A woman came into the ED/Admitting areabecause her mother arrived earlier by ambulance.Later, while her mother was having tests, shesat in our ED waiting room. When Dee fromHousekeeping came into the room to straightenup. She said hello to the woman and soon theybegan to chat. Suddenly, the woman began tosob. Dee immediately knelt down and gentlyspoke to her. As the woman left for the eveningshe said, “You are all angels to me and mymom.” I believe that sentiment came not onlyfrom the care her mother received but also bythe kindness shown by Dee. I can honestly saythat I feel blessed to have witnessed Jesus’ loveworking through Dee. (Source: Reprint from theFISH newsletter)The Service Excellence Team recently introduced aService Rounding program as a means for ‘catching’problems and fixing them before the patient leaves.By actively rounding with our patients, we hopeto reduce the number of complaints to the PatientAdvocate post-discharge, increase satisfactionresults, and obtain real-time feedback. Byproactively looking at our processes and systemswe can work through concerns and alleviate thepotential for dissatisfaction between both ourpatients and employees. Our patients are transient. Many times we don’tget an opportunity to form relationships. For thatreason the best way for us to show the patientand their family compassion, dignity, and respectis to communicate with them on a regular basis.Information is empowering; for our patients andtheir families it also relieves anxiety. Bobbi Illig,RN, Director, Emergency Department.2Franciscan Healing MinistryIn Franciscan tradition, a healing ministry is a relational experiencethat calls for a conscious, respectful response to the truth that allpeople are created in God’s image, and all of creation is holy.We require all of our employees and volunteers todemonstrate respectful relationships with patientsand each other. When we treat our patients andeach other with dignity and respect we are opento nonjudgmental behavior, which allows us to bemore accepting. In the spirit of St. Francis webelieve it isn’t our heroic measures, but humanunderstanding, that best exhibit our spiritual ministry. The Surgery Department staff doesn’t get todo the same type of patient service roundingas other units because our patients are usuallysedated and not as aware of our presence. Welook for creative ways to make a patient feel lessvulnerable or frightened. Each situation calls fora different technique. For instance, when a childis having surgery we carry them in rather thanpush them in on the gurney. When we reach thedoors we tell him/her to blow and the magicdoors will open. The child blows, the doors openand almost immediately he/she is at ease andfeels safe. Other times I will visit the waiting roomto see if a family would like some food or warmblanket, hoping to give some measure of comfortwhile they wait for news. Anne Abler, Director,Surgery.Acting out the Franciscan tradition of healingrequires us to respond with creativity within ourmeans and minister to the needs of the poorand vulnerable. We would like to thank allof you for the wonderfulcare you gave to my dad.I would have never madeit without you! My dadalways looked forward tothe girls coming in so hecould ‘give’ them a hardtime! Especially Mary Lou –he loved teasing herso much. I personallyappreciated each and everyone of you – you helpedme out so much.May God Bless You All!(from a patient)Recently a member of the Pharmacy Departmentworked with a drug company to get a veryexpensive drug paid for and helped alleviatea patient’s anxiety and worry. M i s s i o n I n t e g r a t i o n A c c o u n t a b i l i t yTo my caregivers,Words cannot express theway I feel about all of you. Each and every one ofyou played a part in myrecovery. The care Ireceived from all of you,24-hours a day wasoutstanding. I was blessedto have you watch overme with love andprofessionalism whiletending to my physical andemotional well-being. I callall of you my angels!(from a patient)The Franciscan healing ministry is holistic, caringfor the spiritual and emotional needs of the patientand family. It also requires the appropriate use oftechnology. Both are integral dimensions ofcompetent and compassionate care. We engageall employees, volunteers, and lay leaders in thisholistic healing ministry. In the hospital-wideService Excellence Program, employees, regardlessof where they work, are patient care focused. Weare responsible for ensuring that a patient’s stay isa good experience. We provide Service BehaviorStandards training to our employees and evaluatethem through the performance evaluation process.Diane Beckmann, Certified OccupationalTherapy Assistant, (COTA), worked witha patient who was challenging to engage. She interested him in a wood project.Upon its completion she sought the expertadvice of Tom, Maintenance Technician IICarpenter, Plant Services. While Diane andthe patient talked with Tom about the stainingproject, the patient showed interest in Tom’swork area and asked if Tom would make him alap table. Tom asked the patient to draw it and hewould make it. The patient drew a small pictureof the table and a few days later Tom broughtthe finished table to the patient. Tom took theinitiative to make the table and offered to allowDiane and the patient to use his work area tostain the initial project that piqued the patient’sinterest and engaged him in his therapy.(Source: Reprint from the FISH newsletter)3We believe integrity of relationships and mutual respectbetween those served and those who render serviceare significant hallmarks of our Franciscan culture. We perform hourly rounding – aides, RNs andhousekeepers. We focus on asking our patientsabout their pain, whether they need to go to therestroom, or if they’d like help repositioning. The housekeepers may not be able to do thehands-on but they can ask and tell the patientsomeone will be right in. This Service Roundinghas shown a decrease in patient falls, less callsto the front desk, and higher patient satisfaction.Gloria Koenig, Director Orthopaedic/Surgical Unit.We offer assistance to our employees andvolunteers to help them recognize and understandtheir own and others’ personality traits – familyrelationships, and community interdependence – asintegral to the spirituality and best work style ofeach individual. Integrity and respect are significanthallmarks reflected through our relationships toexemplify the Franciscan spirit.Service Rounding isn’t comprised of any onething it’s a culmination of everything we do.During one of my rounds I overheard a wife ofa patient talking to a family member. She said,“His nurse is so wonderful and gives me hope.”Kathy Leonhardt, Director ICCU/CardiacCommitment to CommunityThe local and regional civic and Churchcommunities recognize St. Nicholas Hospitalas an enduring sign of Franciscan presencewith a history of stable, dedicated service. All of our programs, activities, and services centeron our mission.
