Remember, your goal is to get local press coverage and<strong>team</strong>s must show evidence <strong>of</strong> any media footage or press clipp<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> order to be awarded marksfor such media coverage generated.ELECTING YOUR <strong>F1</strong> IN <strong>SCHOOLS</strong> MARKETING MANAGEROnce you have elected your Market<strong>in</strong>g and Communications Manager, you should email <strong>the</strong> ICS(Gillian@ics.ie) to let us know. News desks get lots <strong>of</strong> e-mails everyday so <strong>the</strong>y may not have seen your press release yet andmay ask you to resend it. If so, check that you have <strong>the</strong> right e-mail address and say: “I‟ll resend itto you (state <strong>the</strong> day or time you feel you will be able to e-mail <strong>the</strong> release to <strong>the</strong>m – immediatelyif possible – <strong>the</strong> sooner <strong>the</strong> better while your call is fresh <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds) and if you need to<strong>in</strong>terview anyone or would like to send out a photographer, please call us.”You could follow this up with a call <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day to see if <strong>the</strong>y received it. It is important youget to talk to everyone on <strong>the</strong> list. You should e-mail yourcontact list whenever you have reached ano<strong>the</strong>r stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project because <strong>the</strong> papers/stationsmight be <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> photograph<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g your <strong>team</strong> (e.g. when you enter <strong>the</strong>competition, when you get through <strong>the</strong> Qualify<strong>in</strong>g Stage, when you get your car milled, etc). <strong>For</strong>this purpose, we have attached two fur<strong>the</strong>r sample press releases. <strong>The</strong>se cover <strong>the</strong> mill<strong>in</strong>g stageand run-up to <strong>the</strong> regional f<strong>in</strong>als.Newspapers love to give space to good visual projects so th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> ways to make an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>gshot for your own or visit<strong>in</strong>g photographers. Th<strong>in</strong>k about <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> photo, possiblebackgrounds, as well as how <strong>the</strong> group present <strong>the</strong>mselves i.e. dressed as <strong>For</strong>mula 1 drivers orpit stop workers! Props such as a chequer flag or crash helmet could be used. Maybe someoneon your <strong>team</strong> is a keen photographer so <strong>the</strong>y could take <strong>the</strong> photo and send it <strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> press –however, check with <strong>the</strong> contact first about <strong>the</strong> format and size <strong>of</strong> shot <strong>the</strong>y will need. You mightalso consider tak<strong>in</strong>g some screen shots <strong>of</strong> how your design looks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer-Aided Design(CAD) s<strong>of</strong>tware.So remember:1. Follow up press release with phone calls <strong>the</strong> day after it is sent.2. Be sure to contact everyone on <strong>the</strong> list <strong>in</strong> order to get a positive from <strong>the</strong> paper/station.3.
