Ourprofessors help students hone their skills in publicspeaking, critical thinking, writing for a variety ofaudiences, and interpersonal and interculturalcommunication. These are consistently ranked inthe top skills that employers are looking for in theiremployees, no matter what the actual “job title” is.How do I know if this major’s for me?A good communication major realizes that there isalways more to learn. They should be excited aboutbeing challenged in the classroom. There is a myththat all communication majors are outgoing and talkative.The truth is that this degree is about so muchmore than just public speaking. It’s about effectivelywriting, speaking and/or communicatingbased on the situation at hand — andbeing able to adapt your response accordingly.Majors should be analytical,detail-oriented and persistent.What about faith?The field of communication desperatelyneeds people who have a spiritualcompass. The way information isobtained and presented needs to bedriven by communicators who havea strong moral and ethical background. Becausecommunicators are often the front-line response,they can make or break a situation. They canmaintain credibility for their organization or tear itdown.
