AlBatinah Power Company is the owner ofSohar 2 Power Station, while Al SuwadiPower Company owns Barka 3. The twoplants will be operated by Suez-TractebelOperation and Maintenance Oman LLC(STOMO).Sohar 2 was built in the Sohar industrialpark approximately 200 kilometres northwestof the nation's capital, Muscat, whileBarka 3 was erected in the immediatevicinity of Muscat. For each of these plants, Siemenssupplied the main components comprisingtwo SGT5-4000F gas turbines, one SST5-5000 steam turbine, three SGen5-2000Hgenerators, the electrical equipment andthe SPPA-T3000 instrumentation andcontrols system. The SGT5-4000F turbine is characterisedby high performance, low powergenerating costs, long intervals betweenmajor inspections and an easy-to-servicedesign, reports Siemens.A spokesman told MEP: “Optimised flowand cooling add up to the highest gasturbine efficiency levels for the mosteconomical power generation in combined-cycleapplications.”The SGT5-4000F is based on the SGT5-2000E/SGT6-2000E, Siemen’s reliablerunners. These gas turbines are of provenruggedness, as attested by more than 380machines sold and more than 8.8 millioncumulative operating hours. The Siemens Power and ProcessAutomation T3000 (SPPA-T3000) systemhas been designed to perform all powerplant automation tasks: turbine control, boiler control including boiler protection, balance of plant (BOP) and integration ofthird party systems, such as gasificationislands in IGCC applications. The consortium partner GS E&C suppliedthe heat recovery steam generators andwas responsible for other scopes such asthe civil construction work, electricalTwo SGT5 4000F turbines will go toSohar 2 and two to Barka 3.transformers and ancillary systems as wellas equipment installation.Siemens has been active in Oman since1974, playing an important part in manyof Oman's major power plant projectsover the past 40 years."As an EPC partner, our customers canbenefit from our expertise in integratingthe mechanical, electrical and chemicalprocesses of fossil fuel power plants,"Lothar Balling, head of Gas Turbine PowerPlant Solutions at Siemens Energy's FossilPower Generation Division, tells MEP:"At both Sohar 2 and Barka 3, wesucceeded on schedule in achievingreliable technological excellence bywedding quality in project planning andproject execution."MEPInternet linkwww.energy.siemens.com8M AY 2013 • MIDDLE E AST P OWER

DISTRICT COOLINGDubai: saving energy withabsorption chillersThe UAE’s first absorption chiller powered by waste heat is operational in Dubai. DubaiAluminium (DUBAL) is using some of the steam produced by the captive cogeneration andcombined cycle Dubal power station to drive the process and save energy too, reports MEP.This is certainly a chiller with adifference. The UAE’s firstabsorption chiller has the capacityto change everything. For a start it canreduce the Dubai-based corporation’senergy consumption by over half a millionkWh every year.Located on the rooftop of Dubal'sdesalination plant control building, thenew chiller replaces previous electricallydrivenvapour compression air-conditioningchillers used for comfort cooling ofthe building. The new chiller has the capacity toreduce the corporation's energy consumptionby approximately 626,800kWh peryear.Tayeb Al Awadhi, Vice President of Power& Desalination, tells MEP that theabsorption chiller uses high vacuumconditions to lower the boiling point ofwater to 3.7˚C (versus 100˚C at normalatmospheric pressure) while leveragingthe chemical affinity of Lithium Bromide(LiBR) to absorb water. He says: "At this low temperature, highlyconcentrate Lithium Bromide (LiBr)absorbs the water vapour given off in theDUBAL’s power plant.boiling process very effectively.“As the LiBr becomes dilute, itscapacity to absorb water vapourreduces. A heat source isrequired to re-concentrate theLiBr - whether steam, flue gasesor even hot water. In DUBAL,steam generated from wasteenergy was utilised. Heatingcauses the solution to releasethe absorbed water vapour, which is then cooled in aseparate chamber to become aliquid refrigerant (in the form ofchilled water) throughcondensation.”He explains: “The process usesjust 40% of the electricityconsumed by the conventionalelectrically-driven chillers anduses a nominal 0.6 tonnes ofsteam per hour to producesufficient cooling for the samepurpose."Al Awadhi asserts that DUBAL'snew absorption chiller has thecapacity to reduce the DUBAL’senergy consumption byapproximately 626,800 kWh per year.Based on the standard conversion factor, this equates to a reduction in CO2generation by about 350 tonnes per year, also equivalent to an estimated 180 carsoff the road per year."Installing this first absorption chillerwas a pilot project, targeted atdemonstrating the concept's ability tosave energy and protect the wholeenvironment," continues Al Awadhi."The concept can also be used for otherapplications where energy-efficientcooling is required - such as equipmentcooling."DUBAL's absorption chiller was officiallyinaugurated by Abdulla Kalban (Presidentand CEO) during a special ceremony on27th March 2013.Commenting on the project, Kalban says:"This absorption chiller is expected toreduce the auxiliary power consumptionof the DUBAL plant, thus offering broadereconomic and environmental benefits tothe business. It will also add real value byusing readily available steam from ourPower and Desalination Plants withoutcompromising the processes of either."MEPInternet linkwww.dubal.aeAbsorption chiller.10M AY 2013 • MIDDLE E AST P OWER

GEN-SETSMore than a million hours operatingat Munich AirportNine MWM gen-sets have been in operation for more than one million hours in Bavaria's majorair traffic hub - Munich Airport. And since its opening in 1992, the airport has worked in aspirit of partnership with the MWM Service Centre in Munich, reports MEP.Modern companies such asFlughafen München GmbH rely onstate-of-the-art products andtechnologies which conform to the lateststandards in terms of climate andenvironmental protection. From the beginning, the company hasplaced great emphasis on sustainabilityand economic efficiency when it comes toelectric power. This is also reflected in the airport's owncombined heat and power (CHP) plant, which makes a significant contribution tothe avoidance of CO2 emissions and isconsidered worldwide to be one of themost economical and efficient plants inits class. The CHP plant, which came online whenthe airport commenced operations, wasequipped with seven MWM diesel enginesof the TDBG441BV16 series with an outputof 1,580 kWel and around 1,800 kWth.The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions– compared to conventional electricpower – is put at 30,000 tons per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of20,000 passenger cars driving a totaldistance of 10,000 per year. This enables the total CO2 emissions ofthe daily commuter traffic of 30,000people who work at Munich Airport to beoffset. This high efficiency is madepossible by the cogeneration of heat andelectricity:The heat generated by the electricityproduction is not lost, instead it is usedfor heating and cooling. In the course of the airport expansion ofan additional terminal in the year 2002,the energy control center was enlarged bytwo CHP plants. For this project, MWM delivered twogensets with TCG632V16F engines whichwent into operation in mid-2002.The units have an output of 3.7 MWeleach and approx. 4.6 MW thermal. Thismeans in total that the airport hasapprox. 18.5 MW electrical and approx.20.5 MW thermal output available. The seven diesel engines are additionallyintegrated into the airport's emergencypower supply system. Around 52% of theelectricity required by the airport and 72%of the heat is generated by the combinedheat and power plants on site. The airport's own combined heat andpower plant with the seven MWM dieselgensets, delivers an output of 1,580 kWeland approx.1,800 kWth.The MWM Service Center Munich hasmanaged the system at the airport sinceit was commissioned in the year 1992.Given the close regional proximity to theMWM Service Center and a customerspecificservice program, systems havebeen running there fault-free for years, providing the terminals with electricaland thermal energy.Working hand-in-hand with thecustomer, the MWM Service Center inMunich has been able to continuouslystreamline service routines, among otherthings, reducing lead times for majoroverhauls by approx. 60%.In 2000, FMG acquired a replacementengine through the Service Center Munich,in order to reduce down times duringlarge turnarounds from approximatelyeight weeks down to three, thereby alsoimproving the efficiency of the entireplant. The disassembled engine was thenoverhauled on site and made available tobe swapped out with the next engine.Since commissioning of the cogenerationplant, MWM has been a consistent andreliable partner who, thanks to itscompetent employees, will always ensurethat passengers will never be grounded. For Munich Airport, these measuresmean significantly higher availability ofthe gensets. This is yet another reason forthe impressive number of 1,108,000operating hours of all nine gensets. MEPInternet linkwww.mwm.net12M AY 2013 • MIDDLE E AST P OWER
