Powerful PathsAnother exciting component of the environmentalprogram is a new affiliation agreement betweenFranklin Pierce and Antioch University New EnglandGraduate School, a nationally recognized environmentaleducation leader. Students who wish to accelerate theirundergraduate education can apply to enter a 3-2 programin which they earn a master’s degree in EnvironmentalStudies from Antioch University New England in five yearsfrom date of admission to Franklin Pierce. This rigorousprogram includes two internships and a senior projectbefore graduating with a master’s degree. In addition,Franklin Pierce undergraduates who envision careersthat help businesses become more sustainable mayenroll in the Franklin Pierce M.B.A. program in Energyand Sustainability.The environmental program and M.B.A. faculty are nowdesigning pathways for Environmental Science andEnvironmental Studies undergraduates to transition tothe Energy and Sustainability track of the M.B.A. andtake graduate courses in their senior year. Place-basedand community-based learning opportunities alsodistinguish the environmental program at Franklin Pierce;very few New England universities offer undergraduatessuch a diverse range of field courses, interdisciplinaryexperiential opportunities, community partnerships, andgraduate school options.Environmental OpportunitiesFranklin Pierce graduates majoring in EnvironmentalScience have gone on to post-graduate study as wellas full-time employment opportunities in the field. Forexample, Dan Weykman ’01 is a soil conservationistwith the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service,and Kelly Henry ’03 is enrolled in a Ph.D. in WetlandScience program at the University of Louisiana, BatonRouge. David Cameron ’92 is a senior environmentalscientist with AECOM environmental and engineeringconsultants in Westford, Mass.; and Kristen Bean ’10 isan environmental scientist with VHB, environmental andengineering consultants in Bedford, N.H.Those scheduled to graduate in the program have alsoearned distinction: Jennifer Bell ’13 has been offereda graduate assistantship studying wetlands as part of amaster’s degree at Ball State University (see "Institutes"on p. 17); Ben DiLauro ’13 completed an internship usingGeographic Information Systems to map vernal pools inPeterborough: and Jennifer Jones ’13 is being recruitedto continue her research on threatened turtles with theUniversity of Massachusetts-Amherst. As these successesdemonstrate, the Franklin Pierce environmental programcontinues to prepare its students well.The program’s commitment to environmental education,responsibility, and activism is reflected in its continuallyevolving curriculum, additional faculty, and innovativeopportunities for student engagement.
