installation remarksPRESIDENT JIM DEUTCHMANJUNE 25, 2009I promised to give part of my Presidentialaddress in Rap. Accordingly, I will do thatnow:It is with great delight that I deliver thisaddress in RAP, the only rap I know. Itis obviously, the rap of our people. I amhonored to report that our congregationhas sustained itself during these troubledtimes. It has been done by the intensivework by our people. This includes theentire Minyan of Temple employees,Senior Staff (I will characterize them as the Temple Team) andall of us volunteers.The Rap portion is now over.We have been successful in our efforts to operate our congregationwithin the financial limits of our revenues. We have been assistedin our revenues by two very significant factors:1. The Annual Appeal which raised over $130,0002. The Investment Committee which wisely adjusted ourinvestments to a less risk oriented policy, prior to the debacleon Wall Street.The results of the Investment Committee work preserved ourinvestment assets and assured us of a relatively consistent returnduring the financial down-turn. Obviously, the Annual Appealprovided a new revenue source to cushion our budget. The effortsof our belt tightening have been significant and somewhat painful;however, we have preserved most jobs and continue to provideour much needed services to our members and community.The education programs have become the bright light within ourcommunity and the nursery school has become a great source fornew members for our congregation. Our music department hasshone within the budget limitations and continues to bring usa rich and varied portion of inspiration within and out of ourreligious services.Our catering committee has been innovative and leading us intonew arenas. It should be noted that our Caterer, Paul Wertz, hasbecome a Kosher Caterer. He maintains his kosher kitchen atCongregation Beth Ahm allowing us to additionally offer koshercatered events at Temple.Our building & facilities committee has been vigorously workingon completing the work to quantify the renovations necessary forour building to achieve energy efficient operations (the greeningof the Temple). I identify the greening of the Temple to havetwo meanings:1. The energy efficient operations of the facilities2. The money saving effects that energy efficiency will yield toour budget.The Ways & Means Committee has been doing yeoman’s workin setting the budget controls and supervising their compliance.The committee has been at times referred to as an offshoot of theGermany’s National Socialist Party.We have been active and effective in serving our wider communitythrough our Social Action Committee. They have done so manythings that I will name just a couple:1. Easter Candy Baskets for a Detroit Elementary School &Greater New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church2. Mitzvah Meals program3. Collecting food, clothing and other necessities for those inneed in our communityOur auxiliaries are ever active in providing service and a connectionwithin our greater Temple family. They include the Sisterhood,Brotherhood, Ambassadors, Adventurers, Next Gen, YoungPeoples Society and of course The Usher Corps…Sempre Fi!Finally, I again mention one of the most moving groups in ourcongregation: The Braille Bindery and its production of readingmaterials for the blind. This program operates weekly bothtranscribing books and assembling and shipping them to thosewho need this service. It has been staffed by volunteers for nearlyfive decades and headed by Ilene Sawyer.Allow me to Perorate:We do good things at Temple Beth El and we will continue to dothese things and more as we adjust to our ever changing societyand demographics. temple newsHILLER’S MARKETS & TEMPLE BETH EL -PARTNERS FOR MITZVAH MEALSby Rabbi Daniel B. SymeWe are now entering our third month of our partnership with Hiller’s Market, offeringMitzvah Meals to those in need in the Jewish community. The program, which offersa box of high-quality groceries at a substantial discount, is a Jewish version of the verysuccessful program Hiller’s first launched in March with Ward Evangelical PresbyterianChurch in Northville. Anyone in our Temple community or the Jewish communityat-large may apply, whether they themselves are in need or someone they know and careabout might welcome the assistance. In July, 66 families benefited from the program.Each box of food costs $30; in the store, these items would retail for approximately$50. Jim Hiller has generously reduced the price by not taking a profit on these items.Each box contains five meals to feed a family of four. These meals are not kosher, butcontain no pork products or shellfish. Paul Wertz of Excellence Too Catering has createdmonthly menus.August orders will be accepted through Monday, August 17. Each order must beaccompanied by a $30 check. Orders will be capped at the first 150 requests. Ordersreceived after August 17, or after the first 150 orders have been placed, will be appliedto the September pickup. The August orders will be placed with Hiller’s on August17and delivered to Beth El by Temple member, Judy Roberts on Monday, August 24for assembly by Temple volunteers. Orders may be picked up at Temple Tuesday,August 25 at 3 pm or Wednesday, August 26 between 10 am and Noon.We are living in very tough times – economic circumstances that many of us have neverexperienced. So many people feel the pain of this bad economy. They’ve lost jobs andseen the simple costs of living rise exponentially. They were troubled withliquidating the large cash & fixedincome investments and re-deployingthem into the equity markets. It wasthis hesitation and studied concernthat saved our investments from thedevastation the markets wrought. Weare stronger and better able to takeconsidered action with the investmentasset policy, forged under his watch.(It should be noted we now haveadded the word “eleemosynary” toour vocabulary.) Stewart Frank, wepresent you the President’s Cup.Temple Beth El’s revenues had beenstagnant and balancing its budgetwith expense cuts yielded limitedresults. New thinking was required.We needed to create a program to‘Bridge the Gap’ between the expensesand the revenues. This concept wasunique in our history and novel inattempting to balance the burden ofcarrying on our programs withoutspending ourselves into deficit &debt.
