Change’s Executive Secretary 

Christiana Figueres said

major decisive steps in 

Durban. The first step relates 

to completing the most 

comprehensive package ever 

to help developing countries 

adapt to climate change and 

to limit the growth of their 

greenhouse gas emissions, 

which was decided at the UN 

Climate Change Conference 

in Cancun last year. 

“The technology 

mechanism and the 

Adaptation Committee 

agreed upon in Cancun can 

be completed here in 

Durban so that they can 

begin benefitting people in 

2012,” Figueres said. 

“And in Durban, the first 

phase of the design of the 

Green Climate Fund can be 

approved as a major step on 

the road towards better 

supported climate action,” 

she stated. 

Figueres said governments 

can also ramp up funding 

towards the US$100 billion of 

long-term climate finance 

they have already agreed to 

provide by 2020 and need to 

work out the “what” and the 

“how” for a review agreed 

upon in Cancun that will 

assess the adequacy of a 

below two degrees celsius 

temperature limit. 

She said the second 

decisive step relates to how 

governments will work 

together to achieve their 

common goal of limiting the 

global temperature rise to a 

level which will prevent the 

worst ravages of climate 

change. 

“This means, as a central 

task for Durban, answering 

the very important question 

of the future of the Kyoto 

Protocol. At the same time 

governments will need to 

agree on how they want to 

pursue a broader framework 

to reduce greenhouse gases 

under the Climate Change 

Convention,” she said.

Delegates were treated to 

Durban’s sumptuous cuisines 

and a range of traditional 

dances which included a 

fusion of Indian and Zulu 

dance. Amongst the 

performers was the 

renowned Maskandi 

musician Phuzekhemisi who 

brought the house on fire 

with his electric 

performance. 

He had delegates sweating 

on the dance floor with his 

mesmerising guitar skills. 

Storyteller and poet Gcina 

Mhlophe handled the formal 

procedures very well as the 

master of ceremonies. 

International and 

Governance Relations Unit 

Head, Eric Apelgren, said 

they were honoured to host 

the delegates and to officially 

welcome them. He also said 

that there were too many 

people than expected but the 

event was a success.

THE CITY’s Energy Office has 

held a workshop at the City 

Hall for school principals 

across the region. The 

workshop educated the 

principals about the 

importance of caring for 

nature and climate change. 

A teacher, Mbali Dlamini 

who represented 

Mangqakaza Primary School 

Principal said: “We have 

acquired a lot of knowledge 

on the climate change 

conference. Initially, it was 

unclear what the conference 

was about. We will surely pass 

this knowledge to our pupils 

as people on the ground 

really have limited knowledge 

when it comes to climate 

change. We need such 

initiatives.” 

Senior Manager in the 

Energy Office Derek Morgan 

said: “We must reduce the 

amount of greenhouse gases 

that we put in the 

atmosphere, many gases 

come from things we do 

every day. These greenhouse 

gases trap energy in the 

atmosphere and make the 

earth warmer. We should 

plant more trees as it reduces 

greenhouse gases and 

increase the amount of 

recycling we do on a regular 

basis,” said Morgan.

Planning and Climate 

Protection Department also 

gave a talk on Climate 

Change.

Durban weathers the storm

THE Municipality’s 

Emergency Control and 

Disaster Management Unit 

responded to numerous 

reports of flooding, damage 

to property and 

infrastructure, as a result of 

the storms in the past two 

weeks. Mayor James 

Nxumalo accompanied by 

the Chairman of the Human 

Settlements and 

Infrastructure Committee, 

Cllr Nigel Gumede visited 

the storm ravaged areas to 

assess the situation. 

The Mayor conveyed 

condolences to the affected 

families and said that the 

Municipality will work 

together with the 

Department of Co-operative 

Governance and Traditional 

affairs as well as the 

Department of Human 

Settlements and Public 

Works to assist those affected 

by the storm. He urged 

affected communities to 

contact their local 

councillors for help in 

accessing assistance. 

Heavy rains continued on 

Sunday night, 27/11/11 and 

left more people destitute. 

Upon receiving this report 

on Monday morning, the 

MEC of Cooperative 

Governance and Traditional 

Affairs, Nomsa Dube 

together with Cllr Nigel 

Gumede visited the affected 

areas. Since the beggining of 

the storms, 10 people have 

been confirmed dead in the 

province.

TWO thousand indegenous 

and fruit trees were donated 

to the community of 

Nazareth near Pinetown this 

week. EThekwini Deputy 

Mayor Councillor Nomvuzo 

Shabalala thanked MTN and 

Food and Trees for Africa for 

donating 1000 trees and 1000 

fruit trees as contribution to 

poverty alleviation. The 

Deputy Mayor said tree 

planting contributes to 

nature conservation, fights 

poverty and addresses 

climate change issues. 

“I would like to thank MTN 

and Food and Trees for Africa 

for making this day possible. 

Trees contribute to the well 

being of our lives. Without 

trees we would not be able to 

have clean and fresh air. 

Everything we consume 

comes from the soil,” said 

Shabalala. 

She said trees were a major 

factor in fighting elements of 

climate change. 

She said Durban was a very 

warm place but due to 

climate change all of this has 

changed. 

“The Nazareth community 

should appreciate the trees 

planted today during the 

time when we as the City are 

holding the United Nations 

Conference on Climate

the central region, with 19 

reports of flooding; Umlazi 

and Clermont with shacks at 

Quarry Road and Puntan’s 

Hill being most affected. 

Some traffic lights were 

affected, and motorists were 

urged to exercise caution 

and treat intersections as 

four way stops. Later that 

day most of the roads 

including the M4 Highway 

were being cleared. 

The Municipality attended 

all the affected areas and 

emergency personnel were 

fully mobilised to respond to 

all reported incidents. 

The MEC, Nomsa Dube 

said there was about three 

hundred people who were 

displaced in the province 

and the most affected are in 

the eThekwini region. 

“In the meantime all the 

affected people will be put in 

temporary structures or 

community halls where they 

will receive blankets and 

food. We also want to urge 

our people to stop building 

next to rivers and we are 

working with the eThekwini 

Municipality in identifying a 

flat land where we can build 

houses for the displaced

“We also received a lot of 

information on how we 

contribute to climate change 

and how we could control 

this,” he said.

campaigns and programmes 

which contributed to nature 

conservation. 

“We as a country are proud 

to host COP17. We will chart 

the way forward to fight 

climate change. Being

we are serious on preaching 

awareness.” 

Lucky Xaba, a forester for 

Food and Trees for Africa 

said it was vital that children 

were taught to plant their 

food. “We will also do visits 

here to check whether the 

community is talking care of 

their gardens and trees. “

agenda during Global 

Entrepreneurship Week 

which took place in mid- 

November. 

Global Entrepreneurship 

Week (GEW) is the world’s 

largest celebration of the 

innovators and job creators, 

who launch startups that 

bring ideas to life, drive 

economic growth and 

expand human welfare. 

During that one week in 

November, 118 countries 

conduct a broad range of 

activities, events and 

competitions that are 

designed to promote some 

level or form of entrepreneurial 

activity. The activities 

connect participants to 

potential collaborators, 

mentors and even investors. 

In Durban, there were two 

events that highlighted the 

issue of job creation and 

small business development. 

The Municipality’s Business 

Support, Markets and 

Tourism Unit (BSMTU) 

conducted presentations and 

seminars at these events. 

At the City Hall, Khosi 

Sithole from BSMTU said, 

“We conducted this workshop 

so that small business 

people can learn from big 

business and take away all 

the information they need to 

improve or startup their 

business. It also concentrated 

Settlements Department will 

do everything to assist the 

affected citizens. “We urge 

the eThekwini community to 

bear with us and to report 

such incidents to their 

councillors or come to the 

councillors offices at the City 

Hall for help,” he said.

Thomas Mambande from 

Emergent Africa, a business 

development agency and 

one of the organisers of the 

event at Tropicana Hotel, 

said that job creation is big 

on the country’s agenda and 

these events help it along. 

“These delegates have 

businesses or are thinking of 

establishing them. Job 

creation comes in when they 

are looking to employ 

people.” 

“Sustainability is a major 

issue as well. These seminars 

equip people with the tools 

to sustain a business, which 

is bedrock to job creation.” 

Theo Mthimkulu, who 

wants to start her own 

business said. “I feel 

empowered and I want to 

start my own business. These 

events give me the tools to 

do that. I have met and 

mingled with people that can 

assist me. I want to positively 

contribute to the City’s job 

creation so that the economy 

can be strengthened. I feel 

that I will be capable of 

employing staff using the 

guidelines given to me.

eThekwini will be hosting 

the 2011 SALGA KZN Games 

from December 9 -13, 2011. 

The games formerly known 

as KwaNaloga games will 

commence with an opening 

ceremony on Friday, 

December 9, 2011 at Sugar 

Ray Xulu stadium in 

Clermont. 

A line up of top Durban 

artists has been put together 

to entertain and welcome 

the guests during the 

opening ceremony. All 61 

local municipalities and 11 

local district municipalities 

will be present.

breakfast meeting recently to 

announce their strategic 

programmes to develop the 

KZN fashion industry and 

make it more competitive in 

the global arena. 

They also announced their 

intention to sponsor a few 

KZN designers to participate 

in the illustrious SA Fashion 

Week through a partnership 

agreement with Trade and 

Investment KZN (TIKZN). 

Also in the pipeline is 

participation in international 

trade shows and the 

reintroduction of a Fashion 

Week for Durban. 

Some of the programmes 

that will be made available to 

the fashion design industry 

through an application 

process include: 

• Market intelligence and 

events and this one will be 

no exception and the City is 

ready to host the SALGA 

games this year,” said the 

Deputy Head of Sport and 

Recreation Development, 

Vusi Mazibuko. 

“The venues are ready and 

even the municipalities who 

will be taking part were 

happy with the effort we 

have put in as eThekwini in 

getting sports venues ready 

for the games. The standard 

of the launch itself 

demonstrated clearly our 

ability of hosting an event of 

this magnitude,” said 

Mazibuko. 

“We urge people to come 

out in their numbers for the 

opening ceremony and for 

the games. We had made 

sure that we bring the games 

close to the people. Most of

position Durban and KZN as 

a Fashion Destination and 

re-establish a fashion week 

in the City.” 

The KZNFC has a strategic 

partnership with the 

eThekwini Municipality’s 

Economic Development and 

Investment Facilitation Unit 

and the KZN Department of 

Economic Development and 

Tourism. It was established 

in response to the need to 

support the fashion design 

sector.

Development Unit, said that 

the Unit is actively 

promoting and supporting 

industry to grow skills and 

competitiveness through 

EThekwini staged a beautiful 

launch and we want to 

congratulate them for being 

innovative. We are satisfied 

with the level of identified 

venues and all the 

contingency and security 

plans put together by our

was started in Buffelsdraai in 

Verulam has yielded positive 

results. The group that 

initiated the programme has 

now got the support of the 

business linkages and by 

providing a platform for 

networking. “We are calling 

on the fashion industry to 

take this opportunity to grow 

and develop their businesses 

and skills base. By doing this

COP 17 Road 

closures 

AS the climate change 

conference got underway on 

Monday, City officials have 

urged motorists who travel 

through the city centre to be 

patient during COP 17 and 

to find alternate routes as 

the areas around the ICC 

precinct have been closed to 

traffic for the duration of the 

negotiations. 

Roads that will be closed for 

the entire period include 

Walnut Road, Bram Fischer 

(Ordnance) Road to Dr AB 

Xuma (Commercial) Road 

and one lane on Bram 

Fischer, Stalwart Simelane 

(Stanger) Street and Dr AB 

Xuma around the ICC. 

According to Metro Police’s 

Eugene Msomi no other 

roads will be closed for the 

event. He said roads 

between the ICC and the 

Exhibition Centre will only be 

accessed by pedestrians. 

Msomi said there might be 

a need to institute temporaly 

road closures at times; 

however “Metro Police will 

be on hand to manage the 

movement of traffic.”

workshop 

THE Municipality recently 

hosted the Small, Medium 

and Micro Enterprise(SMME) 

empowerment workshops in 

Cato Manor with the prime 

objective of empowering 

SMMEs with critical 

business information for 

their business develop-ment 

and sustainability. 

The workshop was organised 

by Business Support, 

Markets and Durban Tourism 

Unit (BSMDTU). Ngane 

Mkumla, of KwaZulu-Natal 

Department of Economic 

Development and Tourism 

said: “Govern-ment has 

done so much to help grow 

SMMEs. We have formed a 

very good relationship with 

various banks so that you 

have access to important 

information, new systems 

and funds.” 

International 

Junior Science 

Olympiads 

(IJSO) 

OVER 40 countries will be 

taking part in the 8th 

International Junior Science 

Olympiads (IJSO) in which 

Durban is the host city. 

Ronel Mitchell from 

Special Projects Office 

said:“On 1 December 2011, 

eThekwini Municipality will 

welcome some of the 

brightest young minds from 

across the globe to compete 

in the IJSO.” 

She said a total of 278

Mayor calls on Durbanites to keep fit

Mayor Councillor James 

Nxumalo has encouraged 

citizens to keep fit, eat 

healthy and go green. 

This was at a recent Mayoral 

Wellness Day at the Moses Mabhida 

Stadium. 

The event was organised by the 

International and Governmental 

Relations Office, partnered with the 

Wellness and Batho Pele Office and 

targeted at Municipal staff and their 

families. 

Despite the skies opening up 

nothing could discourage the 

participants of the Mayoral Fun 

Run/Walk. Over 200 people 

attended and showed their support 

for living healthy lifestyles and 

going green. The race was 5km and 

Nxumalo placed within the top 

fifteen. 

Also at the event Mayor Nxumalo 

handed over trees to Sharks player, 

Meyer Bosman and Maritzburg 

United player Calvin Sosibo. This 

was done in keeping with the green 

theme and promoting the planting 

of trees. 

Sporting facilities were made 

available to visitors as well. There 

was soccer and volleyball activities 

and Health and Wellness exhibitors 

including Occupational Health and 

Safety, where people could check 

their blood pressure and sugar

As part of the ongoing campaign to 

educate communities and schools 

about the importance of 

sustainable living and keeping the 

environment clean Durban Solid 

Waste (DSW) hosted the School 

Beautification Competition. The 

event was held to award schools 

from the south of Durban that 

made an effort in keeping their 

schools clean. 

The event was held at Ekuphileni 

Primary School in Illovu which was 

also the school that won the overall 

levels. 

Nxumalo said, “It was a great day 

indeed. I enjoyed the support of 

many of the top runners in KZN. I 

would like to encourage people to 

start exercising and keeping fit.” 

He explained why the day was 

organised. “We are setting examples 

and in that way, we must lead by 

example. There are so many 

diseases out there like stress. But I 

must emphasise that everyone is a 

winner and this event will surely 

happen every year.” 

Zamani Mbhele, a familiar face in 

the sport of Athletics, who has 

completed the Comrades Marathon 

and the Two Oceans Marathon, not 

surprisingly, placed first in the male 

runner category. He said, “I am very 

happy with the results. Even though 

this is a short distance I feel great as 

it goes towards my preparation for 

the 42km race I will be participating 

in later this month. I am looking 

forward to another one of these 

wellness days next year.” 

Winner of the Women’s Runner 

Category, Bongi Linda said, “I feel 

great that I have come first, it shows 

that I have the ability to do so and I 

look forward to next year.” 

First Place Walker, Councillor 

Sipho Kaunda said, “Everyone must 

keep fit. Whether it is a walk on the 

beachfront or doing exercise at 

home, we must all do our bit to live 

a healthy lifestyle.”

Environmental make-over for schools 

competition which had 17 schools 

participating. 

“We need events such as these to 

educate our children and make 

them ambassadors of a clean and 

safe environment. Our land refill 

sites are getting bigger and bigger. 

We also spend millions keeping the 

environment clean. If we could 

start to recycle and teach our kids 

to be environmental ambassadors, 

a lot would change,” said Augustine 

Makhetha from DSW. 

The aim was to encourage 

schools to commit themselves in 

promoting a litter free environment 

and to enhance the internal and 

external environment of schools. 

In order for the schools to be part 

of the competition they had to have 

a clean-up or recycling campaign. 

Representative from DSW as well as 

the Department of Health visited 

the schools twice a week to inspect 

hygiene as well as the running of 

the projects. Certificates were 

awarded to participating schools 

and to those schools that went the 

extra mile. 

Baba Mhlongo Principal of 

eMbombo Primary School who 

received an award for the most 

improved school said, “I would like 

to thank the Municipality for 

starting the school Beautification 

Projects, we received a lot of 

support. We were also able to teach 

the kids about the environment it 

was a really positive spin.” 

Schools that took part in the 

project were also given gardening 

tools, vouchers, seeds and more 

that could assist them to continue 

with the competition next year and 

to teach the children about the 

environment.

A group of a South Durban 

community development workers 

recently visited the UniZul Maths 

and Science Centre and the 

Zululand Careers Resource Centre. 

The group visit was arranged by 

the South Durban Basin Area Based 

Management Department of 

eThekwini Municipality together 

with Mondi Merebank, and was 

kindly hosted by Mondi CSI in 

Richards Bay. 

The Centre was made possible 

initially by a few key sponsors like 

Mondi and Engen, but is now a self 

sustaining Centre run under the 

auspices of the University of 

Zululand. Annually, over 30 000 

learners visit the Centre. 

Themba Blose from the 

Lamontville Foundation, one of the 

members of the group, said “I am 

extremely excited about this visit, 

and the need for such a Centre in 

the Durban South Basin is urgent.” 

The group also visited the 

Zululand Career Centre, which also 

hosts huge amounts of learners 

each year. 

The centre provides learners with 

information, advice and guidance 

on their personality type and the 

suggested choice of careers that 

would suit them. 

Bianca Burn, a member of the 

SDB ABM said, “I am so excited, 

because I used the method of career 

choice at the centre to confirm that 

the career direction I want to take is 

the right one for me”. 

Organisers of the trip, Eurakha 

Singh, from the SDB ABM and 

Phumzile Ngwenya from Mondi, 

were enthusiastic about the career 

guidence that was organised for the 

children of the South Durban Basin.

Every year millions of people around the world, including South Africa celebrated World AIDS Day on Thursday, December 1, marking 30 years since the first 

reported cases of what became known as AIDS. According to the UNAIDS report, 34 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2010.

oundation to train the trucking 

ector in HIV and AIDS, workplace 

anagement for peer educators 

nd managers, and the launch of 

Thekwini Wellness Trucking

he Local AIDS Council which is

African Aids Conference where 

intense important discussions on 

HIV and AIDS prevention took 

place and the turnout was good. 

Madondo admitted that there is 

still a lot to do and they are 

committed to do whatever it takes 

to make the lives of eThekwini 

citizen’s better. She urged the 

community to work together with 

them by making sure that they 

practise safe sex since there are free 

female and male condoms 

available at the clinics. 

“I appeal to those who are already 

infected to live a healthy lifestyle 

and exercise often and also take the 

medication correctly and to those 

who are not infected they must 

either abstain or practise safe sex to 

stay negative.” 

Important facts you need to know 

about this incurable disease. 

What is HIV/AIDS? HIV (Human 

Immunodeficiency Virus) is the 

virus that causes AIDS (Acquired 

Immune Deficiency Syndrome). 

HIV attacks the immune system by 

destroying the T lymphocyte, or T 

cell (a type of white blood cell that 

fights off germs and diseases). 

When your immune system has 

weakened and the T cells have 

been completely destroyed, HIV 

turns into AIDS. 

How does one get infected with 

HIV: What one needs to know is 

that you cannot get HIV by holding 

someone's hand, sharing a meal or 

being friends with an HIV positive 

person. The only way HIV is passed 

is through direct contact with an

infected person's bodily fluids. That 

could be by having sex with a 

person who has HIV, sharing 

needles or syringes with a person 

who has HIV or being born to a 

mother who has HIV. 

Are there any symptoms? It is 

said that it can take up to a few 

years until they start to show if one 

is infected with HIV. However, 

when one begins to feel sick, the 

symptoms range from diarrhoea 

and weight loss to infections in the 

mouth and fevers that come and 

go. This is due to a weakened 

immune system such that other 

infections and diseases take 

advantage, like skin cancer and 

pneumonia, which causes 

coughing and breathing problems.

for HIV or AIDS, however there are 

special medications that can slow 

down the disease and help people 

live longer lives.

A general complaint voiced out at 

a number of clinics by residents 

was the inability to serve patients 

quickly. Others complained about 

ill-treatment in clinics whilst others 

were very happy with the service 

rendered. Musa Gumede, Deputy 

City Manager responsible for 

Health and Social Services 

promised people who had 

complaints that issues would be 

looked at seriously. 

Duduzile Mlambo, a resident of 

KwaMashu said she was happy 

with the fact that Nxumalo came to 

them and promised to address 

whatever concern they had. “I am 

also happy about the fact that now 

I have a better understanding of 

what the COP 17 is all about. We 

feel very special after the Mayor has 

visited us,” She said. 

A similar feeling was expressed by 

many people in uMlazi who made 

it very clear that having the Mayor 

visiting them mean they are 

important and well taken care of. 

A resident Sihle Zungu said as 

young people they faced a number 

of challenges, saying that he wished 

the Mayor could initiate 

programmes that would create job 

opportunities. During these visits, 

Nxumalo appealed to people to 

take care of themselves during the 

festive season, saying that the 

citizen’s safety is of utmost 

importance. “As we gear towards 

the festive season we want to make 

sure that people are safe,” he said. 

Towards the end of the campaign 

that took few weeks, the team 

made a special visit to Westbrook 

Retirement Village in Tongaat. 

The campaign did not only have a 

positive impact on adults, but also 

on school kids. Teachers took some 

of the pamphlets and gave them to 

learners so that they would know 

more about climate change and 

other pertinent issues.

over 60 senior citizens Christmas 

lunches, according to Speaker Logie 

Naidoo. 

This week the Speaker held 

Christmas parties in Havenside, 

Woodhurst, Moorton, Imbaliyethu 

in Welbedatch and Montford. He 

was thanking all the senior citizens 

for their contribution to the City's 

economy. 

“We've visited over 60 wards in 

the Municipality where the 

Christmas lunches were held. The 

response and the appreciation from 

the senior citizens has been very 

positive. I would also like to thank 

all those that responded to our 

invitation. 

This is one of the ways of 

honouring them," he said. 

Muriel Molefe, 94, from 

Lamontville, one of the oldest 

senior citizens who attended the 

event said she was delighted to be 

honoured by the Municipality.

other interventions will help to 

reduce the burden of the disease in 

the eThekwini area. However, these 

initiatives by government cannot 

work without the support and full 

participation of communities on the 

ground. I wish to urge eThekwini 

residents to take a stand and 

champion the fight towards an HIV 

free generation. Each home, school, 

church, business, places of 

entertainment and anywhere else 

that people meet must preach the 

gospel of ABC (abstain, be faithful 

and condomise). 

This year’s slogan, Getting to Zero, 

means that each one of us should 

endevour to practice safe sex to 

ensure that there are no new 

infections and care for those already 

infected.

Naidoo (70) said during the 

Christmas party he got a chance to 

reunite with old friends. 

“Personally I would like to 

applaud the Municipality for the 

great work they are doing. I hope 

other Municipalities would also 

follow suit.” 

Naidoo applauded all councillors 

for good events preparations. 

The Municipality stages various 

entertainment programmes for the 

elderly every festive season.

noticed that even the working 

robots are manned by the Durban 

Metro Police for the smooth
