<strong>SilverSneakers</strong> <strong>Classic</strong> <strong>Instructor</strong> <strong>Training</strong>(Formerly Muscular Strength & Range of Movement -- MSROM)<strong>SilverSneakers</strong> <strong>Classic</strong> is one of five core <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> group exercise classes (<strong>Classic</strong>, Circuit, Yoga,Cardio and Splash).<strong>SilverSneakers</strong> classes can only be taught in locations contracted by Healthways to offer the<strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Fitness Program, or taught by Healthways FLEX instructorshttp://www.silversneakers.com/FLEX.aspx<strong>Instructor</strong>s wanting to teach <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> classes must attend:□ Healthways Core Knowledge On-Line Course□ <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Basics On-Line Course□ The on-line course specific to the class format: <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> <strong>Classic</strong> <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Circuit <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Yoga <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Cardio <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Splash□ The in-person workshop specific to the class format: <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> <strong>Classic</strong> (you are fulfilling this today)* <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Circuit <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Yoga <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Cardio <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Splash<strong>Instructor</strong>s must be current in CPR and maintain an approved fitness instructor credential orhave a fitness related degree.*You must sign our workshop attendance verification form to get credit for taking this workshop at Fitness Fest aspart of fulfilling the above training requirements.<strong>Classic</strong> Class Format – 45-60 minute class1. Warm-up and Rhythmic Range of Movement Stretching -- seated or standing, 10 minutes increase heart rate gradually through large muscle movement increase range of movement with progressive rhythmic movements2. Muscular Strength and Endurance – seated or standing, 20 minutes choreography with resistance tools (elastic tubing with handles, hand-held weights andthe <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> ball) to strengthen all muscle groups and address common muscleimbalances choreography to improve skill-related fitness components (agility, balance,coordination, power, speed)3. Cool-Down – seated or standing , 5-10 minutes decrease heart rate and respiration gradually with rhythmic movements4. Final Stretch –gradually coming to seated position, 5-10 minutes increase range of movement with deeper stretches5. Relaxation – seated, 5 minutes increase the participants’ feeling of well-being and success


Classroom set-upThe chair is used for the following: Seated support if participants need the option of additional stability Standing support from behind or to the side of the chair Seated support for the final stretch and relaxation segmentsChairs should be spaced to allow for 16 square feet of working space per participant.For classes with more than 30 participants, provide an extra instructor or staff member.<strong>SilverSneakers</strong> <strong>Classic</strong> does not offer floor work options.Contraindicated movements and exercisesForward flexion from a seated position at the hip greater than 45 degreesUncontrolled momentum as it relates to a full range of movementInversions: forward flexion from a standing position at the hip greater than 90 degreesJamming, locking, or torqueing of jointsOveruse of a joint or muscle group: action is continuously repeated beyond safety guidelines forrisk versus benefitNeck hyperextensionDouble leg lifts = seated exercises with both feet (unsupported) off the floorForced hyperextension/hyperflexion of jointsDouble arm overhead triceps extension with hand-held weightsClass instruction requirements<strong>Instructor</strong>s must cue a minimum three times each class: Correct postural alignment – “Chest up” Proper breathing techniques – “Count out loud” Hydration – “Get a drink of water” <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> Perceived Exertion Chart – “On a scale of 1 to 10, how hard are you working?Give me a number”All three pieces of equipment must be used in each class (elastic tubing with handles, hand-heldweights, <strong>SilverSneakers</strong> ball)Equipment is stored underneath the chair.
