling the
mitzvah of proclaiming the light.
This year, we light the first candle Friday evening, December 11, and recite the
following two blessings:
Ba-ruch A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ha-o-lam a-sher kid-sha-nu
b-mitz-vo-tav v-tzi-va-nu l-had-lik ner shel Cha-nu-kah.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who makes us holy
with mitzvot, and who commands us to kindle the lights of Chanukah.
Ba-ruch A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ha-o-lam she-a-sa nis-sim la-avo-tei-nu
ba-ya-min ha-heym ba-z’-man ha-zeh.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who performed
wondrous deeds for our ancestors in day of old, at this season.
On the first night ONLY, the following prayer is added:
Ba-ruch A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ha-o-lam she-he-che-ya-nu
v’-ki-y’-ma-nu v’-hi-gi-ya-nu la-z’man ha-zeh.
Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, ruler of the universe, for giving us life, for
sustaining us and for enabling us to celebrate this joyous season.
On Friday night,
the Chanukah
candles are
lit before the
Shabbat candles.
Did You Know?
Chanukah is the only significant Jewish holiday not mentioned
in the Bible. It is recorded in the First and Second Book of the
Maccabees which are part of the Apocrypha, books written by
Jews, but not part of the biblical canon. Chanukah was first
celebrated as a military victory. The legend of the oil came later. In
Israel, today, the emphasis, once more, is on victory and national
courage and not the miracle of the oil.
The word, “Dreidel”, is a derivative of the German word “top”
and the game an adaptation of an old German gambling game.
Chanukah was one of the few times of the year when rabbis
permitted games of chance.
Why we eat latkes on Chanukah...A common explanation is
because they are cooked in oil, reminding us of the miracle of the
single cruse. The eating of latkes may have grown out of a custom
of eating dairy foods on Chanukah, possibly because the main
potato crop became available at that time of year.
In Israel, sufganiyot (jelly donuts) are the treats associated with
Chanukah. These, too, are cooked in oil.
The root of the word education, chinuch, is related to the word
Chanukah, which means re-dedication. Thus, Chanukah is an
appropriate time to give to Jewish educational charities. Many
families dedicate one night of Chanukah to giving monetary gifts
of tzedakah and doing acts of g’milut chasadim in lieu of receiving
gifts.
MITZVAH MEALS FOR THOSE IN NEED
by Rabbi Daniel B. Syme
This is month six of our partnership with Hiller’s Market, offering Mitzvah Meals to
those in need in the Jewish community. Since its inception, more than 300 families
have benefited from the program.
Valued at $50 retail, each box of food costs those in need $30, thanks to Jim Hiller’s
generous elimination of his profit. Each box contains five meals to feed a family of
four. The meals are not kosher, but contain no pork products or shellfish. Paul Wertz
of Excellence Too Catering creates the monthly menu.
For some families, even $30 may be an impossibility. We are able to assist them,
thanks to the generosity of our many donors whose names appear on the Tribute pages
of the Bulletin. We are grateful to them and invite any who are able to consider a gift
to the Temple Beth El Mitzvah Meals Fund to benefit those in need.
November orders will be accepted through Monday, November 16. Each order must
be accompanied by a $30 check. Orders will be capped at the first 150 requests. Orders
received after November 16, or after the first 150 orders have been placed, will be
applied to the December pickup. The November orders placed with will be delivered
November starts off with a huge weekend! The Harold & Ellin Lawson
Youth Institute is November 6 – 8, and is set to be an amazing weekend!
As this is the Bar Mitzvah of the Lawson Institute, (the 13 th year!) the
weekend revolves around “Growing Up The Mitzvah Way”. Our 7 th –
12 th Graders will perform mitzvot throughout the weekend for various
organizations, enjoy the out-of-doors (yes, warm clothes are needed!) and
end with a formal dinner and party celebration! This is definitely not one
you want to miss!
In October, our Young People’s Society (YPS), enjoyed dinner and a movie in Benton’s
Place, taking a nice break from homework to enjoy a relaxing evening of friends and food.
With the fall chill closing in, YPS also met in Pontiac for dinner at the Blue Note Café, and
waited anxiously to descend into Erebus, a four story haunted house that thrilled, chilled and
created a screaming good time for everyone!
Our Junior Young People’s Society (JYPS) had welcome guests to Benton’s Place! Chinchilla,
birds, snakes, spiders, alligators and more joined us for an eye opening look (and touch!) on
our “Creature Feature” evening.
We look forward to the months to come as our friendships grow and our Youth Groups
SOMETHING NEW AT SERVICES THIS YEAR
by Arlene Keller, Religious School Principal
For many years, the two High Holy Day
services for the younger and older children
were held at the same time. I remember that,
as own two daughters were growing up, my
husband and I would alternate as to who
would take which child to the children’s
service and who would take the other to the
youth service until they were of age to be at
the same service.
To eliminate the issue for parents this
year, services for the two age groups were held at different times;
the “little kids” service” at 1:30 pm and “the big kids“ or youth
service at 2:15 pm. This gave parents a few different options. If a
family had children in different age groups, they could bring the
whole family to whichever service they chose or to both. The best
part was that families didn’t have to split up.
Having separate services means that all the staff can be at both
as well. Rabbi Syme and Cantor Kalmowitz were traditionally at
the children’s service; this year they were able to be a part of the
youth service too.
Another change that happened this year was that both services
took place in Handleman Hall. Even though the Sanctuary is
awe inspiring and majestic for the younger set, the decision to use
Handleman Hall this year made the service more intimate and
family friendly. All the children came and sat on floor to hear the
story Keren Alpert told. In Handleman Hall, there was no problem
having the children up close and personal as the three Torahs were
carried around the room. There was no shortage of children who
brought their own shofars (many purchased at the Sisterhood Gift
Shop) and blew them along with Cantor Kalmowitz The third to
sixth grader’s service was much the same as it had been in the past,
but with the addition of Rabbi Syme and Cantor Kalmowitz.
Whatever service you and your family attended, I truly hope
that you felt the meaning of the High Holidays and a close
connection with Temple Beth El.
COUNTING OUR
BLESSINGS
By Marlene Thav, Director of Early
Childhood Education
November is typically a wonderful time
in nursery school. Not only is it a time
to count our blessings, it is also a time
of real growth in our children. It’s
usually around this time of year that our
students have adjusted to the routine
of school. They have stopped crying at
the door when good-byes are necessary.
They have learned to trust their new
friends and their new surroundings.
They now start to direct all of that
emotional energy into learning social
skills, like sharing, following directions,
asking for help as well as shapes, colors,
numbers and letters.
Of course, having fun is critical to
learning. Whenever the weather permits,
the children love to play outdoors on
the playground or inside in the gym.
This month, we will spend a great deal
of time learning about Thanksgiving,
reading stories, singing fun “turkey”
songs, and making Thanksgiving art
projects. On the Wednesday before
Thanksgiving, we will have a “Pizza
Thankgiving” party. Everyone eats pizza
for our school feast and turkey cookies
that they make themselves. We sing the
Motzi and enjoy the many blessings we
see before us. Just watching the children
enjoy the party is a blessing for our staff,
but the best blessing is knowing that the
children have arrived at a special moment.
I’ve always said a silent Shecheheyanu,
thanking G-d for our wonderful Temple
and our growing school.
I hope you can count your blessings as
well this month and enjoy a healthy and
happy holiday with your friends and
family!
A SUPER EVENING IN THE SUKKAH
By Renee Jablonski, Social Action Chair
Our October 6 Sukkah program was terrific. Betty Schare and Tom Jablonski were quite a hit. The evening was both
informative and entertaining…just ask Harmon Tron and the Jewish War Veteran contingent who attended along with Temple
members. Our thanks to the Ambassadors who provided refreshments and our thanks to all who attended.
Chance meetings sometimes lead to lifetime friendships. So it was with Rabbi Syme and the late Mary Travers of Peter,
Paul and Mary. As he said in the eulogy her family requested he deliver, he loved Mary Travers as “a cherished friend,
asked by the family to participate in a memorial service for Mary Travers in New York, November 9.
by Ariel Sabar. Sabar grew up in California, the son of a professor
of Hebrew at UCLA who had grown up in an ancient village in
northern Iraq where the native language was still Aramaic. The
birth of his own son causes Ariel Sabar to explore his father’s and
his own background. This discussion will be facilitated by Susan
Chalom, professor of English at Wayne State University. There is
a fee of $30 for the series, $25 for members of The Friends of the
THE RUTH FRANKLIN EINSTEIN
EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FUND
Anita Naftaly Family
Circle Conference
The Ruth Franklin Einstein Education Assistance Fund, named in
memory of the oldest of Rabbi Leo M. Franklin’s daughters, continues to
be a mainstay in the Jewish community as it provides interest-free loans
to Jewish college students in the metro Detroit area. The Fund is part
of the consortium known as JELS, Jewish Education Loan Service, which
disburses hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest-free loans each year.
These loans help Jewish young adults, including Beth El students, pursue
their undergraduate and graduate or professional degrees.
As you know, Michigan institutions of higher learning have steeply
increased tuition. Many students are forced to supplement any scholarships
or PELL grants they may have received with expensive interest-bearing
loans.. Monies from the Einstein Fund help these students to alleviate the
burden of repaying expensive loans.
The Einstein Fund is able to make these loans because of your donations
to the fund and the excellent and timely repayments by loan recipients.
We encourage you to consider the Einstein Fund when honoring or
remembering friends and family.
temple archives
Jan Durecki, Archivist
On September 16, the Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archives, with
the support of the Honorable Walter Shapero, hosted the Mary
Einstein Shapero Memorial Lecture. The attendees represented
a cross-section of the community-at-large. Academics, authors,
historians, and representatives from Civil War study groups were
all eager to listen to the esteemed lecturer and nationally renowned
historian Harold Holzer. More than 500 people were enthralled
by his remarks on President Lincoln and his Jewish acquaintances.
Holzer spoke of the President’s religiosity and debunked a current
internet rumor that Lincoln was of Jewish heritage. He also spoke
of Lincoln’s “finest hour” during which the President rescinded
Ulysses S. Grant’s General Order No. 11 in which all Jews were
expelled from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Holzer’s
appearance marked his first visit to Michigan in 25 years. He
was more than impressed with the warm welcome he received
from the Temple Beth El’s clergy and members. The evening was
capped off by a delightful dessert reception that was sponsored
by three “Archives Angels”: Carolyn Ash, Beverly Canvasser, and
Joan Jampel.
Standing at the top of my “thank you” list are Judge Shapero
and his family. Their generous support made the evening possible.
I would like to thank Wendy Bice and the wonderful Archives
Committee for their assistance in organizing this event. July
Martens, Joan Schott, and Marlene Lipman also helped out at
the registration table, and Temple librarian Eileen Polk put down
her books and documented the event in photographs. I am also
L. to R. Harold Holzer, Wendy Bice, Chair – Archives Committee, Jan
Durecki, Archivist, and the Honorable Walter Shapero.
thankful to the Maintenance Staff that coped with seating the large
crowd, and Tom Jablonski whose good humor was appreciated
as the audience grew and grew. The program’s success was also
attributable to Barbara Grant and Marie Curtis who developed its
eye-catching layout in the Bulletin. Marie also added the design
to the Temple’s web page. Last, but not least, my thanks to Mark
Docks who patiently organized the printing, labeling and mailing
of almost 3,000 postcards.
The Jewish
Michigan in the
Civil War
On November 11, the Archives will
present the last installment of the
Miller – Bearman Jewish History
Detectives Lecture Series for 2009.
At that time I will present The
Jewish Soldier From Michigan
in the Civil War. The lecture will
revisit Irving Katz’s classic work of
the same name, published in 1961,
on the War Between the States.
Bob Zaetta, a Civil War re-enactor
and member of the 24 th Michigan
Volunteer Infantry, has graciously
volunteered to greet attendees
in costume with his musket and
bayonet in hand. Everyone is
welcome and there is no charge.
However reservations are requested
at 248-865-0628.
the recipient of a gift of
$165 from the Tzedakah
It was given in support of the
good work that the Archives
does in documenting the
history of Temple Beth El
