St. Nicholas Hospital’s Occupational Health/Corporate Wellness
Department provides a unique workplace program designed
to help you and your employees minimize risks, manage chronic
medical conditions, prevent looming health problems, care
for work-related emergencies, and open communication regarding
their safe return to work. Meet the healthcare needs of your

When you contract with us you have the benefit of ‘one-stop shopping’. All of your occupational
health needs such as Drug and Alcohol testing, in-clinic medical monitoring, injury management,
Industrial Rehabilitation, and wellness and health education services are all here – under one
roof. In addition, we can work with you to provide an onsite nurse practitioner, physical therapist,
and other specialists as needed.
The Occupational Health clinic offers urgent care for initial,
non-trauma, work injuries from 07:30 until 16:30 Monday-Friday.
James Kuplic, MD and our two nurse practitioners, Cynthia Fisher,
APNP and Cathy Sukowaty, APNP provide initial assessment
and treatment for a wide variety of work related injuries and
illnesses. Unless referred to a specialist, the Occupational Health
Department provides all follow-up appointments.

Managing Workers’ Compensation cases is complex and time
intensive. The St. Nicholas Hospital Occupational Health
Services staff works with us not only to manage these cases in
a cost-effective and caring manner – but also helps us take a
preventive and early intervention approach.
When an employee needs to go to St. Nicholas Hospital’s
Emergency Department, the Occupational Health staff evaluates
the extent of his/her injury and promptly provides me
with the information I need to meet OSHA requirements.
They understand, meet, and exceed my needs in a professional
and friendly manner. I especially enjoy our open lines
of communication and their ability to help me cut through
what could be a medical maze mired in red tape. They provide
knowledgeable and consistent ways for me to promote
compliance and ensure quality results. They also helped me
develop and implement a Return to Work Statement form that
outlines the employee’s diagnosis, assessment and return to
work recommendation. No question, the staff at St. Nicholas
Hospital’s Occupational Health Services is a great resource
for both my employer and me.

We work with the Occupational Health/Corporate Wellness
staff at St. Nicholas Hospital and are very pleased with both
the service and results. They work with us to identify our
risks and set up appropriate health, wellness, and safety
programs to help lower or, if possible, eliminate the risks.
We are recognizing a positive change in our workforce since

As the Manager of Safety for PLENCO I appreciate the
Occupational Health/Corporate Wellness staff’s open
communication. From Dr. Kuplic to the nurse practitioners
and therapist their honest opinions and evaluations on injured
employees are a great benefit to our company, both from a
safety compliance standpoint and cost perspective. I feel we
have more than a business contract; we have a relationship.
For example, I recently called the nurse practitioner to describe
a rash an employee developed. We didn’t know whether he
developed the rash on the job or at home. She offered me
several recommendations to pass along to the employee and
stated that if none of them worked within three or four days
to have the employee stop in for a check-up. When it comes
to the health and well-being of our employees, it’s great
to have people I can call. I rely upon their expertise and trust
them as professionals and friends.

Wellness & Health Education Services – To identify
the services that best meet your needs, we offer a
comprehensive health risk assessment (HRA). This is
a tool designed to measure important indicators of
health through screenings and a detailed questionnaire.
Aggregate data from the HRA, combined with a review
of your healthcare claims experience, will help us
customize programs and services that will promote
wellness, lower your healthcare expenses, and improve
the morale, productivity, and health of your employees.

In-Clinic Medical Monitoring – hearing, drug & alcohol testing,
vaccinations, physicals, health screenings and education, respirator

St. Nicholas Hospital’s Freedom from Smoking program
I used to smoke more than two packs of cigarettes a day for 33 years and at 9:00 pm on May 6, 2007 I snubbed out my last
cigarette. I thought about quitting often but just couldn’t do it. When my employer offered the St. Nicholas Hospital’s
Freedom from Smoking program I decided to sign up and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Thinking about my
future I realized that I’d like to retire and enjoy several years of fulfilling my dreams but to do that I really needed to quit
smoking; I needed to get healthier. I can already say that I feel so much better when I wake up in the morning. Sure, I’ve put
on a few pounds and I’m working on that but, like I tell the people who are trying to quit, I can lose weight but I can’t get
another set of lungs. Today I help as a volunteer speaker for the hospital’s Freedom from Smoking classes. I tell them how
great the rewards are – health, financial, and social. I also tell them it takes a lot of will power but if I can quit after 33 years
anybody can. I am so glad my employer offered this program and I am really proud of myself for taking control. It’s great
to join the ranks of non-smokers.
