A monthly selection of delicious, dependable reds and whiteswhere the palate, not the price tag, packs a punchLake ChaliceMarlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008was $19.90 now$16.90 13576CASE OF 12 ONLY $15.90 A BOTTLEI love the way this is put together. Seven vineyardsacross the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleysprovide fruit of varying characteristics but unrelentingquality to ensure we get a multi-dimensional winethat at the same time is convincingly Marlborough. Sothere is classic gooseberry character, plus tropicalpassionfruit notes and a backbone of mineral steelfor the fruit to lean upon with a cheeky insouciance.A regular winner of awards over the years, here’s yetanother contender. Go the Chalice.Wally’s HutCabernet Shiraz 2007was $13.90 now$9.90 28433The Cookoothama vineyard now provides a landscapeof neat rows of vines, but was once part of a massivestock station. Wally’s Hut was the base camp for thehorsemen who rode the boundary fence scaring awaydingoes and the like. Anyway, any of you who havetasted the excellent Cookoothama wines will knowtheir class and finesse; these elements come throughin the Wally’s Hut wines, even at under a tenner.Clifton RoadHawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2007Ti PointTWO Merlot Cabernet Franc 2007was $20.90 now$16.90 19031I’m delighted to see some Cabernet Franc in this wine. The variety blends exquisitely with Merlot; moreover,it doesn’t get enough exposure, I reckon. CabernetFranc can be such a useful contributor, imparting itsdistinctive violet overtones and peppery spice, whichlift this wine to a rather fetching level of loveliness. The Merlot is the lush, silky river on which the Francboat floats, while top fruit and judicious winemakinghave ensured it’s a long, smooth sumptuous ride frombeginning to end.was $12.50 now$9.90 18008CASE OF 12 ONLY $8.90 A BOTTLEThis deliciously drinkable Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay has what winescribes would call ‘immediacy’. Loosely translated, that means itsmyriad flavours and aromas of peaches, nectarines and tropical tintscome rushing down the path to eagerly greet your awaiting nose andpalate. Vigorous and vibrant, with a buttery, creamy texture and thecharm and substance of vinos three times the price. Drink it duringFriday night’s fish ‘n’ chips and round off the week perfectly.Matua ValleyHawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2008was $18.00 now$15.00 14074CASE OF 12 ONLY $14.50 A BOTTLEDevil’s StaircaseCentral Otago Pinot Gris 2008was $19.90 now$17.00 12344CASE OF 12 ONLY $16.50 A BOTTLEMade by the crew at RockburnIt can only be a wine windfall for consumers when anoutstanding winery like Rockburn has so much topquality fruit, due to the unprecedented size of thevintage at hand, that they bottle some first-class wineunder a second-tier label, keeping the prices lean andthe enthusiasts keen. This is superb Central PinotGris, awash with Nashi pears and tropical and citrusfruit characters, its delicate sweetness balanced byrefreshing fruit acid on the long finish. It’s slightlyoff-dry, making it spot on for lunch and a languidafternoon. For those who find young Marlborough Sauvignon a little bit too biffbang-pow-zap,and so forth, a wine like this can hit the spot perfectly. With lifted green apple and tropical notes beckoning bouquet-wise,the palate is a rounded, zesty but not searingly acidic, tide of varietalflavour. While not ragingly high in alcohol it has good body, with firmacid steering the flavours to the refreshing finish.AkaruaCentral Otago Pinot Rosé 2008was $19.90 now$17.00 10192CASE OF 12 ONLY $16.00 A BOTTLEConsidering how well they do with both their Pinot Noirs, it is notsurprising that Akarua know exactly how to use it as a basis for agreat rosé. Slinky, never sluggish, this is an energetic little wine thatwith its crisp, warm flavours proves to be an instant relaxant on asummer’s day.3
