Page 16 Western Wood 2006 marked the return of perfect weather (raise your hand if you remember last year.....) to the annual "Crossing Of Chris Crafts" at Obexer's Marina, as we celebrated the beginning of Summer, and the official start of the lake Tahoe boating season ! 35 gleaming antique and classic boats were on display, and 120 ACBS members were on hand to enjoy this special event and venue. Once again, or sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to Sarah Fields and the hardworking staff at Obexer's Marina, for providing the perfect location for us to gather and celebrate the day, and we were pleased that Keith and Sarah could be there to enjoy the day with us. Members attending included Mark Jordan and Laurie McCarty in 'Say When", Trent and Karen Pridemore in the newly refurbished "Lahontan", Bob and Ellen Swensen in "Tucker", Dave and Laura Nelsen in "Tuppence", and the Bush Family arriving in "Mr President" "Chris Craft for a day" attendees included Roy Dryer in "Friva", the Jeff Peterson family in the beautiful "Steinway", Wes and Patti Ball in "Destiny", and Jim and Bernadette Sweeney in "Little Bear". Kudos to Harbor Master Chuck Kelley for getting everyone safely into their slips. Special thanks goes out once again this year to Steve Lapkin & the cast and crew of H2oMark Productions for once again providing a wonderful array of morning snacks plus the always popular champagne & orange juice for everyone to enjoy. Additional recognition goes to Labrador Sam for helping me wash down the boat....... My daughter Hannah's favorite part was the wonderful home-made ice-cream provided by the Lake Tahoe Maritime Museum, who were also on hand to give rides in "Miss Tahoe" and signup new members. Once again lunch was the highlight of the day, as we enjoyed a wonderful sit-down BBQ lunch in the historic barn at Obexer's, catered by Carina's of South Shore. The grilled chicken and tri-tip was excellent, and by 1:00pm there wasn't much left on the buffet table save for a few chocolate brownies, and Rich Fisher soon made off with those. Many thanks to Roy Dryer who arranged for the wine to be donated by Ironstone Vineyards, and to Tammi Lyon for the table centerpieces. Our tradition of presenting the very informal but highly prestegious "Best Chris Craft Of Show" award continued this year. Honorable mention went to both "lolipop", owned by Steve and Cheryl Caplin, and to "Quiver", owned and restored by Ralph and Bonnie Wallen. Top honors went to "Good Grief", a beautilful 1939 19' Barrelstern Custom runabout, owned by Mike and Kathy Scroggie, and the "Best Boat Bar Of Show" recognition went to Larry Walter, for his outstanding personal handywork on "Victory", a 1947 Chris Craft U-22, fresh from Larry's shop. Special thanks to everyone who signed up for this event and made our first boat show of the 2006 season a whole lotta fun! (pictures on Page 10)
