Opening ThoughTsTo Love Someone,You Must KnowThemTo be a community changer, we mustlearn to know one anotherWe have all met people whom we find irritatingor whom we dislike based on ourfirst impression. We may jump to a negativeconclusion about them without really knowing anythingabout them and their life situation. I am sure others have felt the same way aboutus. Unfortunately, many times we never get past our initial impression. At MGH, we encounter a variety of people seeking healthcare services who aregenerally apprehensive about the results they will get from tests and procedures. They face health issues for themselves, family members and friends, or even lossof life. This means they have high anxiety and are scared and fearful of what thefuture holds. Often we see people at their worst, when they are emotionally andphysically worn down and weary.Based on all of the information we must gather to treat our patients, we get toknow something about their situation in life. This information helps us get pastour initial impression of them and get to know them. Once we know more aboutthem, we can provide them with the caring and compassionate services they needbecause we know them. Our patient focus is the “whole” person, so we must knowpatients well to meet their needs.Such should be our focus in life. To be a community changer, we must learn toknow one another and understand people’s situations to love them as we should. As we learn to know them, we begin to see them as fathers and mothers, sonsand daughters, grandchildren, friends, neighbors. In other words, we see themas God’s children in need of our caring, compassion, understanding and love. Sodon’t jump to a negative conclusion about someone based on your first impression.Get to know them as people just like each and every one of us.Be a community changer!
