University RoundupAround the Rindge campus . . .NH Partners in Education Gold Circle Awards werebestowed on Boynton Middle School and Franklin PierceUniversity on October 30. Bill Beardslee, AssociateDirector of Student Involvement & Spiritual Life,accompanied Cassie DeMontigny ’13 to Concord forthe ceremony; Cassie is the Community Service StudentManager for the volunteers of this program.Franklin Pierce University Trustee,Jean D’Meza Leuner, dean ofthe University of Central FloridaCollege of Nursing, was inductedinto the American Academy ofNursing in October 2012. Leuner, aprofessor and the College’s foundingdean, was one of four nursingprofessionals selected from Florida for the 2012 inductionsin Washington, D.C.Franklin Pierce University,s Anthropology Departmentwas honored to host the New Hampshire ArcheologicalSociety’s Annual Meeting on campus in October 2012.Seated left to right: Rich Grogan,Jim McDerby, and Prof. Jason Little,with SBA group standing behind them.The Small BusinessAdvisory (SBA) groupadvised by Prof. JasonLittle at Franklin PierceUniversity presentedmarketing initiatives toJim McDerby, owner of anew local business, SedonaPump Stations, LLC., at apresentation in December 2012. The SBA partnered withthe New Hampshire Small Business Development Center(NHSBDC), whose mission is to help organizations andstart-up companies develop business initiatives at no cost.Rich Grogan, regional director for the NHSBDC, alsoattended the presentation.The Empty Bowls event(part of an internationalgrassroots effort tofight hunger: www.emptybowls.net)raised more than $1,500last November. The majority of the funds were donatedto the Rindge Food Pantry. Students in Prof. SusanSilverman’s FYI classes chose to use $200 of the moneyraised to fund microfinance loans through www.kiva.org.When those loans are repaid, they will donate that money aswell to the Rindge Food Pantry.Franklin PierceUniversity’s Sodexodining services team wonthe Localvore CookingChallenge, a competitionin which higher educationinstitutions competed to create the best entrée out of locallyproduced ingredients. They were also judged on marketing,culinary innovation, and guest interaction. Franklin Piercecame out in the lead, competing against 12 other NewEngland colleges and universities.An Inquiry-BasedShowcase & AwardsCeremony was heldlast December. TheShowcase highlighted 48diverse research projectsDr. Birge talks with Kyle McAnallen ’16which were selected fromclose to 600 projects done primarily by freshmen whoparticipated in the First-Year Inquiry class, an integralpart of the University’s new General & Liberal Educationcurriculum. Five students were awarded “Follett Awards forInquiry-Based Research,” and each received a $200 bookaward. Award winners were: Maria Ganio, DanielleTurcotte, Max Fanwick, JoBeth Weinreich, andKyle McAnallen.www.franklinpierce.edu 21
