R. JEFFREYS IN SUPPORT OFMOTION FOR PAYMENT OF COSTS.I, FRANK RUPERT JEFFREYS of Auckland PresbyterianMinister a Probation Offi cer at Auckland make oath and say asfollows:-1. THAT attached hereto and marked with the letter ‘A’ is a copyof the will of Mary Gobbe (sometimes called “Gobbie”) deceasedand I am the person named therein as guardian of the threeinfant children of the said Mary Gobbe.2. THAT the said Mary Gobbe was the wife of Joseph Gobbe(also sometimes called :Gobbie) a seaman formerly in theemployment of the Northern Steam Ship Company Ltd.3. THAT the said Mary Gobbe died at Auckland on or aboutthe 20 th November 1918 and that I was well acquainted with thedeceased in her lifetime.4. THAT the said Joseph Gobbe was drowned in the wreck of the

Schooner “Te Teko” on Slipper Island near Whakatane on the 6 thof August 1920.5 THAT I am informed verily believe that for some years prior toand at the time of her death the said Mary Gobbie was entitledto the legal custody of the infant children of the said Mary Gobbeand Joseph Gobbe by virtue of a Separation Order for custody ofchildren.6. THAT I am informed and verily believe that the said JosephGobbe and Mary Gobbe had three children whose names andages are as follows:-(a) Dorothy Hazel Gobbe born the 27 th May 1902(b) Phyllis May Gobbe born on the 26 th January 1905( c ) Desmond Lauchlan Gobbe born on the 14 th January 1907And that I know the said children, one of whom namely DesmondLauchlan was for some time maintained by me in an Orphanageat Ponsonby and the other two of whom were maintained forsome time by their Aunt Mrs. Jessie Wilkin of Onehunga MarriedWoman.7. THAT after the death of the said Joseph Gobbe I instructed Mr.R.G. Sellar of the fi rm of Messieurs Sellar Grey and Delamore,Barristers and Solicitors Auckland :(a) To attend at the Nautical inquiry into the loss of the Te Teko towatch the proceedings on behalf of the three said children.(b) To take all necessary steps in and about the recovery ofcompensation from the Northern Steam Ship Co. Ltd. Theemployers of the said Joseph Gobbe deceased.8 THAT the said R.G. Sellar duly carried out my instructionsand as a result thereof the sum of 500 pounds being thefull compensation moneys payable on death were recoveredfrom the Northern Steam Ship Co Ltd. And were duly paid intothe hands of the Public Trustee at Auckland in the month ofDecember 1920 to be held by him on behalf of the three saidchildren.9 THAT I have perused the Bills of Costs of the said fi rm ofMessieurs Sellar Grey and Delmore amounting to 20 pounds, 5shillings which are in accordance with my instructions and I aminformed and verily believe that neither the said Joseph Gobbenor the said Mary Gobbe left any estate whatever out of whichthe said costs could be paid and that no Probate or Letters ofAdministration have been taken out in either estate.SWORN at Auckland this 24 th day of June 1921 etc. etc……

DRAGGED BY HORSEFOOT CAUGHT IN ROPEELDERLY MAN KILLED. Injuries from which he died in the Whakatane Public Hospitalwere suffered by Mr. J. Gobbie, aged about 60 years, a wellknownsettler, of Awakeri, when he was dragged at the end ofa rope over wattle stumps and barbed-wire by a young horse,states the Whakatane correspondent of the “New ZealandHerald.” The accident was witnessed by neighbours.Mr. Gobbie was training the animal, which was trailing a longrope from its neck. Apparently he went to pat the horse andhis ankle became entangled in the rope. The horse boltedand dragged him for over half a mile. The rope had- workedloose when neighbours reached Mr Gobbie. who was thenunconscious.A doctor and a constable were summoned from Whakatane andMr. Gobbie was brought to the hospital on a lorry, but he diedwithout regaining consciousness.A letter of appreciation of the work of the Wellington Fire Brigadeat the recent fi re in Aulsebrook’s Building. Wakefi eld Street,was received by the Fire Board today from the manager of thecompany (Mr. E. R. Render).
