FROM THEDRIVER’SSEATWelcome to a very wet Issue 8 of Urban RacR. I don’t mean wet in the sense ofpornography but rather that winter has finally arrived which means the rain is making itvery difficult to keep our cars sparkling clean. Speaking of pornography, this leads meto our cover car... we feature Neil’s combination of pornographically booming ItalianFlair. Bass booming leads me to our next feature which is a prize-winning SQcompetingfavourite amongst the people’s car lovers.’ SEATWinter is now at full storm, pardon the pun. May was a very unpredictable month asto the success of events. Regionals had a fair share of action in the wet with quite afew spills. The Wesbank Super Series Nationals was also down in the Cape - you canexpect it in issue 9. Speaking of events, we bring you the revival of drag racing inCape Town with the first successful MSA drag meeting and pics from a Street 2 Stripevents that didn’t get rained out. We also bring you the highlights of the Canal WalkExtreme Motor Show and Gymkhana as well as some of the fresh metal to bereleased by major car manufacturers, albeit some are only concepts. ABugatti Veyron weighs 1 888kg. A CaterhamR500 only weighs 470kg. My plate of dinnerweighs more than a R500, no really – it does.In the end this all translates into a power toweight ratio… The Bugatti's is 522Bhp/ton VSthe R500's is 532Bhp/ton.P A G E 1 5| U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E8

dRIFT SKOOL WITHTAKUMI-SAN!’lesson#2THE WORLD’S DRIFT LEAGUES EXPLAINEDeuropeBritish Drift ChampThe British Drift Championship is a smaller amateur feeder series for the EDC.This is just one of many events in the United Kingdom.Prodriftw w w . u r b a n r a c. c o . z aTakumi-san elaborates in detail in this ourpenultimate feature on the world of drifting. This time we focus on Europe including theUnited Kingdom and Australasia (that’s all thelands down under mate) - make sure yousoak in the info as next month the lesson isconcluded. Thereafter... it’s a secret.Prodrift was started in 2003 by Graham McNamara, the brother of Irish stardrifter and Formula D driver Darren McNamara and is the longest runningdrift series in Europe. It also one of the EDC's biggest competitors. There aretwo different Prodrift series, one for Ireland and another that travels acrossEurope and works with other European drift organizations. Prodrift events canbe seen in places like Sweden, Finland and Benelux. Prodrift is trying hard toengage the European drivers to compete with the series' Irish drivers but itcan be difficult task uniting all the different countries of Europe. Prodriftevents seem to be a haven for the AE86 Corolla & AE85 Levin, cars whichhave been phased out in many other pro drift series due to bigger, fastercircuts & powerful 600+ horsepower silvia's, chasers, etc etc.rP A G E4 1| U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 8

King of Europew w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z aThe King of Europe is a fast growing drift series that also happens to be oneof the most ambitious in the world. In 2008 K.O.E held events in places as farreaching as Russia, Serbia, and the Czech Republic. In 2007 there was evenan event in Dubai! The KOE is also one of the few drift series worldwidewhere European cars outnumber Japanese cars. The BMW 3-series inparticular is an extremely popular platform for drivers in this series. Thecurrent series champ is well known drifter Paul Vlasblom of the Netherlandswho drives an E36 BMW 3-series wagon and even afew old camaro's & transJDM AllstarsJDM Allstars is also a UK-based drift series and includes many drivers fromthe EDC. While the EDC focuses on the competition aspect of drift, JDMAllstars is more about the showmanship of drifting. Hellenic Drift ChampionshipGreece has a surprisingly large drift movement. In fact, in 2007 & 2008Team Orange performed drift demos for the Greek fans at car shows & attheir version of “KING OF THE MOUNTAIN” at the Ritsona Rally. At the forefrontof the drift scene in Greece is the Hellenic Drift Championship which was juststarted in 2008. The judge for the this new series is "Sleepy" who also judgesin the EDC & even judged at the South African National Drift Series Iattended in 2008 ,that was held at Killarney Race Track in Cape Town , TheGreek drift scene has a very interesting mix of cars including Japanese andEuropean cars and it also looks to have a large number of classic cars thatcan still be seen competing.AustraliaOf course the car-crazed Aussies also have a verylarge drift scene. There are a few different drift seriesthat are held across Australia.Drift Australiaw w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z aThe biggest series down under is the Toyo Tyres Drift Australia series. Started in2005 Drift Australia's calendar includes events that take place all over thelarge country. Like Formula D, the Drift Australia series also sees national TVcoverage in Australia, except the coverage for each round is three hourslong in total! D.A is considered the "official" Australian Drift Championship. Afew of the top Australian drifters even went to the United States in 2007 forthe D1GP all star event. The cars in this series include a lot of Japaneseimports and even a couple examples of Australia's native Holden (theirversion of the Chevy Lumina) muscle cars. A unique aspect of the D.A seriesis the long length of the courses they run on and many of them havestraight sections between the corners. The bad news I received the other day was that Drift Australia haveannounced that the '09 Championship will consist of a single roundchampionship event on the 19th & 20th of September 2009.The reasongiven was that the Global Economic Climate has forced main sponsorTOYO TYRES, to batten down its finances & that meant they had to scaledown their sponsorship towards the series for 2009.Series director WayneBoatwright said that they were very grateful for Toyo's support over the last 4years, and they will remain positive about the future of the sport in Australiaand will focus their attention on trying to secure the backing required torebuild the championship to a MULTI-ROUND SERIES.Nordic Drift SeriesPro drifting for Norway, Finland, and Sweden. This series also has a widevariety of cars. If you search for galleries of this series on the net you will spota few ex-D1GP cars imported from Japan being driven here. BMW cars arealso popular here although the majority drive Japanese machines. You willnotice a lot of the really cool BMW's coming from this series. After Japan, its off the United States where drifting first began itsworldwide spread in popularity.P A G E 4 5| U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 8
