On May 16th the North East Community Action
Corp. (NECAC) will be hosting a Weatherization Drop-In
Day from 10am – 7pm at the Lincoln County NECAC
Service Center located at 11 Woodcrest Drive Troy.
Purpose: NECAC’s Weatherization Assistance
Program is designed to assist low-income households in
reducing their fuel costs and to contribute to national
energy conservation through increased energy efficiency
and consumer education. Yearly income guidelines are as
follows: Household of 1 - $21,660, 2 - $29,140, 3 - $36,620,
4 - $44,100, 5 - $51,580, 6 - $59,060, 7 - $66,540, 8 - $74,020
add $7,480 for each additional family member over a
household of 8.
Benefit: Weatherization measures provided by this
program will reduce heating/cooling loss and energy
costs by improving the thermal efficiency of dwelling
units occupied by low-income households. Work measures
include, but are not limited to: Insulation, replacing
broken or missing windows, general air sealing of home,
check of all gas appliances and furnace (clean & tune,
repair, replacement).
NECAC Foster Grandparent Program offers two-way benefits
" After all these years, I think the school is starting to realize just how much we do
for the kids and that's probably why they are wanting more for the older grades.
I've been working with some children and have seen such good results. I currently
have a trio of children who need help with their spelling. They are bringing their
spelling skills up and are so happy to be making 100 now instead of 60 or 70 or
less. I've also started reading with a little boy from another 2nd grade room who
was so disappointed with himself and wanting to increase his reading ability. He
stopped me in the hall one day to see if I could read with him.
His teacher readily agreed and we have started reading together on a daily basis.
He is so happy. I see a big part of his problem is lack of focus, which is pretty
common. We agree to read a page each but often when I'm reading he is looking
all around. I've told him he has to read silently when I read, as I do when he
reads. So when he starts looking around, I stop reading. He knows exactly why and
gets back in focus. It's challenging but so rewarding.” says Naomi Watson.
Though generations apart, the students and adults in the North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) Foster Grandparent
Program all come out better for the experience. NECAC, a not-for-profit agency, is recruiting participants for the program in Lincoln,
St. Charles and Warren counties. NECAC places seniors ages 55 and older at schools, daycare centers and nurseries in the three
counties. They assist children who are having learning problems or need extra attention. “It helps to enrich the seniors‟ lives,” said
Rhonda Orlando, NECAC Foster Grandparent Program Coordinator. “It also enhances the skills of the children.” Sana “Grandma
Sandy” Hunter has been a foster grandparent for 10 years, and loves sitting down with kids at Lincoln Elementary in Troy to read
books or help with classroom activities. “It‟s a great enjoyment knowing I‟m helping little ones who need help,” Hunter said. “Some
of them can‟t read. It‟s just an enjoyment knowing that I‟m able to make a difference.” Orlando has also seen the positive changes
that result from the program. “I do an evaluation at the beginning of school and at the end,” Orlando said. “Reading abilities come
up. The children get more involved and show more interest. They really enjoy the one-on-one they get with the grandparents.” The
NECAC program has 45 participants ranging in age from 55 to 87. Orlando believes working with children is like therapy for
many. “It gets them off the couch,” she said. “They feel needed.” Hunter often is recognized by students at the grocery or in a store.
“They come up and say „Hi, Grandma Sandy,‟” Hunter said. “They call me „Grandma Sandy.‟ Even after they get up in third and
fourth grade, they still come to me.” Funding for the program comes from the Senior Corps of the Corporation for National &
Community Service. Foster grandparents may serve up to 40 hours per week, and some income-qualifying participants may qualify
to earn a tax-free, hourly stipend. Applicants must pass a background check. NECAC provides training, travel reimbursements,
offers insurance and provides an opportunity to attend social events.
More information about the program is available by calling Orlando at (636) 272-3477.
GAS PRICES !!!!!!!!!
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all
service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets
warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum
business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an
important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the
pumps.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3)
stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are
pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank
becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your
money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your
tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal
floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service
stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely
the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the
bottom.
Family Self-Sufficiency Program
*Are you getting help with housing under the Section 8 Program at NECAC?
*Give yourself a hand up and enroll in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS). Get free from welfare assistance. Get your bills
under control. Go back to school. Improve your credit. Buy a home. Help yourself do all or any of these things.
*In this voluntary program you earn an escrow (savings) account! Graduates of the program have been able to save as much as
$20,000.
*Earn escrow when you start working or your current working income increases. When your rent increases due to earned income, the
difference in your new rent paid minus the previous rent paid is set aside for you. Your escrow account earns interest. You receive all
of this money tax free upon successful completion of your goals!
TREATING BURNS
EGG WHITE
One hopes never to be needing it, but just in case:…
A simple but effective way to treat burns with the help of egg white. This method is used in the training of firemen.
When sustaining a burn, regardless the degree, the first aid rule is always placing the injured part under running cold water till the
heat subsides.
And next spread the egg white over the injury.
Someone burned a large part of her hand with boiling water. Despite the pain she held her hand under running water, then took two
eggs, parted the yolk from the egg white and slightly beat the egg white and put her hand in it. Her hand was so badly burned that the
egg white dried and formed a white film. Later she heard that the egg is a natural collagen.
And during the next hour, she administered a white layer (layer upon layer) on her hand. That afternoon she didn't feel any more
pain and the next day there was hardly a red mark to see. She thought she would have an awful scar but to her astonishment after ten
days there was no sign of the burn, the skin had it's normal color again!
The burned area had been totally regenerated thanks to the collagen, in reality a placenta full of vitamins.
