DRAGGED BY HORSEFOOT CAUGHT IN ROPEELDERLY MAN KILLED. Injuries from which he died in the Whakatane Public Hospitalwere suffered by Mr. J. Gobbie, aged about 60 years, a wellknownsettler, of Awakeri, when he was dragged at the end ofa rope over wattle stumps and barbed-wire by a young horse,states the Whakatane correspondent of the “New ZealandHerald.” The accident was witnessed by neighbours.Mr. Gobbie was training the animal, which was trailing a longrope from its neck. Apparently he went to pat the horse andhis ankle became entangled in the rope. The horse boltedand dragged him for over half a mile. The rope had- workedloose when neighbours reached Mr Gobbie. who was thenunconscious.A doctor and a constable were summoned from Whakatane andMr. Gobbie was brought to the hospital on a lorry, but he diedwithout regaining consciousness.A letter of appreciation of the work of the Wellington Fire Brigadeat the recent fi re in Aulsebrook’s Building. Wakefi eld Street,was received by the Fire Board today from the manager of thecompany (Mr. E. R. Render). Particular reference was made byMr. Render to the use” of tarpaulins in saving stock on fl oorsother than that on which the fi re occurred.Productions with John Gobbe and WifeGore 18 Aug 1881
