Special LectureMonday, May 3, 2010, 1:15 PM - 4:15 PM • East BallroomIrvine Page Award LectureDonald Heistad, MDDr. Donald Heistad is Zahn Professorof Cardiology and Professor of InternalMedicine and Pharmacology at theUniversity of Iowa Carver College ofMedicine. He is Deputy Director of theCardiovascular Center.Dr. Heistad was born in Chicago, andreceived his MD from the University ofChicago. He has received internationalrecognition for his studies of hypertension,atherosclerosis, and the cerebral circulation.His research has resulted in almost500 original papers and reviews.Dr. Heistad’s research has built the foundation for understanding cerebrovascularadaptive mechanisms and consequences of hypertension.The studies have demonstrated structural changes and endothelialdysfunction in the cerebral circulation during hypertension. His recentstudies have clarified mechanisms by which hypertension leads to intracerebralhemorrhage.Dr. Heistad has received several major research awards, including theResearch Achievement Award of the American Heart Association, theHarry Goldblatt Award and Novartis Award from the Council for HighBlood Pressure Research of the AHA, the Irving S. Wright Award of theStroke Council of the AHA, the Merck International Award of the InternationalSociety of Hypertension, Distinguished Alumni Award from theUniversity of Chicago, the Carl J. Wiggers Award of the American PhysiologicalSociety, and the Eugene M. Landis Award of the MicrocirculatorySociety. He is a member of the Association of American Physicians andthe American Society for Clinical Investigation.Dr. Heistad has given numerous named national and internationallectures, including the Abbott Lecture of the American Society of Hypertension.He is recognized internationally as a leading cardiovascularinvestigator and mentor for biomedical scientists.31
