Bythe numbers, we have 15,413 living <strong>alumni</strong>, 13,932 good addresses and7,810 national, active contact records.Recently, the Advancement Office sponsored Alumni Focus Groups toreview our current efforts and to rejuvenate the <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> AlumniAssociation. Through the years, the organization has lost some <strong>of</strong> itsrelevancy among our constituents. A concerted effort is now underway tojump-start and revitalize the organization.Continued on pg.7Over the course <strong>of</strong> three evenings, more than50 alums participated in the Alumni FocusGroups to help strengthen and broaden ourAlumni Relations efforts. While the meetingswere held at <strong>Marian</strong>, their reach was nationalas alums across the country also participatedvia teleconferencing.Topics covered included Off-Site Networking,Alumni Association, Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame RecognitionDinner, Fund Development and Publications.Two meetings were held to discuss these areas.A core group then met to go over each group’stop priorities to determine the main objectivesas we move forward.A final report will be published in June with acopy in the fall issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marian</strong> Matters.A preview <strong>of</strong> the findings had a central theme;<strong>alumni</strong> want more opportunities to becomeengaged. To expand on this, the groupbelieved a stronger, more vibrant, working<strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> Alumni Association is key.In addition, utilizing technology and socialmedia is a top priority as well as invitingrepresentative assistance from each class yearand affinity groups.GRADUATION 2010Educating students in the Dominican tradition <strong>of</strong> study, prayer,community and preaching, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President,along with the faculty and staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>,proudly announce the graduation <strong>of</strong> the Class <strong>of</strong> 2010. During theMay 17th ceremony, diplomas were awarded by Sister Kathleen AnneTait, O.P., Principal, to 335 “Scholars with a Soul” who collectivelyearned more than $16 million in college scholarships. MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF DIRECTORSThe transition from an Advisory Board to a Board <strong>of</strong> Directors at <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> continues to move smoothlythrough the two-year pilot program that began in September <strong>of</strong> 2009 and will be completed in June <strong>of</strong> 2011. Committee chairshave been working in close communication with employees <strong>of</strong> the school who are directors <strong>of</strong> major departments. During this mostrecent quarter <strong>of</strong> the school year, the Finance Committee and the Facilities Committee worked with school personnel to addresssignificant building repairs and improvements that are being prioritized within the framework <strong>of</strong> a balanced budget. Any questions orconcerns about <strong>Marian</strong> Matters should be directed toGail Young.EMAIL REUNION SPARKS FORT MYERSALUMNI & FRIENDS GATHERINGGenerally speaking, in most issues <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marian</strong> Matters, you wouldfind an Alumni Pr<strong>of</strong>ile, chronicling the journey <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the 15,000plus graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Pr<strong>of</strong>iles have includedstories about pr<strong>of</strong>essional successes, philanthropic and service missions,and stories <strong>of</strong> faith overcoming adversity.This time, though, not so much an <strong>alumni</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile, but morean invitation.Patricia (Macready) Wiggenhorn ’63 and Patricia (Pignotti)Knepler ’63 have reconnected as a result <strong>of</strong> the grassroots “emailreunion” outreach undertaken by the class <strong>of</strong> ’63 prior to theFounding Four reunion in September 2008. Dozens <strong>of</strong> updates andreconnections continue to occur as a result <strong>of</strong> this effort. Kneplerparticipated in the email reunion and that’s how Wiggenhorn learned<strong>of</strong> their common ground in Fort Myers, Florida.Both “Pats” were active high school students, with Wiggenhornas editor <strong>of</strong> the Megaphone and assistant editor <strong>of</strong> the Mariner alongwith performing in theater productions, and Knepler brilliant in mathclasses and entirely selfless in her service to others in Student Council,National Honor Society, and Sodality.After graduation, each embarked on their adult paths, botheventually marrying dynamic, corporate-types, resulting in multiplemoves across the country, building high-powered careers themselves –and raising sons (two for Knepler; one for Wiggenhorn). Wiggenhorn, aformer Motorola communications executive, is now an executive coachand co-owner, with her husband, Bill, <strong>of</strong> Main Captiva, LLC, whichdesigns customized corporate leadership development programs globally.Knepler has retired from years as a college mathematics instructor, and isnow extremely active in her parish and her community.The “Pats” re-met in January <strong>of</strong> 2010, and have since discovered alifetime <strong>of</strong> coincidences that have renewed and solidified their relationshipafter all these years. MARIAN CATHOLICLEADERSHIP PROGRAMThe overwhelming success <strong>of</strong> the soon-to-becopyrighted <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> Leadership Programhas produced a second graduating class who hascompleted the four-year sequential, faith-basedprogram. Through the combined efforts <strong>of</strong> theexternal Leadership Council, Faculty Leadership Team,faculty facilitators, and student leaders, the LeadershipProgram has seen tremendous growth in positiveobjectives and outcomes.“Some great leaders have been borne from theprogram,” said Bobby Lambert, Director <strong>of</strong> theLeadership Program, at a meeting <strong>of</strong> the LeadershipCouncil earlier this year. “This is especially true inclassroom settings where lessons are taught by peers,”he said.Evidenced by the naming <strong>of</strong> two HIRE Awardrecipients this year, the <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> LeadershipProgram is not only building on success, but alsosignificance as ethical leaders make their way into the world.HIRE is an acronym for the building blocks <strong>of</strong> the Leadership Program: Honesty, Integrity, Responsibility and Enthusiasm. As astudent progresses through the program, the acronym evolves into Help, Inspire, React and Engage.Patrick Healy ’10 (Indiana University) and Melissa Zambrano ’10 (North Central College)receive the 2010 HIRE Award from John Kozojed, Assistant Principal, at Honors Night in May.Olivia Jackson ’09 was named as the first HIRE Award recipient last year, followed by Melissa Zambrano and Patrick Healy fromthe Class <strong>of</strong> 2010, who emerged as exemplary student leaders.THE ST. KATHARINE DREXEL RACIAL JUSTICE AWARD<strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Principal, Sister KathleenAnne Tait, O.P. was named by the Archdiocese <strong>of</strong> Chicago’sOffice for Racial Justice to receive the St. Katharine DrexelRacial Justice Award. His Eminence Francis Cardinal George,O.M.I. presided over the ceremony.The St. Katharine Drexel Racial Justice Award is namedin honor <strong>of</strong> the American founder <strong>of</strong> the Sisters <strong>of</strong> theBlessed Sacrament, who devoted her entire life to holinessand work among Native and African American peoples.Sister Kathleen Anne Tait is a founding member <strong>of</strong>the Springfield Dominican and Archdiocese <strong>of</strong> Chicago’santi-racism teams. Her commitment to the principles <strong>of</strong>anti-racism as an institutional issue that must be pro-activelyand effectively addressed, has led to the establishment <strong>of</strong> thefirst institutional anti-racism team in the archdiocesan schoolsystem, and the Springfield Dominican network <strong>of</strong> schools.<strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> President, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P.is delighted that Sister Kathleen Anne has been selected forthis award.“Sister Kathleen Anne has been very faithful in herefforts to work toward a school environment at <strong>Marian</strong><strong>Catholic</strong> that is anti-racist both in policy and in practice,”she said.Others from <strong>Marian</strong>’s Anti-Racism Team agree.“Sister Kathleen Anne has been instrumental in creatinga strategic plan designed to foster a positive climate for<strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s diverse student body. Heradvocacy includes organizing an Anti-Racism Committeethat consists <strong>of</strong> board members, administrators, teachers,staff, parents and other stakeholders, who are dedicated todismantling racism within the school community,” said Dr.Shirley Morris, Assistant Principal <strong>of</strong> Academics at <strong>Marian</strong>.Reginald Summerrise, current parent and member <strong>of</strong><strong>Marian</strong>’s Anti-Racism Committee, echoes similar feelings.“By far, Sister Kathleen Anne is one <strong>of</strong> the most forwardthinkingleaders when it comes to diversity,” he said. “Shealso has a special gift in her ability to forge relationshipsamong groups <strong>of</strong> people.”3

2010 MOTHERS CLUB FASHION SHOW“ROCK THE RED CARPET” A BIG HIT!Music, dancing and fashion are mainstays in the Mothers Club Fashion Showand, again this year, senior models put on a great performance. Emceed by NcheOnyema ’02, fashions from area shops and boutiques were modeled by over 100students, faculty, and parents.Proceeds from the annual Mothers Club Fashion Show directly benefit studentsand faculty at <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Funds from previous shows havepurchased dozens <strong>of</strong> laptop computers for use in study hall, and multiple LCDprojectors for classrooms.Nche Onyema ’02 not only emceed the Fashion Show,but also choreographed many <strong>of</strong> the runway numbers.On the two Saturdays following theFashion Show, the Mothers Club heldits first “Red Carpet Boutique” wherehundreds <strong>of</strong> gently used prom dresseswere <strong>of</strong>fered at steep discounts to youngwomen from <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> andsurrounding high schools. Mothers ClubChair Kathy Zagotta (mother <strong>of</strong> Nicko’02, Peter ’06, and Mary Kate ’10) ispleased with the results. “The idea <strong>of</strong>selling gently used prom dresses has beenaround for a number <strong>of</strong> years,” she stated.With families struggling in this economy,it seemed like the perfect time to give ita try. ATHLETICS·SPEECH·WINTER GUARDErick Gavin ’10 repeats as theIHSA Men’s 110 meter <strong>High</strong> Hurdles State Champion.Julian Childers ’12 placed 9th in IHSAState Tennis Singles competition.Erick Gavin joined some elite company on May 29 whenhis effort <strong>of</strong> 13.90 earned him a second straight IHSA statechampionship in the 110-meter hurdles in the State Trackand Field meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.The winning mark also set a school record in the event forGavin, who will continue his career at the University <strong>of</strong>Michigan. Ironically, the only other <strong>Marian</strong> Spartan to winmultiple state titles also became a Wolverine. Casey Taylor ’05won the IHSA women’s triple jump state championship in 2003,2004 and 2005.Overall, <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> has captured ten individual IHSAstate titles in athletics.Men’s tennis continues to climb the ladder toward the state’selite, as the Spartans posted their highest state tournamentfinish since 1980 with 12 points and an 18th place statefinish this year.Sophomore Julian Childers led the way with five victoriesat the state tournament for a 9th place individual finishin singles, as he followed up East Suburban <strong>Catholic</strong>Conference and IHSA Sectional titles. Senior D.J. Rogalateamed with sophomore Mitch Zavesky for a 3-2 doublesrecord at the state tournament.With several key members returning, <strong>Marian</strong> will try tobuild on the most successful two-year dual meet record inschool history (45-5).Youth was served in women’ track and field, where a pair<strong>of</strong> Spartan underclassmen qualified for the IHSA Statemeet. Freshman Imani Haynes earned 12th place in thestate in the 110-meter high hurdles, while sophomore PaigeCrawford was 27th in the state in the 400-meter dash.<strong>Marian</strong> also captured third place in the ESCC meet, with apair <strong>of</strong> relays setting conference meet records.MARIAN CATHOLIC GROUP INTERPRETATIONEARNS STATE TITLEState Champion Group Interpretation members areJaboukie Young-White, Adam King, Conor Keane,Kyle Fitzgerald, seated. Imbued with religious stereotypes, “Protestants Cry, Too” alsoportrays a family’s change <strong>of</strong> heart once their stern and ultra-religious father s<strong>of</strong>tenshis view.<strong>Marian</strong> Forensics Director Mark Donaway is proud <strong>of</strong> the team’saccomplishments.“With a multi-cultural cast, the students embraced the story to perfection,”he stated.6

Having won 1st place in theScholastic Open Class in 2009, the <strong>Marian</strong> Guard was promoted toWorld Class this year with the hopes <strong>of</strong> making it into the finals <strong>of</strong>15 teams from among 25 teams competing. By capturing 5th placeoverall, the <strong>Marian</strong> Guard made history as they placed higher in theirfirst year than any other newly promoted team.The guard’s show is titled “Ashes to Ashes.”Guard members, dressed for a funeral, deal with overwhelminggrief felt at the loss <strong>of</strong> a loved one with “Ashes to Ashes.” As agravedigger fills a freshly dug grave with shovelfuls <strong>of</strong> dirt from awheelbarrow, a sobbing widow holding a black umbrella is escortedthrough the scene as she tries to manage her sadness. When shecollapses at the graveside, unable to bear her loss, a close friendpicks her up and consoles her, holding her as they slowly exitthe floor. In addition to traveling throughoutIndiana and other parts <strong>of</strong> the Midwest to race, theteam visits area high schools to recruit new studentsinto the program.Noth is the crew chief <strong>of</strong> the drag racing team. “Imanage the computer and data systems in the car, andindividualize the settings for our driver,” he said. “Wecompete in the NHRA Division 3 Super Comp Class,however, we are one <strong>of</strong> only a few teams that utilize afuel-injected engine rather than a carbureted engine.General Motors donated two GM LS 7 engines toour program which are similar to a Corvette engine.Because the dragster is lighter than a Corvette, we canreach top speeds easily.”After graduation in 2011, he hopes to get a positionwith a pr<strong>of</strong>essional Formula 1 racing team.Ron CentanniLong-time MCHS Guidance Counselor,Ron Centanni, has retired after 29 years<strong>of</strong> service to countless <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong>students, including some entire families <strong>of</strong>siblings. Perhaps best known for his eclecticcollection <strong>of</strong> “stuff” in his <strong>of</strong>fice, and beingone <strong>of</strong> the biggest Cubs fans on campus,Mr. Centanni has exciting plans forhis retirement.“I’m going to add a lot <strong>of</strong> stamps to mypassport,” he said. “It will be interestingto travel during other seasons than justsummer. Asia and South America aretoward the top <strong>of</strong> the list, but I’ll still findtime to volunteer for Tinley Park villageactivities, and I might just take it easy fora change.”13


2010 CLASS REUNIONSThe 2010 Class Reunions are set and reunion committees are gearing up for fun in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. Leadership Centerat <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. The Classes <strong>of</strong> 1970 and 1990 will hold their reunions on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The Classes<strong>of</strong> 1975, 1980, 1985, and 2000 will have their reunions on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Cost is $55 per person.Started last year, the five year reunion class is treated to a complimentary informal reunion sponsored by the <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> AlumniAssociation. Our deepest sympathy andprayerful support go out to the family <strong>of</strong> Paige and to all those who love her.Edward Krumb ’65 passed away May 31, 2010 in Prosser, Washington. Active in theFraternal Order <strong>of</strong> Eagles, and serving at both the district and state levels, Krumb wasnamed Mr. Eagle for 2006-2007. He lived by the Eagles’ motto, “People Helping People.”Harriet M. Kampe, mother <strong>of</strong> Dr. Carolyn J. Kampe ’62, and Joan (Kampe) Figg ’64and grandmother <strong>of</strong> Samuel Figg ’86 and Frederic Figg ’87, passed away in March.Many may remember Mrs. Kampe from the very earliest days <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong>when she worked in the bookstore. Carolyn remarked that her mother was always veryproud <strong>of</strong> being a part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Marian</strong> community and enjoyed her experiences here.Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.May the souls <strong>of</strong> the faithful departed, through the mercy <strong>of</strong> God, rest in peace.
